Mafia 3 Reveal Trailer (Hangar 13/Take-Two, 2016, PC/PS4/XB1)

I'm excited for the change. It looks like melee weapons are in and that's already a plus. Hopefully the radio selection is as good as Mafia II's. Is it confirmed that the older guy is Vito? It'd be interesting if he took a kind of Michael from GTA V role with the game.

I'm also curious if the CE of Mafia 3 (if there will be one) will smell like cherries. Everyone thinks I'm crazy that the CE of Mafia II smelled like cherries till I open it up and give them a whiff.

Edit: Heard Vito in the IGN trailer. Groovy.

Graphics are looking nice and so the city.. everything else, really disappointing.. you can see that this one doesn't have the unique European (Czech) touch ..

I have only one request... JAZZ CLUBS!! Old school Jazz and Blues clubs with an announcer with a husky voice who goes, "Hey there, all you cool cats..." and the like.

Or was that more of a 40's thing? I know pool was very popular among the Black community in the Civil Rights Era, so that would be cool too

It's particularly surprising because, historically, the late sixties and early seventies is exactly when black organized crime families began sprouting, as they took the drug trade away from Italian families. This time period had an explosion of black organized crime families, including Nicky Barnes's The Council, and Frank Lucas's drug empire. You've got the Philly Black Mafia taking over in their area, and out on the west coast, you have the 69 Mob run by Felix Mitchell fighting with Funktown USA over control of the heroin market.

There are a ton of great organized crime stories that have never been told, in part because of people who have been confused into thinking the Italian families were somehow unique or special, largely due to how these figures have been mythologized by filmmakers.
Quality post, thank you.

Some of the "BLACK GUY IN A MAFIA GAME??" reactions in here have been completely knee jerk and pretty embarrassing honestly.

Hollywood archetypal wise guy Italians are not the only people to have done organized Mafia style crime, especially during this time period.

At first glance it seems like a game that started it's life in the previous gen of consoles. Still plenty of time to sharpen it up.

leaked script of the ending of the game:

protagonist: "god damn Vito that was intense. Now lets get down to business and dance this out at the club to some jazz"

Vito: "I... I.... can't.. relate"

*shoots protag in the head*

Some day we'll get a game about the rise of the Chinese Triads in America.
That will be epic or perhaps a game set in Shanghai that is NOT called Whore of the Orient

More like:

Lincoln: Yo Vito dawg! Let's chill at the club nigga! You and me brutha! WASSUP BOI !!
Vito: Fugetta bout it!

I had completely forgotten that 2KCzech is no more. Explains why some of the gameplay looks so different.

Jazz and I'd imagine jazz clubs was definitely still a thing in the 60's. One of the video interviews mentioned lots of jazz and rock in the soundtrack (heard Rolling Stones playing) so that's good.

I'm hoping that means radio stations. For some reason fake radio is one of my favourite things about modern open-world games lol.

Yeah, I mean this was the game where you got tickets for speeding. I hope they keep some of that realism.

Nah, now it looks like another GTA clone, which is the most disappointing part of all they've shown.

Really letting down the cool setting, imo.

Relating wasn't part of the deal....

I didn't see this coming but it's such a breath of fresh air. Everything about this game sans the gameplay is completely new to our hobby. Black crime families were huge but they weren't romanticized like the mob outside of the black community. Now we get a game depicting the one of the eras I've been hearing about all my life it's like a dream come true.

For those with no knowledge of the culture watch American Gangster with Denzel Washington. That's the most mainstream black crime family movie. There have been others like Hoodlum with Lawrence Fishburne (Morpheus from the Matrix) that's always been a favorite of mine as well. Outside of that you have to dig a little deeper and off the top of my head I'm drawing a blank but it's good to see the a developer tackle something new to the world of gaming

The black mafia should have its own separate but equal mafia game franchise.

The games will only be 3/5ths as long though.

I'm sorry
.

Ah ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha. Ha ha.

Yeah this is GTA:SA PT 2.

Unbelievable this shit is still like this. We haven't evolved at all

I'm only laughing so I don't fucking cry.

Anyway on the actual game it looks really interesting the setting looks interesting as fuck I'm really really down to play this game. It's always good to have you know little one offs that are similar to GTA but really bring a different take on the genre like sleeping dogs did.

Have they said already if this is an invented city like Lost Heaven and Empire Bay or just New Orleans?

I prefer if its invented based on New Orleans, like in the old games.
Having old Vito is pretty cool. Love that thre three games are going to be related even if they are their own stories. I suppose we will have a mission with Vito recounting what happened after the ending of Mafia 2, just like the Mafia 2 mission that expands the ending of Mafia 1. Also cool having a balck protagonist, liked his reveal trailer (and the music on it).

The screens are rough as hell though. Seems i need to boot again Mafia 2 and compare.

I LOVE MAH FAMILY

GO HOME BE A FAMILY MAN
Yeah, there's...for the attack on the jazz club I feel like I need more context to judge it really, but at face value, just walking up and repeatedly stabbing a guy in the face isn't exactly the ideal approach for establishing sympathy for a character. There's the sense that maybe that's a thing you can make Lincoln do solely because it's shocking or badass or whatever else boring reason. I hope this game is better than that.

And that's a general concern I have with this game so far. A sense of consistency. The car chase stuff is happy fun times with shit exploding and flipping around all over like some wacky cartoon shenanigans out of Saints Row or Just Cause. It looks weird when the story is dealing with all this serious stuff. Like, at one point Lincoln literally hits that big ass ramp. Also weird because the previous Mafia games were pretty particular about representing its cars (and traffic rules) realistically. This is like the opposite of what I expected to see after I heard the "physics-based driving" PR buzzword.

I'm also wondering what the structure will be like. Mafia 2 got criticized for not having enough stuff, which nowadays is kind of a daft complaint as we're growing weary of Ubisoft open worlds and Dragon Age checklists. I hope they've not reacted to the feedback in a way that makes the game too much along those lines. It'd be cool if they've found a way for the Mafia version of open world to remain its own thing.

Yeah, we'll see how this ultimately ends up. The era, setting and main character are really interesting at least. You don't see AAA games diving head first into these sorts of topics too often.

I'm currently playing Mafia 2 and it's a bad video game. And I'm alright with "negative space" in video games and I'm a fan of minimal stuff like Far Cry 2. But the way Mafia 2 did it was terrible. And the farther this game is away from that wet fart the better.

I think that we have to still wait for context and how the guy is in the final game.
But Tommy Angelo was awesome by being the everyday man that gets into bad shit and then having to cope with it.
The parts in the cafe with the cop, the beggining, the way he treats the friends inside the mafia, the garden ending...

Mafia 2 is unfinished and the empty space is a big problem, but it isnt a bad game or a wet fart in the slightlest.

If the main character is half-Italian, would it be interesting for him to rise up the ranks despite the amount of racism thrown his way by other members of the mafia?

That's something people don't want to see? Whatevs, but I find that way more interesting than reliving Godfather or Goodfellas again.

Gameplay though, I wish it was a bit more realistic.

Generally speaking both of your parents have to be full blooded for you to be considered eligible to join the mafia.

I always feel like Mafia would be a better series if they just did what they want to do without conceding to the whims of the market. It's hard to take criticism of the revealed portions because we have people complaining that's it's a GTA ripoff or not enough like GTA and too story focused. This is like Nintendo trying to figure out Zelda lol.

I think the story is intriguing and the setting fits with how Italian Mafia moved to new territory as time moved on. Mafia II had the Triads so it dealt with different organized crime factions. The game is still centered around the Mafia so people should have more of an open mind about who is a valid protagonist in this story.

Awful! Lol.

On topic though, I hope the introduce the black panthers and the housing project crimes that was a thing in New Orleans during those times.

My home town finally getting some love :)

Wait a gd-minute!!

I loved Mafia II
And my pre-hype love for Mafia III may be over 9000 right now.

Why can't we live in the dream?

Can't believe how good the world looks, some awesome visuals on show here.

Very excited for it.

However did anyone else feel the gun aiming was a little odd?

Looks more like modern GTA with a touch of Saints Row than anything. This isn't even made by the Mafia 1/2 devs right?

Pretty excited for this game now. I play video games partly to have new experiences, so the way they're mixing it up for this installment sounds fantastic to me. And it's set in the year of my birth, which is, naturally enough, the greatest year of all time. It'll also make the music wonderful. Seriously hoping for a jazz radio station.

This thread is bonkers. Mods could have a field day in here.

Seriously. So many "I'm not a racist, but..." posts it's unreal.

There are about 20 people from 2K Czech working on this, but the core leads are different, most 2K Czech people went to Warhorse.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed somewhat. I don't care for the location or the arcadey nature of the gameplay or lastly the non Italian american angle they are going for. Maybe I'm wrong, so Ill take a wait and see nature but so far I went from super excited from the announcement to "ehhhhhh I guess we'll see" today.

Setting looks great, characters are looking great as well.

Looks a bit action loaded with the first impressions, but we'll see about that.
Curious what kind of crimes are involved, as those changed a bit over the time.

Really hope the game will turn out well, because we still got so many interesting settings to explore.
The big wars through New York with the italian, irish and jewish mobs within the time frame of the prohibition.
The expanding territory on other buisness models like casinos, or just a modern setting ala Sopranos with more police involvement.

Another thing I'm really hoping for is a linear experience.
I wasn't a big fan of the "open world" in Mafia 2, allthough it was pretty linear.
Really enjoyed the parts on Mafia 1 without too much stuff on the side, just a great main storyline.

Same. No interest at all right now.

Hopefully the ridiculousness of the explosiveness and cars flying like that are toned down at some point. I'm really looking forward to the sound track/radio though just going by the rock they've already played in the trailer and previews.
