Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Early 2016. PS4 Holiday 2016

Really? Its the reason I'm looking so forward to Horizon though. Based off the E3 footage it looks like Tomb Raider with dinomechs. That sounds fucking awesome.

Wait, what!?! RotTR is going to be a puzzle solving, climbing simulator while Horizon is going to ba a tactical action game with DINOSAURS that can shoot rockets at you. The demos we have seen of both games look nothing alike.

Y'all seem so salty. Msoft paid for the (in the public's eyes) 1 year deal. They will advertise it heavily, and in the end Squenix and Crystal Dynamics will win for this.

The bitter tears of Sony fans (who were hoping for a 6 month wait) won't help this game get to your console sooner, just get a PC or waiT. Or just hope the game sucks?

The previous game was one of my favorites of the year, so I can't wait to play it this November!

I do expect these money hat deals to sadly become the norm if this works for MsoSoft.

Well this isn't correct completely either. It does have tactical action(that looks great), but is a RPG!!!

I would be surprised if they get another deal with a franchise any where near this stature. Supposedly they offered up deals for lots of games, but SE was the only one to bite.

Microsoft are going to have to pony up vastly more cash each time though, since they're going to have to cover the sales of a platform with an increasingly larger install base. At some point it just won't be economically feasible.

Nope, but I'm definitely buying one for Persona 5. See, I can admit with zero hesitation that I clearly prefer the Xbox One as a platform, and would love nothing more than to see Persona 5 announced for it. But seeing as how that doesn't look like it will happen, I need a PS4 to play Persona 5.

I'm excited as hell about Uncharted 4 also, but Persona 5 has clearly overtaken it on my excitement meter. There's a reason I was nagging any and everybody associated with Microsoft and Xbox during my time in LA for E3 about getting more JRPGs on the Xbox One. If it weren't for those Sakaguchi JRPGs, I wouldn't even be such a humungous Halo fan right now. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey were my gateways to the xbox ecosystem, and as far as I'm concerned it's the primary aspect of the PS4 as a platform and its lineup that makes me most envious of people who already own one.
Why not just grab a ps3 for p5?

Edit: oh Uncharted lol

Install base differential is one thing, but the game tie in ratio is another. I would still think that Msoft has the money for these deals that Sony doesn't right now. But again I don't think they are good business practice. Put this extra money towards your first party games!

Better late then never, though, it will be a hard sell at full price a year after the Xbox versions, which by that time will be like, $20.

Makes me wonder if they will be 'game of the year' editions for the money, with added DLC or other ps4 centered enhancements.

A year is a long time. Are PS4 gamers going to buy a year old game at $60? People who have options won't wait a year for it.

I think it will probably impact sales, but I buy year old games (and much older) all the time. I buy maybe 5 new release games a year. So far this year day 1 I've bought Bloodborne, Splatoon... and that's it. Plenty of games I want to play (like Witcher 3, Batman etc) but unless I NEED it day 1, I'm fine with waiting for a sale.

I bet it's a 40 dollar ps4 game, b/c at this point PS4 will have some good holiday exclusive games launching. Hard to sell a year old game at 60 bucks even with a few DLC packs.

Now who's not making sense?
Earlier this week I was having a go at you for saying The Last of Us did nothing original.

Don't lie and put words in my mouth. I never said that and you know it. My post history will confirm it. Funny you mention "context" and yet ignored mine in that thread.

Xbox has some pretty cool looking games coming out in the near future. The system can be had pretty cheap these days. Why not jump in and play it when it releases on X1? Sure over time more games will come that appeal to some.its not like you are buying the console just for one game. Windows 10 is comiiiing hehe

Eh...

I think Square must be having Microsoft foot a sizable marketing bill. The game coming to near everything should make them a good ROI.

Huge 360 install base.

Good PC games sell for forever.

A reduced price and DLC packaged version on PS4 should incetivise purchases for single console owners. So the potential for good sales is there.

But then you have some really stupid moves that counter the above.

1. Why announce the ports this far out? People on the fence who might have broke and got the 360 or X1 versions can now sit back. Less double dips.

2. Holiday 2015: Same day as Fallout 4? That's stiff competition. And that game is going to have serious marketing behind it.

3. Waiting a year on the PS4 version just feels too long. You are going to launch in the teeth of the both Sony's and third parties' holiday 2016 lineup. For a game a year old.

The Tomb Raider reboot did but they are deemphasizing those aspects in RotTR and going back to more of the old formula of puzzle tombs and climbing obstacles. So yea, Horizon could be comparable to the old Tomb Raider but not the new one. One caveat here is that not a lot is known about either game. I am basing this off of what the devs have decided was important to show and say about both games so far.

Because some people on this forum can't play games on platforms who aren't the best graphical powerhouses. However this wasn't an issue when the PS3 was out against the 360. The parity clause! It's real! How dare we play the lesser port of the game!

Yes, but it's probably at the point already where whatever the money publishers would ask Microsoft for will probably be more than whatever money Microsoft would make out of the deal.
Plus it's an extremely short-sighted way of doing business. Square Enix might make an equivalent amount of money for RITTR from selling this exclusivity period to Microsoft as they would have made from releasing on all three platforms. However lower overall game sales will most likely lead to less people being interested in further sequels.

It's okay to admit what's happening here, because it's transparent as hell. If Sony had made the same deal, there wouldn't be anywhere near this kind of negativity around the reboot and its sequel.

I think you have a point here. There wouldn't be this kind of negativity because I doubt the majority of Xbox gamers care. Simply, there are more people on Playstation that care about this game then on Xbox.

I loved the reboot. Played it and beat on both PS3 and PS4. And I will play it on Xbox this fall because waiting a year sucks. But I have serious concerns that the game will tank given the window it is releasing in and not being on Playstation for a friggin' year.

I just hope SE hasn't hurt this franchise long term for some financial relief in the short term.

Unless the game is significantly discounted, or is superb in quality, I likely won't bother getting it for PS4. 2016 already looks fairly packed as it is. I didn't think MS would secure the exclusivity for a whole year, but then again, any earlier and it would probably end up running into Uncharted 4.

Tomb Raider has a name that will sell. It's an established franchised, and the new games are doing well too.

Here's hoping SE comes to their senses and release the PS4 version in summer 2016 instead of the holidays. No reason to go against the slew of other PS4 games releasing in Nov-Dec.

I don't see how Horizon is comparable to any Tomb Raider. Horizon is open-word, it is a RPG, it has economy, it has towns, it has lots of quests.

Ugh!! I would be really annoyed if Horizon was a shallow Tomb Raider/Far Cry type game.

Smh they need to hop on this big ole black xbox train.

I feel like it will do OK, but not nearly as good as some of the other games launching around it this holiday. It's even launching on the same day as Fallout 4.

It's going to have the same problem next holiday on the PS4, with the disadvantage of being a year old.

PC version might just hit the sweet spot when it comes to timing, though.

Pretty much this. This whole RoTTR drama has left a poor taste. I'll probably get it when it releases next year on PS4 because I really enjoyed the last TR game...but damn idk what SE has been thinking.
The only drama I see is the one from people up in arms about the whole deal. It's a known IP, a strategic deal, it was obvious from the start it wasn't fully exclusive.

It sucks that it's such a long exclusivity period. You'd think that MS' priority would be to tie up the holiday period and let it go to Sony after 6 months.

Presumably the PS4 will get the goty version with any and all dlc included.

what is shit?

Anyway, you guys fail to realize that there's just a lot more fans of the franchise that are probably gaming mostly on PS consoles? Everything is not a brand war, somethings are just the majority speaking. I say this because many will bring up SFV or FF7 as ppl upset or salty being hypocritical, but isn't the easier and more logical conclusion simply more ppl complained because more ppl have playstation?

Relax man...everyone should be celebrating.

I didn't lie, saying it was a lie is implying I deliberately mislead people.

If I have misconstrued what you said about the Last of Us, then I'll cop that.
But I would never deliberately take someone out of context just to get a small leg up in a debate.

So no, I didn't 'know it'.

And saying otherwise is really rather slanderous, since I have no history of doing anything like that.

Wait...Far Cry? Wouldn't Uncharted be a better analog? I see that comparison (and how UC eats TRs'lunch) all the time. It's ok to call UC shallow as hell, because it is. But man, it's the most impressive and fun shallow franchise around. Horizon looks to be nothing like either and I'm thrilled because of that.

Every time something pops up about this game it turns into a big deal. Thought folks was over it by now. Keep opening up the wounds the wounds. Shit like this never bothered me.

They don't have too, but they can't be mad that it's a year wait, when Msoft paid for the year advantage.

Wait, why can't they be mad? I'm not a huge TR fan in any case, so I don't really care - I probably just won't buy it. But I would say fans can certainly be mad. MS are paying to keep the game off of Sony's platforms for a year. If MS were to do that to a franchise I liked, I wouldn't be happy about it.

I used Far Cry because it is also open world, craft, rpg-lite and you hunt. Tomb Raider is hub semi-open world style, rpg-lite, some hunting. Uncharted wouldn't be a good comparison at all.

Tomb Raider has a name that will sell. It's an established franchised, and the new games are doing well too.

Yes, but anyone who didn't play it last gen and only has a PS4 is less likely to pick up the new game. I can't quantify how much of a difference that might make(it might be minute), but you can't make the argument that lower overall sales is a long term benefit for a videogame franchise.

I would much rather they lock up the franchise rather than do this 1 year thing.

This whole thing has been a major slap in the face for someone who bought three versions of the first game.

-First announcement - you get a Tomb Raider sequel!!
-Next year's announcement - but only for Xbox One!
- .... for a while
-Oh yeah, sure, it's a 'partnership'. Microsoft is helping us with... stuff. You know, this and that.
-What? You still want the game on your platform? Fine, you'll get it in a year...... you peasants.

It's business. This is why they do it. You either buy their console in that year, or you wait. What's the disadvantage to MSoft?

Well, I proudly shook his hand and took some pictures with him at E3. Maybe it rubbed off on me or something. ;) Ya, you guys need to realize how old that line of attack is right now. Not everybody that disagrees with you guys about things relating to xbox works for Microsoft or is slinging Microsoft PR.

It's okay to admit what's happening here, because it's transparent as hell. If Sony had made the same deal, there wouldn't be anywhere near this kind of negativity around the reboot and its sequel. People will tell me I'm wrong, but the rapid shift in tone speaks volumes from back during the definitive edition release on PS4 and Xbox One.

how was the hand shake though?

Square Enix might make an equivalent amount of money for RITTR from selling this exclusivity period to Microsoft as they would have made from releasing on all three platforms. Which is troubling because Square was doing a pretty good job of resuscitating the Tomb Raider franchise. Word of mouth and positive reviews gave the Tomb Raider reboot a long tail as people came back to the series. Now their initial release of the next game will be limited to just one console, and that console has about half the install base of the other. Plus I'm not sure how much Square saves on marketing with the NS deal since next holiday season they will have to fund their own marketing campaign anyway to have any hope of selling decently on the PS4.

Another gamble Square is taking is that RotTR had better be a great game because by the time the PS4 version comes out everyone will already know about any flaws the game has and it will mo longer be "the new thing". That's going to make it much easier for people to pass on the game and pick it up when the price drops or get it used.

I don't see how Horizon is comparable to any Tomb Raider. Horizon is open-word, it is a RPG, it has economy, it has towns, it has lots of quests.

I'm inclided to belive you. I was trying to be open minded to the opposing point. If you squint and hit yourself up side the head with a pipe you could say both games are man...err..woman vs nature with both fighting wildlife except that the wildlife in Horizons is mechanized.

Saying you lied just means you didn't tell the truth. Not sure how different cultures handle the definition but from what I know it just means to be untruthful. Also don't know/care which one of you is right, just trying to make sure I haven't been using the word wrong :P

Edit: shit, you may be right! Maybe I should look up a stiff definition.
