Final Fantasy XV 'Dawn' trailer

I'm beginning to worry this will turn out like FFXII, where the entire game seemed like a prelude of things to come and then ended. Suddenly we had a story where
a princess wanted to reclaim her kingdom and then she did.
With both Nomura and Nojima off of the project, does anyone actually want to tell this story anymore?

The mech/gun Final Fantasy games Chrono Trigger iirc have always had steampunk settings. The mage/swords Final Fantasy games are the medieval settings. Then we also have the futuristic Final Fantasy games most recent would be Lightning series. So far FFXV looks to be an amalgamation of all 3 themes and I'm pretty much weirded out.

I'm really not sure this has ever been true.

"Steampunk" seems to be something fans have attributed to FFVI, not FFVI itself. Unless I'm mistaken, FFVI implies everything (imperial) is powered by magic, within a newly industrialized world (hence the 19th century aesthetic).

I think it would have been better if they had just straight canceled FFVersus and terminated those assets, just made something else entirely new for FF15 with no hold overs from Versus.

I don't think Tabata by himself is bad, but warping what we've seen for 10 years into this unappealing mess isn't really playing to his own strengths or what fans want to see. It should not have been an obligation to funnel what was Versus into this title, it just made it a clusterfeck and it didn't need to be so

I agree.

are you kidding.. weve known these characters for 9 years.

Okay so yeah we dont KNOW know the characters at all... but for many people, this games has been anticipated for years and feel a connection to characters theyve seen over the years even in snippets of trailers and vague info.

sure I dont know the characters... but i know the kid is the main character in the trailer... I feel a connection to him because ive been wanting to play as him since 2006... i know his dad has a strong presence... and is loving and playful, as seen in the "soup eating scene" in an older trailer, and here we see him crying over his ignorant little boy. (i say ignorant like, as to what is going on in the current world. hes just resting on his dad grinning without a care.)

We dont need to know the characters to feel for them, the beauty of video games (and art) is that a simple image, or scene can absolutely invoke feeling without any other context.... thats art man!

oh dear

When Philippo is losing faith in FFXV, you know something went seriously wrong.

On a brighter note, at least there are some darker moments in the game at least. Wonder if child abuse will be a subject they tackle here.

Nope, i'll never surrender.
I STILL BELIEVE!

I'll be the captain of this worm-ridden ship!

You'll be the captain of the pessimists ship, and i the one of a 4ppl "Boat of Believers".

Well umm so the gif was the whole trailer. At least the music was good, also lol at preorder without a year even.

What an awkward emotional scene. The broken English made it even more awkward. That trailer was barely mediocre. I'm guessing it's the last time he's going to see his son or something?

Anyone else thinks they're focusing on the father/son relationship to appeal to their demographics? When VsXIII was first announced a lot of us were teenagers but now some of us have become fathers ourselves.

The worst part was the beginning. The blond girl (who I'm assuming is Luna?) looked like a doll, no emotions whatsoever.

...the fuck was that?

If only Square could remember what made the older Final Fantasy games fun. Then hire some actual decent writers while they're at it.

Why even bother showing nothing?
They still don't want to spoil too much of the story, which is somewhat refreshing for a Final Fantasy's marketing, although this is going a bit too much to the opposite extreme of them spoiling everything in FF trailers by showing too little. And do remember the ATR still exists. They could show some gameplay there that wouldn't have fit a more artsy trailer like this. TGS is also right around the corner, so it's not like we have to wait too long for the next time they'll show if they were serious this is the beginning of the marketing cycle for FFXV.

Yeah that's scrapped. The entire concept of "Stella" was taken out according to Tabata and replaced with "Luna".

Which is partly why i'm so sad :(
Luna still serves as a somewhat similar character as a princess of another country whose story is tied to Noctis, but the specifics have changed. Stella's original role as some kind of unwilling villain/rival who is somehow destined to fight Noctis seems like it could have become a bit too convoluted amongst the larger storyline. They want to make a more straightforward story than some of the more convoluted games in the series in the last decade and decided Stella simply didn't fit that aim. People complained about them planning a whole "Versus epic", so they condensed the story into one game and made it a bit simpler, which meant Stella's story didn't fit in.

This fantasy died the moment Nomura was gone.

XV gets less and less appealing to me the more I see of it.

I would definitely want to read a book about Versus 13/15's development if one ever got published, i'm sure you could fill a book with enough material.

To think a majority of the leads who were on the Versus 13 project moved over to the FF7 remake by this point(which might not even be done by SE in house if CC2 rumors are true).

Tai Yasue on KH with Nomura just a figurehead for that franchise, and now Tabata with 15...

I would pay big money for a book with all the original design materials/scripts.

This is still a game set in the same world, with the same characters (excl. Stella), the same premise and mostly the same larger storyline than what the game had when Nomura was still in charge. It's not a wholly different game that shares nothing with what Nomura worked on.

ATR better be more than great now. Enough with goddamn tease and contextless story trailers. I'll absolutely die of embarrassment for SE if all there is in the ATR is a thirty additional seconds of kid Noctis crying or something like that.

I'd pay big money for that as well......because even after waiting for over 10 years, the story of Noctis and Stella will never have an ending and that angers me greatly because the story from the earlier trailers captivated me so much.

Even just to see what could have been, maybe it'll turn up in a decade or so.

I think at this point based on what we have seen and heard, one would have to be very oblivious to think something like that.

Hmm, I didn't mind it. Basically went all in on trying to establish the more serious tone. We've got the road trip vibe, now they want to remind us the story is serious too.

Obviously not epic/exciting like some of the earlier story focused trailers, but it gave me a good sense of King Regis, who's mostly been a cypher before.

I get that many people had very specific expectations about getting a major story/location blowout, but (knowing SE) that will come closer to release when they spoil everything during marketing. And, of course, they may show us some new locations during ATB.

What I find somewhat galling about the reaction is the idea that Regis-holding-Noctis is somehow pretentious, over done, not believable.

I have a little guy about Noctis' age in that scene, so I'm probably extra susceptible, but I found it affecting and believable. The progression of Regis' emotion on his face as he considered his son's fate was very natural (and well paced - can see him fighting to hold back the tears), and Noctis' pushing his dad's scratchy face away was a great touch. No words, but that scene tells us a lot, about Regis' character (genuinely loving father, but very serious, clearly a warrior who's seen some shit and wanted a more peaceful life for his son, now realizes he's not going to get it) and about the gravity of Noctis' situation (his being chosen by the stars is clearly, in large part, a curse).

I get the dismissive lion king references, but this scene wasn't about father-son bonding right before dad bites it (that's going to come 15+ years later). It was about dad grappling with gravity of son's fate.

In brief, I found the trailer reassuring. They're still going to try and root the story in basic, believable human relationships and interactions, running the emotional gamut.

But still, seriously SE, release window!

"Mah god we have that wonderful scene that is so emotional, people will cry in front of such a natural and human beauty. I think it should be the whole trailer, just that, for 5 minutes!!"

Fire that man.

Now the music is wonderful!

I was disappointed by the lack of gameplay but as someone who finds FFXV's cast very off-putting it at least managed to make me care for Noctis a bit more.

I think that the hunger for gameplay footage/info is causing people to overlook the fact that it's a very nice scene.

That was a terrible trailer.

In fact, I like the design choices they made, but I fear the plot will be the same forced melodrama that a lot of JRPGs have.

Well I gotta say I liked it. Subtle, simple. Effective enough for me but I'm disappointed no date hahaha. I got ahead of myself imagining a suprise release hahaha. One can dream.

I won't deny that XV is based on Nomura's work, but at the very least I doubt that the removal of Stella didn't have enormous consequences for the game's storyline. They also killed the party scene that Nomura deemed important enough to be made in CG, which again implies that the scenario was altered in a significant way.

So yeah, I think it would have been better to just cancel Versus XIII and all of its assets instead of creating this mess.

I feel bad for anyone who didn't go to bed and waited for this trailer. Aside from Regis looking badass it was a waste of time.

Well that trailer probably has some stuff to dig through but they skipped e3 for that? How was that more substantial? I'm hoping that's not the only thing they show this week...

Why would they hype that up?

Also some people are overreacting lol. Wasn't bad it just wasn't anything really noteworthy.

I quite liked that, not much happened but I liked it.

They showed it before the ATR for a reason though, makes me wonder what will hapen during the ATR.

I love melodrama.

I just hope it's justified for legitimate reasons.

FFXIII was a case of "we got tattoos from god-robots and now we have tasks.. Isn't that super dramatic?" and I don't think it really justified the intensity of emotion in the dialogue and music.

If the reason for the tears in this XV trailer are "because crystals and gods?" then I will be sad.

"Steampunk" seems to be something fans have attributed to FFVI, not FFVI itself. Unless I'm mistaken, FFVI implies everything (imperial) is powered by magic, within a newly industrialized world (hence the 19th century aesthetic).

In contrast to the medieval settings featured in previous Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy VI is set in a steampunk environment. The structure of society parallels that of the latter half of the 19th century, with opera and the fine arts serving as recurring motifs throughout the game, and a level of technology comparable to that of the Second Industrial Revolution. Railroads and steamships are in use, and a coal mining operation is run in the northern town of Narshe. - Wiki source

Fans or not, the basis for the game is steampunk just as how the older Final Fantasy games carry the medieval aspect heavily.

Dawg's looking a lot better in FFXV! That's a mega skin shader they've got, wasn't so impressed by the milky tears though.
