I actually know people who expressed dislike about boyega being a lead in this movie
personally, I hope finn and rey become the couple of the sequel trilogy

Did the original trilogy ever show Anakin Skywalker as a white guy, or is it something the prequels did? You could make the argument that the character is still white.

Yep.

Oh yeah, but it's low key racism, not this running to social media to tell the world how shitty you are. I guess people are learning.

Sigh. You don't need to explain these things. The Moral Of The Story there (and here) is that nobody (for non-zero but certainly negligible values of "nobody") actually cared about black Heimdahl. Almost all the energy there (and here) comes from the backlash. Just roll eyes and move on, don't engage such nonsense.

Correct.
But this fact doesn't stop plenty of people on GAF from claiming there was a "blacklash" over a black Heimdall.

People getting worked up over nothing.

Good, good. I sometimes can't tell with the racism. The whitewashing in american movies isn't helping.

Scrooged

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.
The Patriot AI was right after all.
"But in the current, digitized world, trivial information is accumulating every second, preserved in all its triteness. Never fading, always accessible. Rumors about petty issues, misinterpretations, slander... All this junk data preserved in an unfiltered state, growing at an alarming rate. It will only slow down social progress, reduce the rate of evolution."

This seems like a joke account, but undoubtedly there are people who will agree with this absurd shit. The main villain is a white guy, is that not good enough for them ;)

People are dumbasses. Shouldn't be a surprise unfortunately. I actually hope Rey ends up not in a relationship in the new trilogy, kind of like Luke didn't in the OG. Not that it matters because I have no idea about these characters.

I'm trying to figure out if any bigoted Trekkies lost their shit when Sisko attained GODHOOD now.

I mean, do these people not know that it was a BLACK man that voiced their beloved Darth Vader?

That happened before King Negro became president. A lot of white folks lost their damn minds so now every little change is a massive attack against whiteness.

I actually think we're getting a bit better. It may sound weird but I think the fact that these racist twitter idiots get so much hate and contra is actually a good thing. The majority thinks of these dudes as dumb racists and that's what they are. I'm pretty sure that this wouldn't be the case like 10 years before. Don't get me wrong though. Racism is still a serious problem (especially institutional racism) but I can't help feeling a bit happy with the way many people are reacting towards these racists. Maybe one day..

Deep space nine was actually a lurch to the right for star trek considering that capitalism and militarism were such major themes in it.

During SDCC fans were asking Abrams and Kennedy if there would be Asian characters in the upcoming movies.

Abrams said that they didn't write the characters with a particular race in mind but rather "make a a movie that looks like the world looks." Kennedy said that they would carry on this philosophy for the upcoming films.

I think they gave good answers.

There seemingly is a strong demand by some for ethnic representation and identification.

I think there is an important distinction to be made however. I've already seen people jump on the bandwagon and coming to wrong conclusions based on early assumptions.

It's not predominately "white people hate black people in film" but rather a growing frustration of self perceived-irrelevance.

I think some should consider this before going all Ku Klux Klan hunting(not that I'm bothered if they did) on some irritated folks.

It's actually kind of weird how few Asian characters there are in Star Wars in the first place since it's so heavily influenced by Buddhism and samurai. Maybe things would've been different if Lucas had gotten his first choice for Obi-Wan, Toshiro Mifune.

In regards to Star Trek, I don't really know much about the fandom since I'm only slightly-more-than-casually interested in the franchise, but it would be kind of odd if there were a lot of racist Trekkies since the original show was diverse from day 1.

Don't think so, I don't think such people would have been fans of Star Trek in general to begin with - Star Trek has had more black people in significant roles than a lot of other TV shows during its time with all the shows. The first interracial kiss on U.S TV even took place on TOS.

On the upside of the boycott at least you won't have to share a cinema with these imbeciles.

Three people, three trolls start a whole backlash. I'd be laughing if it wasn't so sad. People are so willing to believe that most people are this openly racist that they buy this crap hook line and sinker. Are there people in the world who are pissed that there is a black lead in the new Star Wars? Well, we have 6 billion people, so I suppose there are. Are they around in numbers that matter, and do they have any sort of cultural cache to matter? Nope. Not at all.

The thing is, people don't apply critical thinking when they hear an absurd headline. The very idea that there was a decently sized group of fans who NOW of all times decided to boycott Star Wars because of a black guy is so patently absurd on its face that I knew it had to be a joke. And lo and behold it was.

The worst part of this is, this is going to become an urban legend of the internet, much like the outrage over Heimdall, essentially untrue, but accepted as fact anyway.

Edit: also I am gonna wait out until at least the first theater related shooting before I go see this. I know it's a scummy thing to say but such is that sad state of our country.

Wait what? You know that the odds of getting caught up in a random public mass shooting are ridiculously small right? Like odds of winning the lottery small.

Error

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
Some people are just pathetic.

Boyega looks like someone with charisma, he is gonna be a huge upgrade over the prequel dude who was one of the worst actors I've ever seen.

but you couldn't see his face! so it was as if there were no blacks in SW at all

minus Lando, who of course was the backstabbing negro at first. These guys musta been all "Gee, toldja that skin colour couldn't be trusted, Orville "

These guys live vicariously through the heroes, and they can't imagine themselves fighting on Tatooine or practicing somersaults on Dagobah as a woman, much less a black thug! Won't you think of these fans?!?!

You know, that's a great point. I don't remember anybody complaining about Sisko. Things have changed for the worse since then.

Dunno about that. There seems to be a very clear strain of thought that suggests black people getting any major role in film/tv or placement in anything else is some form of affirmative action or "forced diversity." As if black people can't possibly earn a role (or a reward, or an election for that matter), it must have been given to them.

Ultimately the problem also boils down to roles and stories. White people have been the dominant factor in film/tv roles and stories since the very beginning of film. They still are overall today. However we're also seeing an emergence of roles and stories aimed at minorities. Instead of viewing this as natural, certain white people pretend like this is some never before seen phenomena. As if everything was fine and fair until people started writing main roles and major stories for black people. Because they view white as the status quo, and thus not an issue of race ("of course the character is white, most people are!").

I'm glad things are more diverse today. And while I find some people's definition of diversity/criticism of the lack of diversity to be asinine (see: True Detective S1) overall I think good work is being done. From what I've read, Abrams didn't go into this film thinking "I want a non-white guy to be the main character." A lot of great actors auditioned...and he happened to choose a black one. If it had been a white male I'm sure there would be some idiots writing think pieces about Why Star Wars' Lack Of Diversity Is Troubling...but surely we can ignore the stupidity of that shit like we can (or should) ignore the stupidity of this small hashtag.

To be fair I just searched the tag on twitter and all I could find were people expressing amazement that this is even a thing.
