Resident Evil Revelations 2 Coming to PS Vita August 18th

So, apparently the game is out on Europe/Australia. An user on reddit posted a 30min gameplay. He complained about the framerate and compressed audio.

He said that there was no patch to download, so here's hoping that the 900mb patch that the reviewer said earlier will improve performance
I have a feeling it won't

Played up through the prison with Claire, so about forty minutes worth. Should be said that I've only played the PS4 version before, but some impressions.

-Textures are a very muddy now, some worse than others. Blood textures and decals look really bright now.
-Character models look pretty good, think a bit more effort was put into preserving these over the environment.
-Lighting has took a big hit, very flat and much brighter in general now. Kind of makes the item flashes for Moira harder to see imo.
-Framerate is all over the place, but it hasn't become unplayable for me (which I understand is fairly subjective), at a guess I'd say it was hovering around the mid 20's for the majority with some dips into the teens. The dips, so far, seem more to do with the environment you're in rather than enemy count.
-The sound is the area that seems to have taken the biggest hit, oddly enough. Sounds very dull and muffled, think it's been hit the hardest by a lot of compression which is disappointing.
-Control seems nice and responsive. Gyro aiming is in there, although I didn't try it. Seems like what was previously on R1/L1 and R3/L3 is now assigned to the touch screen, and thankfully they don't have icons for those on screen.

Framerate looks pretty bad in that video. Like low to mid 20s consistently.

I bought it and played the beginning. First thing I noticed:
The game is very bright and the ingame gamma setting is strange. Even on the lowest setting the "not visible" image is still visible. But at least the game looks better with gamma turned down.

turned down:

(the rest of the images are all with the lowest gamma setting)

Overall I'm ok with the graphics. It probably could have looked better but it's not completely bad (preferable view on the Vita screen).

Performance so far felt quite choppy. Not unplayable but not very pleasant. I didn't get the day 1 patch yet, so no idea if this fixes anything.
Gyroaiming is nice though :)

I'll say something I've been wanting to say since last week: Revelations 2 port is sloppy, but the result is what we've got because it was a downport from a game developed with other platforms in mind as well. I always felt like the Vita couldn't really handle a competent TPS, until I played Danganronpa Another Episode. That's a game built from the ground-up specifically for the Vita and it shows, everything is top-notch (graphics, controls, gameplay, audio). The Vita can handle these games and this genre just fine, but it's a shame that only a few developers bothered to release a game custom-made for the platform.

Wow. That's bad.

This was already proven at release with Unit 13, an incredibly underrated TPS on Vita.

Wow those loading times are not good. Not good at all. And that framerate is so terrible. Overall it looks awful.

Well.....shit. I had hopes for a good port. Footage looks horrible. Now I think if I really want to play this I'll just get the PS4 version and remote play it. Shame.

I don't know. Controls work fine and are nicely adjusted with the addition of gyro aiming and gameplay fits the Vita as well.
The issues with the port are mainly graphics and performance and I assume those could have been better if the port wasn't outsourced to a studio with no experience on the Vita.
The game has only very small and narrow areas with not exactly high end graphics. To me it didn't feel like it was designed to make much use of the stronger hardware of the other platforms that was not possible to adjust properly for the Vita. Some downgrades and maybe 30fps instead of 60 like on consoles but not what we got with this port.

I really hope the patch improves the performance. Still no download so far.

Thanks, I missed that. Probably still not the best studio to handle such a port.

Nah, it's certainly not the best amount of experience. Though, not many western studios do have the experience really. Double Eleven & Sanzaru are the only ones that spring to mind.

I don't know why Sony keeps on allowing messy ports on Vita. I'm almost certain that Revelations looked a lot cleaner and ran better on 3DS than this game runs on Vita. It's baffling.

Maybe Armature who did the MGS collection on Vita? But yeah, probably not easy to find a studio that can do it and is available at the time.
It's just disappointing to get such a port.

Is there a day one 900mb patch or not? People from EU are saying there isn't one.
Someone with a review copy from vitareviews was the source for the 900mb day 1 patch but so far no patch has been released.

I wish they chose RE HD remasters instead of this. It would have been glorious to play RE4 or RE2 remake on a handheld like Vita.

I'm going to buy this just to have a little hope that Capcom would also port that upcoming RE2 remake. (they won't)

Looks rough. Lighting/shadows almost non-existent and textures look muddy. I was expecting a bit more polish since the Vita is certainly capable of better. I think I'll still bite though, but maybe at a price drop :\

Isn't this port by Sony?

I'm assuming so. Could be someone else but they really need to get their shit together when it comes to farming out ports to developers and allowing them to be released in a terrible state. It's happened far too often over the recent years.

They don't give a fuck about the Vita.

Clearly, and its a shame.

Revelation was also a native game, where as Revelations 2 is a down port. Huge difference.

Yeah but I've seen ports that are done far better than this. They have no excuse. The Vita is capable of more if they actually put effort into the port. The game isn't even graphically impressive on current gen systems.

I haven't played any good PS3 to Vita port ever. Every single one of them have serious framerate and resolution issues, worst one being Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma Plus. Even some of PS2 hd classics run like shit on Vita.

SFxTekken works great because it was not a port, it was made ground-up for Vita using the miraculous MT Framework Mobile.

Yeah seems like most of the stuff that works well and is on mulriple platform was made for vita first. Which while disappointing to some, works out in the case of having a good portable game.

It doesn't look that bad, it's just that some elements have lower quality texture compared to others(like those hanging corpses in the first vita vs pc shot) and the sub native resolution.

What about uncharted, unit 13, edf and maybe others?

But even without them a tps is just a third person game with guns or a fps with a cam in a different position, technically a tps is nothing unique compared to other genres, the quality of a tps depends on the developers, it has nothing stopping vita from getting a good tps.

Who didn't see this coming. Cheap and dirty port overseen by sony's 3rd party team. Could have sworn this was 60fps on consoles. Huge downgrade.

Sly Cooper collection and Thieves in Time were ports and awesome one too.

It was, but obviously it wasn't going to be 60 fps on Vita. I think it's pretty impressive that they got the whole game on the Vita mostly intact! It's pretty cool. Reminds me of the RE1 to Game Boy Color port.

PlayStation All-Stars was great and the best example I can think of. Everything else has had notable concessions (which is understandable given the hardware, though).

None of these previews or impressions right now are reliable because it doesn't have the day one patch.Even so it gives me an idea of what I'm getting into and it doesn't sound so bad to be honest but I waited this long for this port so I'm probably still going to buy it. Just as long as it doesn't run worse than Borderlands 2 on PS Vita it should be OK.

It could have lower res textures and a lower resolution and still look great, what really hurts here is the massive drop in lighting. Game looks a lot flatter and less atmospheric as a result.

It reminds me very much of the old port of X-COM to iPad, back when the iPad had a very similar hardware makeup to Vita. The lighting was heavily stripped back, which meant the game looked a lot muddier (in a bad way) and flatter.

The other big problem is developers not rebuilding the game's interface and menu elements for the smaller screen. A lot of the time they are just scaled down from what would have usually have been designed for a 32"+ TV, and you end up with tiny text and small minimaps.

The Vita exclusives which are designed around the platform get this right, even those which do have cluttered interfaces, like Oreshika 2. Or Frozen Synapse Prime, which was completely rebuilt for Vita. On iOS, the game was originally iPad-only because the game's interface simply would be a good fit for a handheld's screen. Because the Vita's display has much smaller real estate, they remade the interface from the ground up for that device. Big thumbs up from me.

What made Rev 1 look so good on handheald IMO was the shader use, Revelations 2 lacks any kind of shader to enhance the textures that it looks like a mobile phone game from 2012, which is a bit upsetting.

Yeah, this looks far away from 30fps.

And with so many good games coming out in the near future for Vita there is no reason to compromise on this one. I wanted to play it badly but it just takes to many hits in to many areas. The sound is actually pretty friggin crappy sounding. The textures and everything look bad, AND the fps seems to suck. If the FPS was good I could deal with the other 2 but this just seems to fail all together.

My money will stay in my pocket till PW3 next week. Then Ultra Despair Girls after that.
