Have you heard of this? It is reminiscent of Daft Punk.

No it really isn't, not one bit actually.

To be honest it's fucking terrible. All the elements of today's pop music I can't fucking stand.

Yes, it is a good album. No It is not reminiscent of Daft Punk. Where did you even get this idea??

I thought it was great the first listen through but now think it's only alright -> good.
Much better than mainstream pop music which permutated doesn't seem to think

You guys need higher standards.

If you want some good music I'd be happy to recommend some. Feel free to let me know when you're tired of listening to auto-tuned, poorly produced bullshit.

Peace.

No need to act all elitist about the music you like. We're enjoying this album, what's wrong with that?

Enjoy it, that's fine, don't pretend that it's anything like Daft Punk or that it's not plagued with the same shit as most pop these days.

That's it, no elitism, just being realistic. My last post probably came off as more douchey than it was originally intended so my bad.

It's quite alright. I agree on the comparing it to Daft Punk note, I don't even know where that comes from apart from the name 'discovery'.

The low quality youtube audio really doesn't do it justice. I've got the cd right here and it sounds much better.

It's not the quality that sucks. Abusive use of vocoder + this dull pop shit that kind of drops everywhere recently. Hell, even the rhythms are weak.

Truly a source of shitspiration.

Not really Daft Punk but quite enjoyable. To be fair, comparing to DP is very very unfair for every band because, well, nothing even comes close the the sound Daft Punk delivers.

I love the bit where they use the default drum kit.

Shoot.

I hate to join the angry mob, but it's not that great.

Vampire Weekend's s/t debut was great, Ra Ra Riot's LP Rhumb Line was great, so you'd think a combination of the two, similar in style and sound, bands would be fantastic, but it ultimately falls short of the two aforementioned albums.

The cover of MJ's I Want You Back is novel at best. BUT, to Discovery's credit, So Insane, Swing Tree and Osaka Loop Line are phenomenal tracks. I suppose it's not all bad, it's just like, 3 or 4 great tracks surrounded by terrible, pandering filler.

(Fun Fact: Discovery got their name from Daft Punk's fucking AMAZING album of the same name)

Man seeing people hate on this album reminds me of the terrible cokemachineglow review when it first came out. I don't get why such an obviously fun, disposable album can raise such ire.

I really enjoyed the record when it first came out, may have to revisit it, but I do like the J5 cover. You have to get over the hump of the fact that they are using some more contemporary R&B production, but I think the fun and joy they had creating it carries through.

No stranger to musical elitism, though, I had to battle bein' a snob myself a lot when I was younger.

EDIT: Oh yeah, sounds nothing like Daft Punk. Maybe you could say autotune/vocoder, but that'd be a pretty huge stretch too. And Discovery didn't do themselves any favors naming themselves after what has been scientifically proven as the best album ever.

CMG is sometimes reactionary to blog/P4K hype.

As far as bands that pay homage to Daft Punk's Discovery go, Walter Meego's Voyager is a much better pop album that samples Discovery pretty often. The lead single "Forever" is a little too sweet, but songs like "Letting Go," "Keyhole," and "Wanna Be A Star" are great.

Yeah, CMG sometimes feels like the stereotype of P4k's elitism magnified to P4k itself. I really stopped reading most online music reviews a while ago, though.

I'll definitely check out Meego, though. I recently downloaded a chiptune Daft Punk tribute album that had some pretty great spots.

Fair enough they are not as good as Daft Punk, I agree. But to say they are nothing like them is juct plain idiotic. They very clearly do the same type of electro dance music with heavy use of vocoders and this is non-negotiable.

zzzzzzzZZZZZzzzz

for anyone that thought there would be good music in this thread try these
baby diamonds - dB
simian mobile disco - temporary pleasure
kissy sell out - youth

3 albums that are awesome and just released

So sharing a genre means they're comparable enough to namedrop? The Rolling Stones are like Interpol! Kate Bush is like Britney Spears!

Man I actually really enjoyed the album myself when it came out but Daft Punk's got a pretty separate style. Not even taking into account good v bad, Daft Punk's roots are much more firmly in house/techno whereas these guys are pretty pop/R&B. Some of the rxns in here probably stem from people expecting a connection closer to the propulsive nature of Daft Punk than the more sugary Discovery.

EDIT: Well, that and some people are snobs. =P

Album Leaf
M83
Mum

I'm not terribly familiar with Mum, but M83 has some of the most hit-or-miss discography of around and Album Leaf's not even close to the same vein of music as Discovery, beyond say the use of electronic instruments.

I'm not making a judgment on your taste (I do like a lot M83 songs, for sure, and Album Leaf certainly seems inoffensive enough), but it doesn't come off well when you write off an entire style of music as bad. Especially when your qualms with Discovery seem to be mostly around a production style.

EDIT: You added a few more artists. Most of my comments still stand, though of the list Air is a decent enough comparison.

No doubt, I didn't mean they're the exact same but it's in the realm.

M83 had a stellar first two albums, Album Leafs newer stuff is more vocal.

Air and Ugress are very good. Air and Stereolab are both AMAZING live.

Discovery's production has no soul, too clean and processed. All the others I mentioned feel warmer.

Oh, I know you didn't mean the exact same. I think part of the problem is I see Discovery as pretty solidly a pop group, whereas the Daft Punk comparison is making everybody think of them as an electronica outfit. Looking at them like that, I could easily see one being disappointed.

I haven't checked out Ugress, but I love Air and Stereolab a ton. Really anticipating the new Air album.

What'd you think of Sundays=Love? All of M83's albums have had these bizarre stylistic shifts, but I still enjoyed it. Also felt like there were less duff tracks on it than Before the Dawn Heals Us.
