SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Do we know why it was never released on PS2?

Game would have probably done well on that platform.

Sega had very close ties to Microsoft back in those days with Microsoft helping out with the Dreamcast before getting into the console game themselves. This probably carried over to the Xbox era as well as Microsoft chucking money at everything when Xbox first hit the scene.

So what rewards would people like to see?

Maybe a limited edition Winning Can?!! I can't see that being cheap to ship across the world without being damaged though!

You gotta think that a remaster of 1+2 would be a better way to gauge interest than a kickstarter...

What? What do you mean gauge interest? Interest for who? The devs of Shenmue 3 don't even have access to Shenmue 1 and 2 as they're owned by SEGA. The interest for a third game was obviously there as the game got funded in less than 12 hours.

Makes you wonder how high we would be right now if it wasn't for the sniveling asshats who have tried to black ball and sabotage this from the start.

I have no idea how even just a Story based Shenmue 3 would get created with 2 million dollars

Just saw this on Shenmue Dojo. Apparently the retro gaming section of 4chan has a Shenmue 3 banner, hahaha.

to be fair sega had already announced the dreamcast was dead prior to shenmue II's release. that's got to be a harsh blow to sales.

True (though it didn't seem to hurt Sakura Taisen or Phantasy Star Online, released the same year and sold more), but we're talking Xbox versus Dreamcast release now, not another fantasy scenario where the DC was selling gangbusters in 2001/2002.

The same would have been even more by the time a localised version would have reached the US. Especially if they'd have spent time on a full voiced localisation rather than the subbed version we got in EU (which, while I greatly preferred, probably limited the mainstream potential further).

I think you are being too pessimistic. In the first place, it's $2m + $X but that kind of budget would afford them a small team and a couple of years tops which would be enough to deliver a game. Now they are also expecting money to roll in after the KS so the $2m is well a Kickstarter to get the ball going, but the KS amount determines the size of the ball. In the first place even huge AAA projects don't start with huge resources, they get the amounts that Shenmue III is getting and then ballooning appropriately.

Looking forward to the new rewards! I'm hoping there are some "smaller" ones available between $500 and $3,000, as well as a few high-dollar ones.

For those playing through the games, where are you at? I've been doing a nice, slow playthrough, and just reached the part where you are attempting to get a ticket to Hong Kong. This is probably only my second playthrough ever where I have reached Christmas before this point. I am going to beat Chai this time, even if I have to reload a hundred times lol!

EDIT: Ah, just saw the backer update! I'm loving the possible rewards. I never even thought of a physical Lucky Hit game, but I would be all over that!

No mention of Sega-branded arcade games. Guess that answers that. But honestly, I'm ok with that. I always preferred the "in-world" minigames.

Possible new rewards from the survey:

- Lucky Hit physical board game
- Dragon and Phoenix Mirror replicas
- Ryo's journal (physical)
- Become an NPC
- Have your voice in the game
- Ryo's watch replica
- Stickers or patches

Voted for Ryo. I just couldn't bring myself to vote for any other character.

The physical journal would be a cool addition as well as a real Lucky Hit board.

Edit: Really like the journal and the mirrors. The mirror I'd probably keep in my lounge on display.

New update.

Ya'll better be voting for my boy, Ren, or there will be hell to pay.
I'm sorry
I am not sorry

How could there ever be anyone else.
I was originally planning to use her as the basis of my avatar but I couldn't find the right render to use.

Finally a good update to involve the community. And now do updates like that daily!

EDIT: You better all vote for my homeboy Tom

Right? There's sooo much they could be doing to play off Shenmue content with the community. They could put out a poll a day and they'd still have loads they didn't cover when it ended.

Speaking of Tom, if I were better at Photoshop I'd alter this image to have him holding up three fingers on each hand:

had to vote for darts as my favourite game. i've just wasted too much time playing that over the years not to. especially in shenmue 2 when you had darts rivals. that was a great sidequest.

Those new rewards aren't very exciting to me. I'd be more likely to up my pledge if they offered a Dreamcast-like packaging for the PC game.

I already have an easy way to implement Tom. Ryo could walk into a store and there is a cuscene triggered with a TV commercial for Tom's new Mixtape. Tom Johnson - Grooving Pleasures Vol. III - The No. 1 Billboard album from the US. Now available in China (for a brief second I still thought Ryo is in Japan, comes from playing Part 1 right now^^)

You all know you want it. So go and vote!

I voted for Nozomi.
Was gonna vote Ren
but he is coming back already
.
Was gonna vote Tom - but aside from humour he is useless.
Nozomi, because I want to see her return!

And, hnnngggg if I can be an NPC with my voice in the game....
Make it happen!

The Kickstarter project is managed by nitwits.

Lets read a bit between the lines and allow for some more creative assumptions.

The latest update showed three things, it is driven by people who like to massage the public perception, but are useless at it - so "whats your favorite character" is probably the lousiest bait I have ever seen to draw a majority to answer the really important survey questions (The survey is open to the public btw - it is not backers only.). The illustration principle of "lets throw 640x480 character portraits at our backers (scroll, scroll, scroll, bad pictures, no context)" underlines once again, that there are incredible amateurs at work, who havent created even one successful internet anything in the past. Not even a website. And then there is the jump...

Which reward would you like to have for - 80 USD, and for 750 USD? No step in between. So this Kickstarter management sees its future in increasing the 800 USD backer tier? Seriously? Have you ever talked to anyone who has managed a Kickstarter before? Do you want to scare all word of mouth entries that are supposed to fill this campaign for the coming 20 days - before you start encouraging people to up their pledges? Do i see myself sinking 800 USD into this project at any stage? Do more than 1% of the pledgers? Maybe for "truly open world"? [sic!]

Back to the design aspect.

- All banners suck. All headline elements suck. The amount of "whitespace (pergament colored in this case)" screams amateur. To be exact it screams geocities, and "im old and dont understand design on the internet" also.

- Ryos face is Scarface in the US and chiby superdeformed cutiepie in the famitsu article? We saw that one before - again, marketing targeting for two different markets - in the end it will look different - but more to the point, I have a difficult time to find anyone who liked it in the first place - this screams "targeted". Not sure if it actually was. It didnt work.

- The project text sucks - no context, no orientation for first time backers, 0 sum answers, a wrong structure, backing goals that are nonsensical - and even less explained - because, who cares, they arent real in their specificity anyhow. No explanation what the world of Shenmue entails. At all. At all.

- When a backing target is reached, it only takes the project management 4 hours to react to it - and the reaction isnt crafted, they have no idea - what to do when they reach a goal. Normally you talk about it and show what people have just allowed to happen to give warm fuzzies and motivation to reach the next goal - nothing.

I dont care about 3000 USD plastic leather jackets either, who does? If you dont have to look at the value side of your pledge, I'm pretty sure you also dont care about pleather either...

The reddit link that famously was a botched two - because someone lost a password or something? Or registered a bit.ly link wrong? And then a bit.ly link for statistics in the first place... come on...

What can be done at this point?

Idk. fire your Kickstarter management and start over? Oh, not possible... I forgot. The mishap that lead to the rumor going around, that this was just Sony pre order soliciting service 2.0 very much killed momentum, and all that should have seen it coming - seem to be oblivious to it right now.

The videos that are supposed to trickle out over the next days are interesting, but dont have any quality that would be able to bind excitement. If anyone needs a picturebook example of how you fail my auto succeeding on Kickstarter - this is it.

Back it anyhow, and tell a friend - because the previous games have earned it and - nostalgia.

Now that we've tentatively hit 3.6m do you guys think we'll trickle to 4m before the (hopefully) manic last few days when it ramps up again?
