Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Anyone get Banjo Nuts and Bolts running? I tried buying it on the digital store, but it won't let me and says I need to sign in from my 360 (I sold it a year ago).

I ordered a physical copy and it arrived yesterday. Put it in the Xbox One and I'm not getting the prompt to install it or anything. I'm in the preview program, have the latest updates installed, and I got Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise working with no problem.

They removed Nuts and Bolts....

Damn. Did it ever work?

Hopefully they add it before Rare Replay comes out in August, otherwise I'm going to feel like a complete idiot.

It was on the initial list but it seems it may have been accidental as they pulled it a day or two after BC went live.

I got my message that I got accepted to use preview today and I downloaded the dashboard. But when I put Viva Pinata in the console it can't read the disc. What am I missing?

I think your console needs to go through an approval process. If you open the registration tile in the dashboard it may say pending under action. That's where I am at with the process.

This is on the Xbox 360 dashboard at the moment. I think it's a safe bet these will all be on Xbox One very soon as these are the top BC games being voted right now and I doubt MS would post games that weren't coming. Activision is confirmed by the looks of things.

Too bad we won't be getting anymore games on BC until next month probably. Also those are probably some of the games but I think they will probably bring over like 20 or so games next month since they're trying to push for 100+ games at launch.

Probably how it'll end up working I think.

Test them in batches of 20 per month, before rolling them out.

June ~20 games
July ~20 games
August ~20 games
September ~20 games
October ~20 games

That brings the total to "over 100" games with Public launch in mid-late October.

Then they could just do ~20 games a month following that, with one month testing periods for Preview members.

I hope their BC team is the rate limiting step and not publishers dragging their feet to sign off on their game.

From what was said at E3, most publishers already signed off before they even announced BC so I think this falls with the BC team more than anything.

Been playing Banjo-Kazooie and Mass Effect. Both have been great. As someone who played through ME1 a ton of times on 360, it's really amazing to see how fast textures are popping in. Frame rate hasn't really bothered me, but it would be nice if they gave an option to disable v-sync. It is surprising that the frame rate is better in most cutscenes though.

I love taking screenshots and recording clips on these games.

Ahh looks like you're right. Daaamn I was ready to play

The way it worked for me is that I got the notification that I was accepted and that I had to download the preview app to register my console. So I downloaded and installed and within the preview app it said that I needed to wait until my console had accepted the update.

About 36 hours later I got a message upon logging in to my xbox that it was time to update. A firmware update downloaded and installed, then Hexic and Geometry Wars showed up in my ready to install list.

That's a good point, you could probably get around it by switching the Xbone region. A lot of these aren't available online and the BC is in fact region locked but if I remember earlier in the thread, switching the system to a region the disk is supported works so maybe it lets you get around the 360 region lock too.

They really don't have to do anything. The actual wrapped emu/game package would be region free simply on the basis that it's a signed XB1 program. No XB1 apps or games have region restriction. The OS inside would have to be a 360 compatible to that game but as far the XB1 is concerned it's just running normal region free code.

So Mushihime Futari Sama would come packed with an emulated version of a Japanese 360 but the XB1 would load it as if it was a European or American region game. Same for any US or European titles on a Japanese XB1.

All bearing that 5pb, Cave, Taito and such actually approve the titles of course.

Any profile incompatibilities however would be on Microsoft to address. Potentially allow us to make a region specific profile for use with 360 emulation from other countries aside from our home profile maybe.

Has it ever been confirmed if non-cloud saves can come over? Like, is there a way to put them on the cloud, or transfer them over through a USB thumb drive?

Cloud is seen as another storage device on 360. Copied my Mass Effect saves from Hdd to cloud without a problem

So Red Dead Redemption may be coming soon? Awesome. Activision being on board is a little surprising, they are sitting on a gold mine with CoD I still can't believe they aren't remastering. I hope BO2 comes though.

Seeing as how Shadowrun is first party, it better be Backwards Compatible ASAP. I guess the cross platform play with PC might be an issue, but I hope not.

Plenty of old school players would come back to it more often if it was convenient, and if they made it a cheap download on the store, it could have a very healthy population. It just needs a chance to shine, I'm sure there is a market for it, no DLC, no leveling, upgrades, unlocks. Put it in and play.

Should not be.

Phil Spencer said repeatidly that the xbox 360 is fully emulated and even xbox live thinks you are logged into an actual xbox 360.

Neither Rockstar nor Activision are officially on board yet.

Yeah I was just going off the 360 favourites on the dashboard. While it's not officially confirmed, I doubt MS would put those games there if they didn't at least have some sort of approval.

I don't think putting them on the 360 dash says anything about 360 BC on Xbox One. It just says, "Hey, these games are popular."

And I wouldn't trust Activision to do anything that benefits their customers. This is the company charging full price for a small Destiny expansion, after all.

Doesn't Microsoft have 70,000 employees? They should set aside 500 or so employees, a mix of software engineers, QA testers, and PR people, to do the following:

Software Engineers: Spend all work hours optimizing the 360 BC solution. Get rid of stuff that WORSENS performance, like the forced vsync, so that games like Mass Effect perform exactly like they used to on 360, instead of performing worse than they used to on 360. Come up with a solution to allow 2-disc games. Finalize the solution that will allow DLC. Fix bugs like Super Meat Boy not allowing cloud saves. And maybe pull off the miracle of making games with peripherals work (Rock Band + Kinect games).

QA testers: Some project manager should come up with a streamlined sanity test plan that makes knocking BC games through QA smooth as butter. Their goal should be to have every 360 game in existence run through QA, whether or not that game is approved. Then when the game is approved, at the flick of a switch it can get added.

PR team: A team of PR guys should work the phone 24/7 in shifts calling any and all publishers. Call in as many favours as you can and make sure no essential games are missed. We need Call of Duty, we need GTA, we need Tales of Vesperia, we need NHL 12. From the obscure to the popular, there are 100s of games that could slip through the cracks and this team should make sure none do. And come up with some solution to allow de-listed games added.

I know what I'm asking for is ridiculous lol (in terms of employee focus/productivity). I'm half joking and half serious. I'm just really excited about BC and I want it to truly be comprehensive.

Didn't they say the QA process is automated?

They don't want to invest that much money into this since is makes no profit for them. I'm sure they have a small team working on it but it's never going to be remotely as big as a game developers team.

I wish the :lol emoticon still existed.

According to Glassdoor, the average software engineer at Microsoft makes ~$120,000.

The standard "real cost" you should assign per employee is generally to double the salary, but let's be generous and say that it costs ~$200,000/year to employee a person (including benefits, etc.)

500 * $200,000/year = $100 million / year

Okay. I think I'm ready to get an Xbox One because of this. I have GameStop credit. They're doing a trade-in promo. I haven't used my 360 for games in many months, but there are some games there I'd like to get to some day or revisit. Without BC I'd wait until it was under $200.

Something I hadn't considered until today: the 360 was region-locked, but XB1 is not. I'm wondering if BC will work for alternate region 360 discs. Best case scenario, I could buy and play a lot of Japan-only 360 games (visual novels, etc.) that I always wanted to. Or at the very least, maybe it'll be possible to replay some of our favorite games on the opposite PAL/NTSC version to stack the achievements.

Ugh. Seeing Fallout on the list made me realize that I own all the DLC, but it's on the extra GOTY edition disc so I doubt it's going to show up in my "Ready to Install" list when it gets added. Probably going to have to just bite the bullet and rebuy all of them.

it's the publishers. BC doesn't require any extra coding.

I wonder if Sony could pressure certain pubs into not participating. Kind of under-the-table comments like: "You know, if you guys agree to BC on X1, we may not be so eager with the joint-marketing deal next-time. We are the market leader now..." etc. It's a business, after all.

Seriously doubt it. The region-locking is part of all the legal agreements with the publishers and what-not. They probably have no choice but to continue with that practice for those titles or face potential lawsuits.

Maybe DLC will be included in the Fallout 4 deal?

Have we heard any word on fixing the resolution in Perfect Dark? On 360 it runs at 1080p and on Xbox One it is downscaled to 720.

Also the controls feel off, the sensitivity curve is wrong I think. It moves too quickly too fast. Makes it tough for those of us that play with Auto-Aim off (breaks the game IMO).

Switching back and forth between the 360 version really shows how much accuracy you lose in the BC Xbox One version :(
