John McCain says Trump just fired up the crazies

Over the weekend, Donald Trump held a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, that attracted several thousand people. He shared the stage with the father of a man who was killed by an undocumented immigrant—and Trump continued his rant against illegal immigration that began when he launched his campaign and started to surge in the polls. Not every Republican in Arizona was pleased with Trump’s visit. Senator John McCain, the Party’s Presidential nominee in 2008, reacted to the event with dismay.

“It’s very bad,” McCain, who was eager to talk about Trump, told me on Monday when I stopped by his Senate office. The Senator is up for reëlection in 2016 and he pays close attention to how the issue of immigration is playing in his state. He was particularly rankled by Trump’s rally. “This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me,” McCain said. “Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.”

Unfortunately, McCain is a dying breed of Republican. I think every single one of the nominees is crazy. Well, almost...

He's not wrong that this is bad for the party. If Trump gets even more popular, it'll be tough to distance his remarks from the republican brand when the time comes to try and win the Hispanic vote.

Also, I serious doubt these are just "the crazies" getting pumped up. Trump doesn't just have support from a fringe minority here.

You mean the exact same crazies you tried to woo when you unleashed Sarah Palin on the world?

The crazies that regularly decide local and state elections for your party?

Do go on...

The guy who basically legitimized the entire tea party movement by bringing Palin into the national spotlight is complaining about riling the crazies?

Go fuck yourself, McCain.

This is a lot of candor coming from the guy who had Palin as his running mate. Too bad he didn't do more to fight against it when it counted.

And by "crazies" Senator McCain really means "Republicans". Because they are the only ones who are going to Trump rallys.

He would know.

He did the same with his VP choice.

I kinda feel like Palin crazies aren't quite on the same level.

If only because these people have just gotten more radical as the time has gone on.

Republicans hate Trump because he isn't using the dogwhistles and obfuscation like the rest of them. He's speaking the truth as they see it to their normal rhetoric.

Polls show it's working. Not like he has anything to lose.

Will sleep in his money bed either way.

the problem is that this is going to be really good for the primaries, but not so much for the general election

I feel like every time the republicans lose an election they come back and find even more insane candidates. Mccain and Romney seem so tame compared to this election's potential republican nominees.

Good.

The fewer war mongers running the country, the better.

I don't think it's getting any better. If Trump is a reflection of the newer Republican than you're in for a world of hurt. The way Trump is catalyzing support through hatred for undocumented immigrants is very troubling. His entire platform seems to be built on fear and outrage.

Obama: Targeting Hispanics won't get them back in office. I knew the republicans wouldn't go down without a fight, but this is different. They crossed the line.

Biden: You crossed the line first, sir. You squeezed and hammered them to the point of desperation. And in their desperation they turned to a man they didn't fully understand.

Obama: Politicians aren't complicated, Joe. We just need to figure out what he's after.

Biden: With respect, Mr. President, perhaps this is a man that you don't fully understand either. A long time ago, I watched Trump tour the cable news circuit and speak on various social issues. Here was an obviously wealthy individual going on about a mother's right to choose, common sense gun control and healthcare availability for all. This man flew in the face of the lies the right had been trying to sell since Reagan.

Obama: Then why run as a Republican?

Biden: Well, because he thinks it good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Judging by my Facebook feed, the whole daggum base is crazy. Republicans and right wing media have been beating the crazy drum for 30+ years, it should be no surprise that those drinking the kool-aid are certifiably insane at this point.

Didn't realize Trump was still doubling down on the racism platform.

Excellent.

It's obviously working, and he's certainly found an audience receptive to his ideas (or at least his open discussion of things that people in that audience already believe). The question is whether Trump will pull the eventual GOP nominee to the right in the same way that Bernie Sanders supporters hope that he pulls Hillary to the left. I sure hope so - the broader American population needs to see what the political far right truly believes, and Trump is providing the perfect spotlight for that.

If that's the "only" thing you remember of McCain's presidential run, there's no point in my even going into the other stuff. Your selective memory is just too strong.

Well, I'm Canadian, so forgive me for not following it so closely. I just see what gets posted on my interwebs!

One relatively sensible moment isn't the definition of his campaign. That was the exception, not his standard operating procedure.

Good to know.
