Final Fantasy Tactics fans: Are there any good similar games out there?

Tactics Ogre.

Idg why people are recommending Disgaea, they work very differently in battle.

I really want a FFT2. Advance don't count.

Best t-rpg ever. Sure it's in japanese but i could finish it with little guidance from a faq. You just have to figure out the menus :p The game is super hard and the mecha fusion system makes you crazy, and i'm not even a gundam fan at all. never saw the show.

Tactics Ogre series is more like FF Tactics.

2nd best imo would be the Shining Force series. Jeanne D' Arc on PSP was really good.

Disgaea would be a good one too but not sure if you like quick paced action with comedy/anime style scenarios.

Oh for PC and Xbox....errr......not really...

If you want to play some games unreleased in the west, here's a link with translations for several SRPGs. There might be some pure Strategy games there too though.

On the list I can personally vouch for Utawarerumono from Leaf, because it's a pretty good game. It's actually a hybrid between a VN and SRPG. (Note: It does have 18+ scenes).

On a related note, Leaf also has another SRPG series--Tears to Tiara (again 18+), the first of which is on that list, and the second of which has an official English release by Atlus USA / NISA (not 18+). Also, the second game was co-developed with Sting, who helped with console ports of Leaf's games, and also made some games mentioned earlier in this thread, like the Yggdra series.

If you want something not too hard, on that same list are translations for TGL's Farland Story series (1-6, 7 is not translated). I've not played them myself, but I've heard that they're pretty easy, and they've got awesome music too.

They're a bit dated--the first came out in 1993, and they are out of print, so unfortunately, it's pretty difficult to get a hold of them legally. Also they're PC-98 games, so you'll need an emulator or an actual PC-98 (good luck with this!) to play them.

There are a number of other Farland games, on Windows, and a few consoles (SNES, PC-FX) but these and another one, Farland Symphony, are the only English ones (except for 7).

TGL also made another series under one of their adult subsidiaries, Mugen, called Horny Sweeper (also on PC-98), which is fairly similar, although it is 18+ (as if the name didn't make it obvious.enough), and I've no idea on the quality, and on top of that neither of the two games has a translation.

TGL also made a few other RPGs, they're not SRPGs though. They also have their Sword Dancer series, which is an Action RPG series, as well as a traditional top-down RPG called Appare Den.

Under their adult brand, GIGA, they made the 18+ Top-Down RPG series Harlem Blade, made in fact by the same staff behind Farland. While these are not SRPGs, I thought I'd mention them since they kind of fit in this topic. Btw, none of these are translated.

One thing to point out, TGL's games (including GIGA and Mugen) tend to have really good soundtracks, and some of their composers also worked on the SRPGs from Leaf that I mentioned a few paragraphs above.

Speaking of Japanese PC SRPGs, there are also a number of other good ones not on that list, if you're not bothered by adult content at least. There's Eien no Aselia from Xuse, which has an English version sold by JAST USA, and the English version has no adult content.

Another really good one, this time with adult content, is Eushully's Kamidori Alchemy Meister which has a fan translation. Eushully also has a fairly large series of SRPGs called Ikusa Megami, none of which have translations outside the interface, and some machine translated story. Kamidori is widely considered to be one of the best SRPGs ever.

On a related note, there's also Sengoku Rance from Alicesoft (again 18+), which has a fan translation, and is also really good. It's part of a larger series, most of which are not SRPGs, but just pure RPGs.

There are also some pretty good western PC SRPGs. X-Com was already mentioned, there's also Xenonauts which is pretty similar.

Then you have the Heroes of Might and Magic series, which is generally well-liked, just don't play the HD release of the 3rd game. I don't know much about western SRPGs, since I prefer Japanese ones, but these should be pretty good.

Front Mission 3 is good. 1, 4 and 5 are even better(well 1 is obviously much older and missing a lot of features, but still pretty good). I hear two isn't that bad if you get the version without the long ass load times, but I'm not 100% sure there is a translation for it out there. I wanna say there is one though...

Nice to see some mention of Kartia. I remember that game being decent, but it's been many years since I played it...perhaps it doesn't hold up. I played through Front Mission 3 pretty recently, and that game is still really good (although the skill system is somewhat opaque). Agreed with the comments on Banner Saga being disappointing. Beautiful, gorgeous art but the game itself falls flat.

I've been beating a dead horse about this, but I really wish that Squeenix would release new iterations in the Tactics series on mobile. Perfect platform for it, and it doesn't need to be graphically intensive.

Such a shame this variety of SRPG's have fallen out of popularity. FFT is still the king to me. Disgaea is the only surviving franchise with this style of play, thankfully it's a very good series overall (a few have hated on it in here, though it's all opinion, I think they're great games, but a totally different tone and approach compared to the likes of FFT and Tactics Ogre). PSP had some great ones, as people have already mentioned here, as did the Nintendo DS.

Western tactical RPGs/Strategies tend to completely ignore height, for some sad reason. The X-Com games have been an exception, at least (even with all the criticisms I had of the new XCOM, at least it did Z-Axis movement). Dunno what the obsessions is in the west to make tactical battlefields look like a chessboard, since it makes battles much less interesting.

Sorry to bump a weeks old thread, but I just remembered a game that all FF Tactics fans should play: Crimson Shroud for 3DS.

It's not a grid-based strategy game like FFT, but rather a more traditional turn-based RPG that relies heavily on tabletop elements (think 'roll dice for damage,' literally).

Story by Yasumi Matsuno, music by Hitoshi Sakimoto (and others), localization by Alex O Smith and Joseph Reeder, character design by Hideo Minaba. That should be more than enough to sell FFT and FFXII fans on it, but since it's such a small-scale game and digital-only, I feel like it has been overlooked.

I downloaded it not knowing if I'd like it and ended up just falling completely in love with it.
