Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Early 2016. PS4 Holiday 2016

This is starting to look like a bad deal for everybody depending on how much MS paid.

It's definitely not a bad deal for Xbox One owners planning to buy Tomb Raider later this year. The Xbox One version gets exclusive attention from not just the dev team, but we know Microsoft are heavily involved as well. And with regards to how much Microsoft paid, it honestly may not even matter. We know it had to be something good to get Square to do something like this, and of course we know Microsoft definitely has the money to throw around.

It's great news for Xbox because Microsoft has effectively secured, for all intents and purposes, as close to a next gen console exclusive to a sequel for one of the best games of the last generation. They clearly gave the publisher some serious financial peace of mind, which means the game likely doesn't need to sell quite as much to be a profitable venture for Square Enix. And on top of that there's also a 360 version being released, and we all know there's an amazingly healthy install base on the 360. In Microsoft's most ideal and preferred scenario there would be a lot of 360 owners dying to play the next gen console version of the game that go out and upgrade to an xbox one for the holidays in order to not miss out on the next gen fun.

I think Microsoft are in a great position unless the game is a total critical bomb and literally doesn't sell at all.

Seems a bit early to announce this..Looks like I'll hold off for the GOTY edition on PS4(I hope it'll even be cheaper by then). Won't bother with the X1 version because I'll be deep in some halo this fall, among other games..

They probably don't want a Batman scenario where PC was outcourced to third parties which cost money(?) since it was so shit. Batman still sold a ton on console though.

So they don't want to repeat that scenario.

They also don't want to repeat the scenario where they sell games to their fans, apparently.

Even without this confirmation, there was no way I was going to not wait for this to come out on PC and play it console beforehand.

Actually, we probably actually do want them to outsource the PC version to a third party, just like they did with Tomb Raider (2013). Nixxes is one of, if not the best, PC port houses out there.

Honestly, whatever MS paid for a full year of exclusivity was too much. I assume (logically) that they made the deal to sell XB1s. But, I never saw TR as a "system seller"

Pretty sure it was mainly there to have something to put up against uncharted, which then slipped to 2016.

If its a good game Ill pick it up, though less impetus when that happens due to the exclusivity period - I found the first game pretty average, just an Uncharted clone with a poorly characterised female lead - very little to do with TR legacy beyond its heroine. I hear CD were looking to improve on that significantly.

It be interesting to see how it reviews before and after Uncharted 4 as thats likely to be its benchmark. Also I wonder how SE will proceed with the follow up...

Should have tried to get in front of Uncharted 4, not after, both graphics and gameplay. The port would have year old game design and cross-gen tech.

I loved Tomb Raider. I did. But let's not go crazy here folks

Close to a next gen console exclusive... what does that even mean? It's a timed exclusive. Timed. Exclusive.

He means as close as you get to an exclusive without it actually being fully exclusive. Despite his post having a slight whiff of pr, I actually agree with that part. The rest of it though...

Well, compared to the original Mass Effect, 12 months is okay. It's longer than I was expecting, to be honest. I'm wondering if Uncharted 4 being delayed actually encouraged SE to release in holiday 2016 rather than in Q1/Q2 2016. It would have been crapping itself if it had agreed to 6 months and then Sony delayed Uncharted 4 by roughly the same amount.

What? No seriously? What?

I do not believe for one millisecond that you'd be saying the same thing if Sony had exclusivity.

Well therein lies your problem and the problem with a lot of other people that frequent this forum. It is easily one of the best games of the last generation, and the only reason why that is even in doubt right now is due to the fact that Microsoft went ahead and secured a deal for the game that people don't like. I know it, you know it, others know it, the enormously positive reaction from the definitive edition release on this very forum is further evidence of how good this game is. I honestly never played and beat this on last gen systems. I played and beat it on the PC pretty recently and loved every moment of it. I would classify it as one of the stronger games of the last generation, and definitely something that appeals to me as a gamer.

If you honestly think whether a game is on PlayStation or Xbox seriously makes me think any less or more of it then you're horribly incorrect in that assumption. I'm insanely jealous of the fact that the PS4 gets first dibs on a true FF7 remake. The fact that it may be a timed exclusive doesn't make it any less of a big deal. No, I'm not equating Tomb Raider's significance to the long awaited and almost dreamlike project that is a true Final Fantasy 7 remake. I'm just using it as an example.

I'm even more jealous that the PS4 has a next gen exclusive on Persona 5. Persona is a franchise whose quality and significance I've defended against even the most hardcore of xbox gamers who felt it wasn't a big deal, when in fact it very clearly is. So trust that my impression of this deal would be the same even if it were Sony on the other side of it. The significance of Tomb Raider being exclusive for the holiday with Uncharted 4 immediately trailing it would be insane. And this deal would still be huge even if Uncharted 4 weren't quickly following behind it.

Yes, lol

That read like some Greenberg level PR.

Well, I proudly shook his hand and took some pictures with him at E3. Maybe it rubbed off on me or something. ;) Ya, you guys need to realize how old that line of attack is right now. Not everybody that disagrees with you guys about things relating to xbox works for Microsoft or is slinging Microsoft PR.

It's okay to admit what's happening here, because it's transparent as hell. If Sony had made the same deal, there wouldn't be anywhere near this kind of negativity around the reboot and its sequel. People will tell me I'm wrong, but the rapid shift in tone speaks volumes from back during the definitive edition release on PS4 and Xbox One.

Slight whiff? It stinks.

Nobody gets what they wanted with this deal.

Microsoft do. SE might get what they want as well. We really don't know what kind of deal MS made with them, so it's tough to say.

And I'm not exactly thrilled about exclusivity deals either, but it is what it is. If my PC can run it, I might get it for that. If not, I'll wait for the ps4 release.

And there's no whiff of PR.

There is.

Can we say...

Rise of the Tomb Raider is exclusive to PS4 on Holiday 2016?

I loled. Someone gif that.

I'll take one copy of Tomb Raider please. Hold the salt.

Reason #18765382 why it's great to own all 3 current consoles.

Own both consoles and a PC. I'll probably buy it used or something of that nature. Can't support that year long exclusivity. I think it's garbage and thankfully, there are plenty of other viable options on release.

It's not a series I feel I need to play day 1. I'll grab it and enjoy it when it hits PS4 eventually, I have too much to play as it is.

What? No seriously? What?

I do not believe for one millisecond that you'd be saying the same thing if Sony had exclusivity.

What is it with you and witch hunts?

Tomb Raider was multiplat last gen so your post doesn't make a great deal of sense. It was a fantastic game. There have been many threads pre-announcement of Rise comparing the quality of TR vs Uncharted and there was a genuinely large chunk who liked Tomb Raider more.

It is a legitimately fantastic game in my opinion and I personally prefer it over Uncharted mainly because I think the gameplay/gunplay aspects of it are a bit better. While the VA and story and stuff are better in Uncharted, I'm not usually one who is big on that stuff so its a non issue for me.

Where your witch hunt should move is to Horizon threads. Sniff out posters who are looking forward to Tomb Raider but want to shit post Horizon.

Show me a post of yours pre 'Microsoft-Exclusivity-Announcement' where you heap a similar level of praise on Tomb Raider 2013. If you can do that I will apologise and take it back.

I hadn't played it at all really prior to the announcement, and I've said that openly. The announcement and all the people losing their shit over the announcement convinced me I had to try and beat the reboot before the new game came out and I loved every moment of it.

So, yea, I have no shame saying that the xbox announcement and all the buzz around it gave me an extra shove into finally trying and then beating the game. I'm sure I'm not the only gamer that has ever been guilty of such a thing. I hadn't even considered games like sleeping dogs till someone decided to use a gif in an effort to troll my excitement about the combat in ryse. I had heard about sleeping dogs, but I had no idea that combat was anything like what it turned out to be. So when it comes to gaming there's really no telling what exactly will provide you with the inspiration to go out and try a game you never played before. For the new Tomb Raider reboot, the xbox one announcement for this game was it. And the definitive edition buzz had a role too, just not nearly as much as the xbox announcement did. I just had to see what Microsoft was willing to go through all that trouble to secure, and I just had to find out what exactly was making people so angry with regards to the announcement, and when all the smoke cleared and I had finally finished it on the PC, I thought it was a fantastic game that I was crazy to have missed out on.

Why are you jealous don't you own a Ps4?

Nope, but I'm definitely buying one for Persona 5. See, I can admit with zero hesitation that I clearly prefer the Xbox One as a platform, and would love nothing more than to see Persona 5 announced for it. But seeing as how that doesn't look like it will happen, I need a PS4 to play Persona 5.

I'm excited as hell about Uncharted 4 also, but Persona 5 has clearly overtaken it on my excitement meter. There's a reason I was nagging any and everybody associated with Microsoft and Xbox during my time in LA for E3 about getting more JRPGs on the Xbox One. If it weren't for those Sakaguchi JRPGs, I wouldn't even be such a humungous Halo fan right now. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey were my gateways to the xbox ecosystem, and as far as I'm concerned it's the primary aspect of the PS4 as a platform and its lineup that makes me most envious of people who already own one.

Horizon is nothing like Tomb Raider. That comparison needs to die.

How does Microsoft benefit when the game is launching in a year packed with games and on the same day as fallout? I can't imagine picking up a franchise that sold better on PlayStation and was extremely hot in Europe was cheap. Pay for it only to have their own games and other marketing agreements for bigger franchises overshadow it. That's not a win.

I loved the Tomb Raider reboot, but I'm not happy about them trying to go back to the old formula with RotTR. I can now say that without seeming like I have sour grapes because I don't own an XB1.

Really? Its the reason I'm looking so forward to Horizon though. Based off the E3 footage it looks like Tomb Raider with dinomechs. That sounds fucking awesome.

Women with bows that climbs trees. That is where the comparisons end for me. Horizon is an open-world RPG. I want something like The Witcher 3 with much better combat so if it turned out be a RPG-lite action/adventure game like Tomb Raider I would be disappointed.

What is it with you and witch hunts?
I am a firm believer that past behaviour is a good indicator for present and future behaviour. But I don't rally call it a 'Witch Hunt' when any hunting isn't actually necessary.
.

Taking into account the general nature of Senjutsu's posts it makes perfect sense. Pump up the quality of the previous game to make the (timed) exclusivity of the sequel seem like a bigger positive for Microsoft than it might actually be. I think it's rather obvious the angle I was going for and therefore my post makes perfect sense in that context. Whether I'm correct or not is something only Senjutsu will only ever truly know, but as above, past behaviour etc.

I enjoyed Tomb Raider 2013 and in all likelihood I will purchase the sequel at some point in the future. I have never shied away from that fact.

Where your witch hunt should move is to Horizon threads. Sniff out posters who are looking forward to Tomb Raider but want to shit post Horizon.
Now who's not making sense?
Earlier this week I was having a go at you for saying The Last of Us did nothing original, yet you don't seem to let the lack of originality dissuade you from the new Tomb Raider game. The actually quality/potential quality of either title was never part of the question.

And bringing up Horizon at all is really counter-productive to whatever point you're trying to make, since it has one of the most original premises of any current gen AAA game thus far.

1 year is way too long of a wait. I'll be grabbing the XB1 version and if/when the superior PS4 version hits, I'll double dip.

They probably don't want a Batman scenario where PC was outcourced to third parties which cost money(?) since it was so shit. Batman still sold a ton on console though.

So they don't want to repeat that scenario.

You mean they didn't want to pay for Nixxes to port it again? Nixxes did an amazing job with the last game on PC.

Basically I just want more people to give money to Nixxes because they're awesome lol

He means as close as you get to an exclusive without it actually being fully exclusive. Despite his post having a slight whiff of pr, I actually agree with that part. The rest of it though...

Just call it a timed exclusive! A next gen console exclusive would be Street Fighter 5, or Titanfall (1). A year is on the more extreme end of timed exclusives, but there's no need to muddy the waters by talking about "almost exclusives" or whatever.
