Just played the first 30 minutes of my new Japanese copy of Shenmue 1. A few things struck me.
Ryo and Nozomi are very formal with each other and refer to one another as Hazuki and Haraski.
A lot of the voices are very similar to the English version in terms of the sound of the voices. Notable differences are Fuku-san and old man Yamagishi-san, who sound way more bad ass.
Tom really sounds like a foreigner, using broken Japanese spoken slowly with lots of English words thrown in.
It's odd having to run with the L trigger instead of the R trigger.
It's neat to see the coca-cola branded vending machines with the Fanta and Georgia Coffee brands in them.
I'll probably stop here, as I just wanted to try it and getting through three whole game without knowing the language would be pretty hard if I can't remember the order I'm supposed to do things. But it was neat to see this little bit!
