Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Early 2016. PS4 Holiday 2016

Insane. A year exclusive. Well played MS, well played.

Why? I doubt that anyone will buy XBO for a game which will be released on a platform they already own down the line. PS4 version is likely to get all DLC in one package as well.

This is one the worst examples of moneyhatting which is totally destructive for the industry and gives little benefits to the paying side as well.

The logic revolves entirely around Microsoft.

They tried being as ambiguous as possible in order to make it sound like a full exclusive.

Gamers saw right through that, so that plan failed.

Now they are intentionally telling that it is a one-year exclusive because they came to realize how many players were willing to wait it out in order to play it on PS4. This is a calculated move designed to force the hands of such players into biting the XBone bullet.

This makes sense. They could also have been in continued negotiations with MSFT on length of exclusivity up until recently.

I doubt many people will be interested a year later.

I can't speak for PS4 users, but generally if it is a game I had interest in purchasing at any point, I don't care when it gets released, I'd still buy it. Unless you have multiple platforms, I don't think people will just disregard it.

Yep summer would be better. Give Uncharted 4 like March/April/May and launch TR in June like AK.

I already think TR will get eaten alive this fall, and big reason the first game did so well is because it launched in March
.

True, i had forgot about that, and even then the game didn't sold the expected for them. Releasing at the same day of F4 doesn't make much more sense either. This is weird...

I'll may be buying an XONE later this year on Black Friday, so theres a chance I'll play it before the PS4 releases. But after playing the first game for the second time, I can't say I'm excited at all.

You know what would be really hilarious/fucked up? IF it ends up selling more on PS4 a year later than XB1 at launch. It's not happening but if it did, lmao.

I don't know...maybe the installed bases difference will be so big that even if a minority of ps4 owners get it, it can sell more.

And isn't TR a IP that sell most/very well in europe, the strongest ps4 market?

Most likely timed to coincide with Super Street Fighter V for the Xbone. These publishers aren't dumb.

Can't tell if trolling....but I'll take it seriously.

First off, unlike ROTR, Sony and Capcom said straight away that Street Fighter V is a PS4 console exclusive. Recently at EVO, Capcom also said they're not going to be doing the "Super Street Fighter" release like they've done in the past, rather it'll all be F2P/DLC. This is in complete contrast to Microsoft who was very cagey on whether ROTR was timed or not, and kept the mantra of "Xbox Exclusive - Holiday 2015" up until today when Square Enix finally cleared the air.

One year for the PS4 version? Jesus Christ, I expected six months maximum. I can't say I'm happy about this, at all.

Aren't most Tomb Raider players on Playstation anyway, according to statistics? They're shooting themselves in the foot with this timed exclusivity, IMO.

They knew the numbers of the playerbase, and decided whatever offer Microsoft threw at them was worth the gamble.

The problem is SE choose Holiday for it :\
You really don't want to release a late port in Holiday

Problem is that the Uncharted 4 delay fucked up their plans imo.
Even if the exclusivity window was 6 months (we don't know atm), they wouldn't launch against Uncharted 4 because they would lose a lot of sales, most of PS4 users would choose Uncharted.
Holiday 2016, definitive edition with all the DLCs maybe at a more competitive price could work....although yeah it's a long wait, hype will be gone by then for a lot of people.
They have fucked up with their PS4 sales potential anyway.
Hopefully PC sales will be strong for them.

The irony is a large part of why they penned the deal was to avoid competing directly with Uncharted 4 on PS4 and lo and behold UC4 is probably going to be a fall 2016 title. What a backfire.

Yup, it sounds like this game will have a chance to die two holiday seasons in a row. That's unique!

wat

One year console exclusivity...that's more than what i thought it would be.

Maybe the ps4 version will be the "Game of the year/Definite" one.

That's the only way they can justify having the game coming 1 year later....

Sounds like a very familiar indie parity clause. XD

Anyway 1 year is more than I thought. Pretty bummed out personally....

So they're sending the game out to die twice, once on the day Fallout 4 comes out and again a year later when nobody will give a shit anymore. Great strategy SE.

Sort of how I feel. Holiday 2016 is PACKED, and Tomb Raider comes out the same day as Fallout 4. That's going to be a slaughter. Then you factor in all those other big Microsoft holiday titles, toss in some Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty, and my optimism for RotTR selling gangbusters is quite slim...

... So a year-late port released in Holiday 2017 against what's sure to be even more big titles certainly won't do much better, even on a system with a higher number of fans.

I really don't understand it. Square Enix complained quite publicly about how disappointed they were with Tomb Raider's sales for at least two to three years, despite there being five platforms for it to make money on. The fact they're doing this means MS paid them a LOT of money... but then MS's investment seems bizarre since it's such a crowded Holiday 2016 and it's not likely they'll see much return on that investment. I think it's a bizarre choice.

And a part of me wonders if all that money spent on a 1 year exclusive couldn't have been better spent on games like Phantom Dust or, I don't know, a new Blinx the Time Sweeper or something...

This makes sense. They could also have been in continued negotiations with MSFT on length of exclusivity up until recently.

I like to think Square Enix sees where this generation is going and is trying to get PS4/PC gamers on board to have something to look forward to so they can at least recoup their losses. I'd imagine someone at MS is pretty pissed SE did this after they did everything in their power to make RotTR look like an Xbone exclusive at E3.

Like I said people may have other games they want at that time especially in the holiday season where devs pile games up.

I am going to get this because I like TR cant speak for other people though.

Well, there goes my plan to buy an XBO this year then. Q4 2015 plus my backlog should be enough until the PC version Q1 2016.

So the next reason to buy an XBO is... Quantum Break? Man I hope that game turns out to be amazing.

People keep saying this but if Tomb Raider gets an XB1 bundle (which it likely will), it's not really being sent out to die at all. MS has a marketing deal for both titles (TR and Fallout)...I'm sure they know what they're doing. This game exists as a holiday exclusive in the first place to move consoles.

No instead what will happen is that the game will be so devalued you can pick up a 10$ digital code 1 month after it launched like Assassins Creed.

People buy more than one game per month. Battlefront, Call of Duty, Fallout and Tomb Raider will all sell well.

I'm honestly surprised they're sticking with the November 10th release date for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 given Fallout 4 comes out on the same day.

So glad I bought a One, hopefully I will be able to have the money and time to enjoy it when it comes out. For a second, I thought that version got delayed as well.

I'm sure SE got plenty of money from Microsoft.

Yeah which is a good thing for SE. Bird in the hand is better than two in the bush...

Those game is not guaranteed to make an enormous amount so probably better that SE gets money upfront.

Still getting it on XB1 then wait for Steam crazy sale on PC. That should give PC time to iron out bugs. Learned my lesson not to buy PC games on day one. I'm looking at you, Batman: Arkham Knight and few games...

MS will probably bundle this game like they did with Assassin's Creed Unity. It'll be in every Xbone bundle sold this holiday.

That's so dumb. Now that we all know that the game will come to PS4 and PC, and when, WHO is gonna buy an Xbox One this holiday ?

They should have keep this secret for at least 2016.

I guess you really had your bases covered then, because those are two completely different scenarios.

Not really. I was very specific in the case of the late 2016 scenario. No way did I believe Microsoft would cut this deal only for it to show up on PS4 in 3 or 6 months.

No instead what will happen is that the game will be so devalued you can pick up a 10$ digital code 1 month after it launched like Assassins Creed.

Ha! That's certainly a possibility. Same thing will likely happen with Gears of War.

That doesn't really affect people who are interested in a new console. That's a plus for current XB1 owners for sure though.

Maybe that just meant complete exclusivity, so in regards to the PC release.

Nope, Kagari posted a clarification. When UC4 was delayed, TR was on track for Spring 2016 on both PS4/PC.

My bet is that the delay of UC4 caused TR on PS4 to be pushed back to fall 2016.

One year apart will mean, that it'll have to gain mindshare twice, possibly also having two huge marketing campaigns. MS will probably handle the marketing the first time around.
SE must've gotten a really big check.

Well, my point wasn't in Sony demanding/requesting any special feature. Was about Square trying to make their product more desirable 1 year later, at the busiest time of the year.

I think Sony doesn't give a damn if square decides to release a barebones version. They will have their own games to worry about.
