never thought I'd be defending Americans, but yeah, I can see someone's gonna be a bit tired of English actors playing American icons. I mean, I'd be pissed too if some US guy played Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, or Sweeney Todd, or Jane Austen, or Lara Croft, or Bert from Mary Poppins

super stoked..YEAH we got another one!

Really stupid thing to get mad over imo.

It's not like he's swinging around NY saying "ello govna" or some shit. Maybe young American actors should step their game up?

Hope we get to see these three on the big screen together.

If his contract allows for a cameo in Netflix's Daredevil and that actually happens, I will be overflowing with glee.

At the very least I expect a name drop in Season 2. It would seem that the precedent set by SHIELD means we don't get any big-screen superheroes on TV, but Daredevil is kind of a notch above SHIELD in every respect, so I wonder if the rules are different. I mean, SHIELD did manage to get some Sam Jackson appearances at least, so Peter Parker isn't completely off the table.

Not sure if this was posted, but here's how he got the part:

After seeing more than 1,500 actors, Marvel and Sony, using lead casting director Sarah Finn (who has worked on several Marvel movies) narrowed the list to six for a fateful screen test on May 30 in Atlanta, where Civil War is currently shooting. Those actors — Holland, Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe — are all between the ages of 14 and 19, in keeping with producers' goal of casting a Peter Parker who actually looks like he is in high school. (Previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, were both in their mid-to-late 20s when they landed the role.)

Robert Downey Jr., whose Iron Man character appears in Civil War and is said to share scenes with Peter Parker/Spider-Man, participated with the actors in the tests, which included former-Sony-chief-turned-producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. They were looking for chemistry between the boy and the elder Avenger.

After the initial round of tests, producers narrowed the contenders to just two, Holland and Rowe, though Holland was the frontrunner. Unable to decide between them, they asked for a second screen test that occurred the week of June 8. Sources say that Holland was the only actor who tested separately with Downey and Chris Evans, who portrays Captain America.

More at the link. Pretty cool that they actually had him go up against Tony/Cap to see what the chemistry was like

So, he screen tested with Downey Jr and Evans. Based on that, I don't think Spider-Man will be a cameo. He will not be the main protagonist, but he will have a role bigger than a cameo.

High Schoolers honestly all look younger than we're preconditioned to think. I feel like expectations of how old someone should look in high school have been morphed by movies and television shows always casting someone in their mid to late twenties as a high schooler.

As someone from Asia, I grew up thinking that Americans look much older than their age. Then I realised it's just the casting when I started using the internet more and bother with finding out more information on the actors.

Not liking the fact they got a no-name director with hardly any experience. Oh well, I'll give them a shot like I gave Amazing Spider-Man but I have a feeling Spiderman as we knew it won't ever return to the heights of the Raimi versions.

Not sure how to react. 2 nobodies feels strange after what happened with ASM. But i guess they're not worried about BO since it has the Marvel stamp of approval. Don't give a fuck about another Spidey reboot but interested in how he'll play out in the MCU.

No expectations. At this point, I don't really care. If they end up doing something good, I welcome it. If not, well, whatever. Really hard to picture them going lower than ASM2 though.

Sarah Finn was the person who convinced both James Gunn and Chris Pratt to have the latter be Star-Lord in Guardians when neither of the two thought it was a good idea.

I have faith in her casting ability.

And, from what i've read out of his twitter, seems like kind of a douchebag. Maybe that's just his age.

I was confused as to why Brad Shoemaker followed this random 18 year old actor on Twitter until I find out he plays Dota. So, I mean, the Dota fan in me sort of feels sad but Tom Holland seems like a better pick.

Yeah, and Brad actually played with him in one of his videos IIRC.
Look at it like this: Asa can climb that ladder now! (or what there is in dota, i play the other moba, sorry)

oh, indeed. Plus he's gonna use a perfect NYC accent so people won't even know he's English

still salty for Costner-Hood tho. The fuck was that fucking accent

Any word on the length of his contract? I'm guessing more than 6? CW + 2 Avengers + solo trilogy + cameos?

I also hope he can appear in the netflix shows how ever his power set is a bit too much for the Defenders roster...

He's apparently only shooting for a week on Civil War, so it sounds like his role here will be pretty tiny. But the screentests aren't necessarily for just this movie, he's going to have end up interacting a lot with Downey and Evans further down the road if not in CW, so it's still important to test that out now.

The THR report says he's signed to Civil War and a standalone trilogy. Hard to believe he won't also appear in Infinity War though, which if true, would bring him to the same 6-picture deal that most of the other principals have.

You sons'a bitches told me The Impossible was on Netflix, I feel lied to.

Some things are best forgotten.

I just hope someone has the sense to somehow make this kid fight The Hulk in Avengers 3.

I want Spidey charging on Hulk's back. I think the two can have some great on screen interactions.

This will be my only post in here, because I don't want to be a Debbie Downer.

I have lost all interest in Spiderman, and this casting does nothing for me. I wanted an older Spiderman. I am sick of Origin and teens angst Spiderman.

Yeah I really don't see how someone can not be excited at the thought of throwing a teenager into that mix of Avengers. The potential there is enormous

Yeah, especially with Stark. Never mind the action, some of the character moments are going to be amazing between uber sarcastic, aging gen-xer Stark, and this new young rookie millennial super-hero who's also known for his zingers but of a totally different flavor.

And I really hope his contract DOES include appearances in the various parts of the MCU tv ghetto. It would be so cool to see him interact with the Shield gang, who would undoubtedly find him to be an annoying amateur, but then he's strong enough to take down Skye or any of their enemies. And of course, he belongs right in the middle of the Netflix gang. At least an occasional meeting.

Actually, I just hope they remember to characterize his interaction with the rest of the MCU kind of how he is in the books... everyone kind of thinks he's a pain in the ass. He's kind of close to a few other heroes here and there, but for the most part most of them find him pretty annoying, haha.

I also hope we get MANY years with the same Spider-Man and we get to see him grow up, go to college, meet his new friends, and eventually, a decade down the line maybe, get married, have a daughter and hand off the job to somebody else. You know, Miles down the road I mean.

Given that most of the Avengers are middle-aged already, a younger Spider-Man makes the most sense. Plus you avoid any potential "where was Spidey during the Battle of New York" plot holes if he were older. And I wouldn't worry about the origin story, Kevin Feige already confirmed that they're skipping that part of Spidey's career.
