The full text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) has been released

Just realized that if this thing is ratified, it would go down in textbooks as being a fucked up horrid thing in a few years.

Seriously, that should be the standard for trade deals at this point. "Would history see this as being fucked up bullshit?"

Well, there is some hope. Orin Hatch, a Republican who leads the commitee on this acts like there's trouble passing this.

Also, the final big concern with Canada is the dairy issue. Paul Ryan (Wisconsin representative) and Canada I don't think were entirely pleased with the resolution. With Ryan as Speaker, he may torpedo this thing.

It there's no short term gain, it is a wasteful investment.

This is the conditioning of fucking stupid people chasing money, as if it's wealth.

This has some merit. This data protection is for preventing biosimilars from using the original data from first to market biologic drug to accelerate their own roll out.

Because biosimilars do not exactly imitate the originals, patents are less effective. This is why they are protected by data exclusivity, which prevents generic companies from relying on data published by the original drug company in scientific journals. The long development timeline - often more than a decade - means the patents also often only have a short period to run once a drug is finally approved.

Their saftey protocols get overruled.

You've heard of sci fi stories where Corporations own more power than governments right? This is basically very nearly the start.

We've known for a while already that Corporations under this will basically be immune from any governmental oversight or penalties, even under a catastrophic accident on state owned shores.

Like any litigation from the BP oil spill for example can actually be overruled by a higher court(higher than the government of the country in which the incident occurred. They can bring their lawyers to, hence BP has no obligations toward the coast or anyone else, even if they directly cause the incident due to their own neglect. Do you know anything else you can call that?
 
Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch said on Thursday the final text had revealed details about the deal that were worse than expected.

"Apparently, the TPP's proponents resorted to such extreme secrecy during negotiations because the text shows that the TPP would offshore more American jobs, lower our wages, flood us with unsafe imported food and expose our laws to attack in foreign tribunals," the organisation's director Lori Wallach said.

as a trade agreement, this doesn't give any gain for governments whether its short term or long term. This is just a bad deal. I mean, its a conglomerate and mass corporate wet dream, but fuck....

Edit: totally forgot that this was posted on the gaming side. While the IP rights stuff is alarming and does have a huge tangential affect on games, this should be in the off-topic section.
 
The whole thing is baffling. I don't know what "for the greater good" mindset Obama has when it comes to the TPP, but I'm just not seeing it. "For the greater good" can't be used to push through all this other shit at the same time.

He just became speaker. If the majority of his caucus wants this thing, it won't look good for him to go against it as pretty much the first thing he does as speaker. Hell, that was Bohner's problem.

Yea, I'm afraid maybe it'll be a dog and pony show. But the Freedom Caucus hates this shit, and they were the reason for Boehner's removal. For once the Tea Party are our friends. And we need to hammer the other representatives to tell them "NO."

The biosimilars are apparently going to get a special 8 years protection from time on market.

We're just now on the verge of viral delivery of gene therapy, the provisions of TPP will ensure that delivering certain types of revolutionary cancer treatments will be protected for a minimum of 8 years, also ensuring that the poor who can't afford such treatments will die in the meantime.

Good thing I work in the design industry then. I don't think they'll teach robots how to come up with a creative ad campaign, write interesting copy for it and photoshop eye-catching imagery anytime soon.

Ad campaigns don't mean much when there is no one to advertise to, because no one has any money to buy anything (including a method to experience the ads in the first place), because nobody has a job because they are automated.

I didn't say ads. But written copy? That's been established for a few years, now.

If machines can compose music autonomously, to believe that they cannot do what you do eventually seems childish. It is not so today, but the future is left a question mark. This runs on the assumption that there's something special about the human species, which cannot be replicated. I would argue only narcissists can genuinely believe this.

But that's only one issue with jobs. Assuming yours is not automated, you will be at risk for some of what the TPP may allow, and especially be effected in an economy where the have not class is 25% of the unemployed population. And that's a fucking easy target to hit..

You will fall directly, or fall collectively. Pick one. This century for people will be a race to the bottom caused by factors from the top. A social avalanche, if you will.

Automation is going to cut out a lot of jobs from the design field. Tools are going to keep improving and you will need fewer people. Also, more people will be capable of making their own fixed designs that are idiot-proof. If you use a squarespace logo-creator it's hard to fuck that up even if you are not good.
Thirdly, everyone has access to high quality software, be it of editing, production or what not. 15 years ago you could make a living if you were good at photoshop. Even if you could nothing else, your ability to know just that thing would yield you a good wage. Those times are over, and so will they be moreso in the race to the bottom.

Just check the design reddits for endless whining of people being angry over all the people in India who will design your website for 5 dollars.

The U.S. wants India to back off a policy that would require local sourcing for solar energy technology, and has sought World Trade Organization enforcement action. Representatives from the two nations reportedly met last week to try to settle the trade battle over India's rapidly developing solar industry, but reached no resolution.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said in February that India's rules for locally made products for its solar power program "discriminate against U.S. exports" and break WTO rules. "We are determined to stand up for U.S. workers and businesses," he said.

The EU is being addressed in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

This is the companion trade agreement to the TPP and covers the US + EU nations.

The TTIP is not expected to be finalized until 2016. If the TPP manages to get ratified by the 12 signatory nations, it's safe to assume the TTIP will be next on the corporate agenda.

Citizens of the EU should probably get geared up to oppose their version of TPP as it's coming next year.

So uh, good luck with preservation of old games which have been abandoned by the original publisher. It will become a criminal act to hold and distribute even abandoned old games so long as they remain under copyright and the original holder of copyright can declare cease-and-desist or sue to prevent old IP they aren't even distributing themselves from being distributed by someone else.

Wasn't there something posted a week or 2 ago making it legal to circumvent DRM as long as the official servers are no longer operational?

TPP contains mostly similar language to DMCA but lacks the language for exemptions granted by DMCA. TPP would supersede any previous clauses of DMCA which contradict it. The provisions of the TPP would take priority over the laws of sovereign nations.

Corporations hated that there were exemptions, such as letting you jailbreak your iPhone which is another notable exemption. That will go away if TPP is ratified, in essence it will become a criminal activity to bypass DRM and jailbreak your iPhone or root your Android or whatever.
 
As stated before, the best way to deal with this is to tell your friends, family, co-workers and politicians to fight this.

Too much is being given up for there to be any security, he's letting foreign corporations cherry pick through every facet of US working industry, in return they will lie and screw over the US as a big thank you.

There has been fairly much of trying to get publicity on the issues of TTIP in Europe already.

Sadly though, the larger media hasn't really picked up on it.
 
The fight against these is probably going to play out like previous fights, right now it is the early stages, mostly grassroots stuff and the mainstream media will ignore things until enough noise is made.

I find it funny that many of his allies have been telling him, publicly, not to sign this thing for at least a year because it'd hurt the US in pretty much every way imaginable.
 
I mean seriously wtf. Its like they dreamed up the worst kind of terrible laws and challenged each other to trump their dispicable rules.

Why the fuck is Obama agreeing to sign this and why is there less publicc outrage?
