Wow, the opening paragraph is pathetic:

You know what? I'm upping my pledge again to counter this shit. Done.

"because I don’t fund other people’s creative endeavors and I can’t bring myself to have feelings about anything happening in 2017 right now"

legit douche chills

don't click kotaku links. they're not worth your time.

That's the thing, though.

A lot of times they are. But there needs to be *some* kind of editiorial process that keeps people from posting these sniping articles, particularly with that opening paragraph. It's not using the placeholder art to make some cogent point or a deeper analysis of Kickstarter; It's literally some dude railing on placeholder art, with a sprinkle of "lol, why would anyone donate to this".

It's embarrassing. Kotaku can (and does do) MUCH better than this nonsense.

I generally don't react to shoddy editorial work, because I think the more attention I give ill-conceived writing, the more exposure it has. I'm making an exception.

This is malicious, petulant sputtering.

Exactly my problem with it -- it is malicious and petulant.

It's using his platform at Kotaku as a personal, quick soapbox, not as a delivery for compelling content.

The fact that Kotaku thinks complaining about small, placeholder box art is worthy of an 'article' sums that place up pretty well.

It doesn't, that isn't very fair IMO. I agree that it shouldn't have passed any reasonable editorial hurdle, but it doesn't speak for the whole website.

Seriously stop quoting that ridiculous article. I can't understand fans wasting time and effort giving that guy exposure.

in other news...game has now creeped past 200% funded from original goal. Feels good.

Kotaku vs GameTrailers

...I'll get my news coverage from people that actually like video games, thank you very much.

Cheap-shot journalism = the new hipster cool

Jason told me on Twitter that Owen is a freelance writer and not part of the Kotaku main staff; that piece went up since most of the are out today.

I'd say let's ignore this and keep pushing forward. Also shout outs to Jason for listening and giving Owen feedback.

Back to Shenmue.

They haven't updated that $4m stretch goal graphic yet. Reached dammit.

So the next milestone is "Infiltration Mission" in Baisha. Any ideas on what that entails? Sounds so good.

They could really have done a better job in explaining the stretch goals. Maybe it was mentioned during that Twitch interview, but right now I also have idea what most of them really mean.

While i am in agreement in about the Kotaku thing, let's focus on the positive :)

I never thought that the PS4 physical would do this much for the campaign (I figured a lot, but not this much).

I was so close to backing the $1,500 tier to get myself in the game. I wish I had that money free.

I'm still hoping they out in a $750 tier to close the gap between the $500 and $1000 tiers. I suppose the only problem is making sure it is profitable enough since they would likely have to include whatever it is with all higher tiers (like the Corey Marshall voice message).

I'd imagine it's like the Yokosuka warehouse infiltration bit in Shenmue I. Even though I was about as graceful as a brick getting through that segment, I thought it was really cool.

Yea, I'm pretty sure they said Yu will go over the stretch goals in more detail later today or over the weekend. Pretty sure at least...

Yeah, Kotaku have barely mentioned Corey Marshall coming back besides a snide two sentence article, completely ignored the massive #SaveShenmue and 30 on the 3rd campaign that fans have organised, made no mention of the new tiers, the Yu Suzuki Q&A happening today or how positive today has been in general, but hey, a fucking shitty box art mockup?! Fuck, where's my laptop! Gotta publish this shit right now!

It's hardly like this is the first 'article' of that ilk to show up on Kotaku. It's par for the course for them at this point. Having a handful of actual good journalists there is drowned out by the sea of crap you have to sift through to find it.

It's not even the box art complaint that's the worst part, it's that the guy wanted a soap box so he could post how 'above' Kickstarter he is and thinking about games in the future. It's bottom of the barrel crap and as long as Kotaku gives it a prominent place on their website, they'll get roped in with it.

i abandoned kotaku years ago, but Jason is the reason i don't like seeing the whole ship get blamed for shit pieces here & there

he's a good dude & stuff like this is a big part of why it's not on par with say polygon

I sent Jason a PM a couple minutes ago just politely expressing disappointment with that article, and talking a bit about the ways in which fans have basically run this campaign in an unprecedented way, and sharing some details about things like the guy who runs the school in china and donated 10k.

Just putting that out there.

I like Jason and Patrick. Kotaku isn't all terrible but there is an abundance of that shitty type of article passed off as 'opinion', when it's clearly just an attempt at trolling to increase the writer's notoriety.

In this case that is only confirmed by his weird boasting on Twitter about getting a reaction.

Curious when the new video will be going up. Hoping it's really good with maybe a glimpse or two at new art? Main focus should be how awesome Shenmue is and how Shenmue 3 will continue the story.

Interesting... They haven't updated the rewards list to say that you have the choice between a physical edition for PS4 and PC on the higher tiers. It still only lists PC.

By the way, let me know if there's anything I can do to improve the OP. :P

they can't edit that

OP definitely needs a overhaul. Run down of tiers and maybe list of stretch goals? Feel like the giant "Sony's involvement" posts can come down. Let's focus on the game and the positives for the next two weeks as that's all been cleared up.

Alright I agree about the latter. I'll see what I can do about the rest. :P

They will eventually. In the update they specifically say,"All backers pledging for a $60 Reward tier or higher, will have the option of a PS4 Physical Copy as their platform choice. After the Kickstarter finishes, a survey will be sent out to backers in these tiers to confirm your choice of platform."

So everyone will confirm once the campaign ends.

Sounds good then!

How much do you guys think will be funded by the end of the Kickstarter?
My bets on around 7 million

I'm guessing low 5 million range. I expect an uptick at the end like most Kickstarters but I don't think it will be as big as some are hoping. Too much negativity surrounding it.

Hey it's a slow news day, Kotaku's covering all the angles people really care about.
seriously tho, this is dumb by Nick Denton standards.

Its Just ridiculous how there are like a million good things to report on the KS campaign , and Kotaku picks the placeholder boxart of all things to write an article on?
