Just played the first 30 minutes of my new Japanese copy of Shenmue 1. A few things struck me.

Ryo and Nozomi are very formal with each other and refer to one another as Hazuki and Haraski.

A lot of the voices are very similar to the English version in terms of the sound of the voices. Notable differences are Fuku-san and old man Yamagishi-san, who sound way more bad ass.

Tom really sounds like a foreigner, using broken Japanese spoken slowly with lots of English words thrown in.

It's odd having to run with the L trigger instead of the R trigger.

It's neat to see the coca-cola branded vending machines with the Fanta and Georgia Coffee brands in them.

I'll probably stop here, as I just wanted to try it and getting through three whole game without knowing the language would be pretty hard if I can't remember the order I'm supposed to do things. But it was neat to see this little bit!

Yooka-Laylee kinda splatted out. The devs didn't add a lot of stretch goals but honestly I think they had the funding secured and just didn't want to change the scope of their game, which I think is reasonable.

Suzuki needs to let in more people to those expense stretch goals. Like GET YOUR FACE ON THE BOTTOM OF RYO'S SHOE! do ittttt

considering the way shenmue was announced, unless there's something crazy to generate hype i would think shenmue III is definitely going to fall on the frontloaded side.

we'll see. shenmue 3 definitely is a first in kickstarter history and it could really go either way at this point. some people may just jump in at the end just to get onboard for the sake of it.

Actually what i said was still pretty accurate to that image outside of yooka, which essentially seemed to give up toward the end and definitely didnt have strong stretch goals. Shenmue has a ton of goals people want now.

Really disappointed the ragdoll reactions are not automatically included and instead on the 6m+ tier. I'm not going to begin to assume what money/time is needed but there have been lots of cheap, Indy games with decent ragdoll physics so I'm not sure why they are so high up on Shenmue's tier.

Actually makes it more frustrating seeing stuff that won't make the game.

I have to say I'm really impressed with how the project really turned around in terms of support after the well coordinated influx of updates and momentum on the 3rd. Very positive sign for the project!

well it all depends on the implementation. ragdoll in a virtua fighter style fighting engine with multiple opponents could be incredibly complex.

and again it needs to be stressed we're nowhere even near the end right now. there's every chance we could get that ragdoll stretch goal.

i fucking love walking around hong kong and looking at all the details. i love the shit out of shenmue II but i've never really just gone looking in all the nooks and crannies. i didn't even bother participating in any of the darts rivalries until a couple years ago.

really hope there are a few new darts rivals in shenmue 3. it doesn't matter about the money, it's all about the glory.

I'm at the end of disc one right now but it's still January so I'm just screwing around. I never realized how much exploration there is. It's pretty great doing things like bugging the guy at an electronics shop about Man Mo.

Shenmue 3 physical PS4 copy that is unque in case. I doubt the people backing it would ever want to sell it and that means free market quanities would be quite low. Meaning people looking to sell it for a profit when it finally gets released could make quite a bit.

What I'm trying to say is, we all hate scalpers... but if it make more money for the campaign in the short term.... We really should get together and broadcast how rare and valuable it could be, might mean some extra funding!

But they would have to include that in every tier above that, so he would have to sign thousands of copies. Plus there already is a signed tier, but it's for a poster.

Personally, I'd rather not have ragdoll physics at all since they almost always look unnatural and crappy.

for one, it's a huge sum even for rich people. it stopped notch funding psychonauts 2 at least.

You can't do that on Kickstarter, but I don't see why that would actually stop anyone who has that sort of money and wants to do it. If you want to invest (keyword here: invesntment) in Shenmue 3 as a partner and put up 5 million dollars for it, all you have to do is approach Yu Suzuki. He's not hiding anywhere. There is no question that some sort of deal can be worked out.

You won't need to do that. All you need to do is convince the current 50,000 backers or so (at present) to pledge for the $300 reward, which means:

$300 x 50,000 -> $15,000,000

... Yu would have a lot of work signing all these rewards, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind! All these backers are right here - they just need to be contacted and convinced...

i totally forgot how you can choose multiple options when talking with fangmei and how it changes her attitude to you.

feels like a small-scale experiment for what's going to turn into the rapport system in 3. i wonder how that'll all play out with shenhua. yu suzuki said something about how it may affect how cooperative she is with you, meaning they might have to work together on something.

i don't mean like, pushing a block or something.

imagine this:

through the game you have opportunities to lie or tell the truth to shenhua. then there's an important part of the game where you have to tell a lie to advance. if you'd told her the truth through the rest of the game she'd play along with the lie knowing that you'd only do it if you had to. if you lied to her earlier in the game, she wouldn't cooperate.

Name one cheap indie game with ragdoll reactions. Not physics after death, but reactions implying blending ragdoll with live animations like Star Citizen or I believe Ryse.
