SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

There's much talk about the controversy hurting the KS but it pains me to see how poorly it's been managed so far.

It needs more frequent and interesting updates, clearer stretch goals and most importantly, higher-tier rewards are just begging to be taken.

How many people would up their pledge for a physical PS4 copy, even if it cost more than a regular retail game ?

The people in charge of this kickstarter failed to take advantage of the incredible momentum Sony provided with the E3 reveal. That's why it's slowed down so much IMO.

Yeah, this KS is pretty fucking sloppy so far tbh.

Considering Bloodstained just wrapped up, generally speaking, I'd not be at all surprised if they were too busy/drained to immediately jump into yet another bid at a huge KS project---especially considering they'd surely been tapped by Iga and such well in advance of Bloodstained launching on KS.

I'm thinking this is going to be the week where things come alive and the updates get more proactive in a real bid for greater efficacy...surely...

It's like they were hoping they would reach 10M by fan response inertia. The controversy would have been prevented if they updated their KS regularly, and not do stealth updates to their FAQ. EDIT: It's just so damn frustrating.

I guess they are not updating when they hit their stretch goals..... Not even for some encouragement to continue energizing the campaign.

It:'s Tuesday noon here in Japan. Yu Suzuki and his media team need to start taking action on their Kickstarter page unless they got something great to announce that will hopefully create more buzz and excitement for funding.

Guys, this may be a longshot, but let's start tweeting at Adam Boyes and Gio Corsi. Let them know that the Kickstarter page isn't being run the way it needs to, perhaps they can pass the message along to Yu and his team, and maybe even provide some help.

Gio Corsi is:

@giocorsi

Adam Boyes is:

@amboyes

use the hashtag #10MillionForShenmue3 and simply tell them the Kickstarter page needs a boost in some way, either physical PS4, new backer tiers, new campaign stretch goals, SOMETHING!

Upping my pledge to $250. When this inevitably fizzles out at 6m thanks to "journalists" spreading FUD and horrible mismanagement by whoever is running the Kickstarter at least it won't be my fault.

That's all what need to happen. The kickstarter is doing well but in respect to the goal that it really need to reach, we need to inform the team what exactly they really need to do to make a difference because what they are doing now is quite basic. One month goes really quickly and now a week is gone. It is Tuesday noon here in Japan. They need to work and make a difference on everything now. Things can't wait.

really, posting here doesnt really help, its good for discussion, but comments about higher tiers and better management and frequent updates should also be posted on the KS page

i for one, am waiting to get my paycheck so i can finally make a pledge, going for the 29 digital, or even 60 for phisical copy, but it would be nice if a ps4 phisical disc was available or even paypal for those who prefer that

I've been following the comments, it's being voiced pretty loudly there. I really hope they are reading them.

Maybe my comments are just way too early. Maybe they will do a very big update to everything and add more tiers in some days. After all we still have 25 days. Maybe I'm just being hopeful and they won't do anything.

Dammit the wait is freaking killing me.

Every day they don't do something is lost money. They can't afford to wait.

It's too easy to be fatalist at this point. It's really important that fans stay positive (delusionally positive if possible), because it's easy to get negative and lash out, and that only hurts in a fundraising campaign when you're trying to appeal to as many people as possible.

That said,
1) I do think the kickstarter hasn't been run all that great. They need a PayPal option asap, they need to sort out the ps4 thing asap, they need to be more active in posting fan works. The kickstarter page is supposed to be the center of the campaign, and it flat out isn't.

1a) nostalgia aside, the pitch video is kinda lame and that probably doesn't help. But it's probably too late to fix that.

2) while the kickstarter has been run suboptimally, I don't think that explains why it's underperforming. I think the FUD from the gaming media is still the obvious culprit -- kick starters are inherently a risky and somewhat unappealing gamble. People don't like preordering, especially not on a product that won't exist for 2 years. Give them an easy excuse why they shouldn't -- an excuse like, "it's already funded", or "Sony will fund it themselves" -- and they may well not contribute.

GAF is aware of the reality, after our innumerable threads about this saga. But other gamers, the ones who don't spend long hours debating games on the internet -- aka, most of them -- probably have only been exposed to this campaign via E3 and the FUD that came to rain on the parade.

I'm not sure how to fix it. The fanbase is already energized, that part's a given. The kickstarter runners need to get with the program and stop fucking stealth-updating the FAQ. This isn't some run of the mill game, this is shenmue. We've still got weeks to make it work, but I'm not sure how you get the word out.

...any professional marketers around here? :)

Did my part.

Frankly I'm not all that bothered by all the FUD anymore, but moreso that this KS definitely needs better management.

Same. Because all the FUD can be fixed with the better management.

I tweeted Gio Corse and Adam Boyes about the KS management, but I doubt they can do anything about that.

I would most certainly bump my pledge up to even $100 for a special physical PS4 copy.

I think that's the single biggest fuck up so far. Should have been at least $60 minimum for your choice of digital/physical on PS4. That $29 digital only is doing more harm than good considering that's what most people are going for imo. This could have easily been close to 5 million already with 10 million a strong possibility. And the worst part is that it's probably to late to change it.

IMO:

$29 - digital copy (PC/PS4)
$60 - physical copy (PC/PS4)
$100 - collectors edition physical copy (PC/PS4) maybe an exclusive case or something

You would make a few hundred k INSTANTLY

Yep.

Even if they end up adding higher-tier rewards, at some point a lot of people just won't bother reading the updates in their mailbox anymore and will miss the opportunity to up their pledge.

Man, if this was run by someone who had even the most basic knowledge of the history of successful KS campaigns, we'd already be at $5 Million right now.

They need a new video to hype it up and show off the combat and some of the other gameplay mechanics even if it's scripted and proof of concept. As much as we all (I hope) enjoyed Shenmue 2 disc 4 that sort of tone with stilted English placeholder voice acting isn't the best way to sell this.

Thanks. I tweeted them too, it's probably out of their control but who knows. Anything is worth a shot.

Yup.

Even if we can't achieve 10 million, this still needs to be as high as it can feasibly achieve.

Because ideally, a strong showing is a leverage against SEGA to consider porting Shenmue 1/2, and if that can become a reality, a 2nd round of funding is also feasible using those ports as an incentive.

"The Day The Snow Turned Into A Game"

R9dPCjn.jpg

Dear Members,

As many of you know, last week was a week that will go down in history for our community. After 14 years of waiting and hoping, it was revealed by Yu Suzuki himself that he is finally in a position to move forward with the creation of Shenmue 3, albeit with a bit of a caveat. Through the announcement of a Kickstarter campaign, Suzuki-San as asked us the fans to help bring his dream, as well as ours, to life by backing and supporting a campaign to help fund the development of the project. While there are various entities supporting this project, Suzuki-san himself has stated that that the fate of Shenmue 3 now rests in our hands and that our actions as a community will dictate the capabilities his team will have in creating the game and to ideally meet its full creative potential.

If you have not already done so, please visit the campaign website and take some time to consider the extent to which you would be willing and able to support this project; note that there are a range of pledge levels with corresponding reward tiers for every single level of backing. As the campaign progresses, there will also be added levels of support to coincide with stretch funding goals as they are introduced. All of the funds that are pledged will be allocated to and utilized SOLELY by YSNET to develop the game.

Contrary to a lot of the dubiously sourced misinformation that has been circulating in recent days, Sony will NOT be funding the entire budget for the game nor will they subsidizing the development costs for YSNET. While Sony will provide various technical investments in conjunction with marketing and promotional support, this project will remain firmly in the directorial hands of Yu Suzuki and his staff. While it is true that there are a number of backers for Shenmue 3, we at this time do not know the scope of how these other entities are involved with the project. All that we can establish for now is that we as a community are in fact the primary patrons for the development of the game and that the responsibility of making Shenmue 3 the strongest game it can be ultimately resides with us.

Over the next few weeks leading up to the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign, we will be introducing two specific social-media based initiatives to promote the backing of the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter and the series as a whole. The first initiative, #30onthe3rd, is a continuation of our monthly tweetathon #SaveShenmue but with a twist. On 7/3/2015, we encourage everyone to who is able to increase their pledge amount by $30 and post a corresponding tweet as a sign of solidarity within the community. The 2nd initiative, #10MillionToShenmue3, is a hashtag campaign to be disseminated across all social media platforms to highlight the need for additional funding for Shenmue 3 in order have it be the project that Yu Suzuki has dreamed of creating. In a recent interview, Suzuki-san stated that at a $10 million funding level Shenmue 3 would feature a truly open world that would follow in the lineage of the previous installments.

The time has finally come for us in the Shenmue community to support the series that has given us so much over years. We are now in a position where we can directly impact and influence the creation of Shenmue 3 and give Suzuki-san our direct input. While the task at hand may seem daunting, if we come together and collaborate our efforts we will attain the game that we have wanted and deserved for so long. Thank you all very much for your support and we would not be in the position we are in now if it was not for your perseverance and dedication for the series against all odds. We have truly made it.

Keep friends,

The Shenmue Dojo Staff

For all the complaints about misinformation out there and people spreading seeds of doubt, I'm going to go ahead and open myself up to a potential storm of hate and say this: I think the GIF in the OP (while it looks great) is misleading for a couple of reasons:

1) It looks official enough that it could be mistaken for something from the project's creators.
"Sony is not funding this project, we need your help"

2) It falsely creates the impression that despite the $2M Kickstarter goal, that the project actually needs five times that level of funding to make the project a reality.
"We need $10 million"

Combine those two points and to an outsider I think it makes the project look sketchier. "Why did they ask for $2M when they really needed $10M? Why did Sony say they're supporting the game and now the developers say they're not?"

I wanted to offer that feedback because I have the same gut reaction every time I accidentally open the first page of this thread on my phone.

Personally, very eager to see the game happen. I've said it elsewhere, but I honestly would have been happy with a barely interactive novel at this stage... great that the vision is clearly more than that ;)

SickBoy,

those are good points and something I can sort of get behind.

On another note, I haven't seen you post in ages and your avatar was a blast from the past. A glance at your profile says 1.55 posts per day, so I am sure I just miss the threads where you do occasionally post, but it is good to see all the same. Am I dreaming, or at one point a decade or so ago was your name changed to SickBoyTurboAlphaII? Or something like that...

Ha, yes. I think I did have a Capcom-ized version of my name at one point.

These days I mostly lurk and talk about gaming deals in Canada... I find that in most cases I'm behind on the gaming conversation, so unless it's something I feel that needs to be said I keep my trap shut.

But of course, who can't get behind a little Shenmue? :)

Yeah, I haven't checked up on this in a while, and that banner made my heart drop.

I thought some crazy shit happened, Sony backed out, and now Shenmue wouldn't be made unless they got 10 mil...

So, here's some optimism to help me sleep tonight:

As long as we hit $5m, everything will be pretty good. Reasoning:

1. other funding sources. Yu's got some of this sorted out, between the sony deal and whatever other backing he's able to dredge up. Maybe he can even guilt sony into an extra million...

2. paypal after the kickstarter ends. obviously this is contingent on them actually allowing paypal donations... but with such a loyal fanbase, this would be a very effective way of bridging the gap. We can slow burn this bad boy up, and while it's a fact that all the funding isn't there to begin with makes planning more complicated... it's also a fact that the crunch at the end is the biggest budget burn anyway.

Isn't this the channel that started that ridiculous Silent Hills rumour?

The way that game media has been reporting and spreading false information is fucking embarassing, and really hurting this project.

Yes, a rumor that they took the risk to believe their (till that point reliable) source with. Also keep in mind that Dark Souls III was broke to them before any place else, so they're not all bullshit.

The entire funding with the kickstarter and how the funding of the game is actually going down IS messed up and confusing so yes I think it's a good thing to discuss and nothing in the actual video itself is "bad."

The problem alone is the clickbait title which also pissed me off when I saw it... but Inside Gaming/Funhaus/The Know always uses clickbait titles because it gets them results and they're running a business that depends on hits so they're not going to stop. Maybe people should just stop falling for clickbait, therefore people would stop using the tactic.

There really is nothing sketchy about it. What I find weird is how Sony explicitly states from moment 1 that this is not their project and are only assisting, but people still say that because it is on their stage it is in fact their project. Do people assume Assassin's Creed is Sony's project too? Why not. It got stage time!

The campaign communication has certainly be lacking but certainly most of the confusion stems from people reading into things that are certifiably not true. Fan 'clarifications' have only made the situation worse. Especially when 'gameragate' types caught the opportunity to use the mess as 'look how terrible the game press is' propaganda. If only YS-Net weren't twiddling their thumbs right now…

Dark Souls 3 was theirs sure, but if you report every rumour that comes along you're bound to be right now and then. It's an issue of integrity and vetting rumours before reporting on them. Of course a place like GAF can be expected to talk and speculate on anything but gaming sites and channels that advertise themselves as reporting "news" have an obligation to not give the time of day to blatantly false situations like the Silent Hills one. I mean the whole "80% done" and "worth billions" discredited that from the start but hey they ran it anyway.

And now the helping to spread more misinformation and confusion towards a project like Shenmue that needs all the help I can get.

Sorry for the rant it's just frustrating

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl4NzY9umlU

needs a concise, intelligent top comment to debunk this kind of slander, this videos got like 16000 views.. buncha shit. Was hoping we can keep this thing around that 90k a day.
Most of the comments are quite negative towards the video and there are a lot of downvotes. I would encourage everyone who has a Youtube account to downvote the video and upvote the critical comments.

People may come for clickbait and end up actually being convinced by the arguments in opposition.

Awesome, thanks for sharing !
That's definitely the kind of stuff they could use to make the KS page lively and attractive :D
It's kinda depressing… They can't even understand why having the stretchgoals at the bottom of the page is a bad idea. Took me several minutes to scroll to it.
