Rise of the Tomb Raider - Review Thread

Damn, I was about to get really interested in this game and the 2013 game but hearing this and the Eurogamer review is really sobering.

Guess you'll just have to settle for the other shoddily-written AAA shooter packed with collectibles and RPG elements that comes out tomorrow.

then is rotr really a system seller?

It'll be a system seller for some people... but not most people. If any game were a system seller for most people, it'd win the console war on its own (think Wii Sports).

The term system seller is honestly a little silly. How many systems should a game sell to qualify? I bought an OG Xbox specifically to play Jet Set Radio Future (turned out to be shit unfortunately). System seller?

It'd be pretty easy to argue that nobody other than Nintendo's ever had a system seller.

Gonna pick this up tomorrow, hopefully beat it by Friday, and then trade it in towards Fallout 4. I'm not going to rush, looking forward to playing through it. I enjoyed TR13 a lot so I'm sure I'll dig this.

God damn it, why did you guys make me read that Eurogamer review. All the story complaints, including the overly breathy performance by Camilla were some of my biggest problems with the first one.

Someone please tell me they toned down the shaky cam a lot. It was outrageous in the first, giving a lot of players headaches and nausea, becoming the number one complaint among fans (by far in polls on their own forums) that they never patched. I didn't see why they thought tech problems were of greater concern than the fact their game was literally making people who genuinely wanted to enjoy it instead want to vomit, but that it was never patched made me worried for this one.

I'd watch a let's play, but that is inherently spoilers in linear games like this.

Better than I expected, tbh. Sounds like CD really did their homework building on the previous game while addressing some of its shortcomings. As I'm on PS4 I won't get to play this until next year but sounds like I'm in for a treat when I do. Good stuff!

Going to pick this up instead of Fallout i think. Lucky the DF article came today for Fallout and this got some great reviews.
Or maybe this game is bad framedrops also. Then i am screwed. :P
But i doubt it.

I'm a super huge Tomb Raider fan - been playing it since Lara first appeared on the PC in those strangely shaped PC boxes these came in.

I'm actually more excited to play this then Fallout 4!

Sounds like the game doesn't disappoint.

Liked the first one quite a bit and will probably pick this up tomorrow along with Fallout.

Are other games stories and character motivations/nuances as scrutinized as this game?

Did you forget Halo CE?

I loved the first one so I can't wait to pick this up!

Looking good. I enjoyed the 2013 game well enough. No xbox though so I will probably get it on PC or PS4 sometime in the next year or two

The game is going to bomb so hard as a single platform release on a smaller user base and with tough competition alongside it. I hope Square Enix got a good deal out of it, because the IP is going to take a hit from lower sales and less mindshare. Momentum isn't going to be the same come spring or December.

I wouldn't mind if this meant that they made it more like the old games but I don't have any hopes of it at all. Dumb murder simulators apparently sell and are reviewed well without much criticism, so I guess that's that.

After hearing so many good impressions about this game recently, I put an order in yesterday. I was going to wait for the PC version, but I think I'll do what I normally do and play it on console and get it again for PC when it goes on sale.

It's great that it's getting so many good reviews, gonna have a hard time playing this with Fallout 4 in the back of my head though, as that Pip-boy thingy's coming tomorrow, too.

Nice to see that this is getting great reviews. Loved the reboot, so I'm definitely looking forward to picking this up after Fallout.

based on this thread (if gaf is any way reflective of how the market will react), not as much as I thought.

How many people are in the situation that they aren't already saturated with enough other games to patiently wait until next year to pick up the title for a system they already own?

Even with all the delays to 2016 I find myself staring at my stack of games and asking "how?", and that's before I throw Fallout 4 on the pile.

Reading that Eurogamer review, I could practically feel the writer tipping his fedora as he gleefully skimmed the review he wrote. It's like one step-away from falling into "no soul" arguments, haha.

I don't know buddy. I'm just saying I hear a lot more people saying they won't buy xbone for this game rather than will.
Don't take what people write on internet so serious.

Just picked up a random post in the game OT

Just booted it now, based Singapore. I am so hyped. :)

Same poster way back when PC version got announced:
Sooooo happy. I'll pick it up on PC then, I was planning on buying it used on XB1 until the PS4 version came out but this is much better!

Well, it has issues as well but NOTHING like Fallout. It's much more polished and beautiful.

You literally just described Nathan Drake while describing Indy. They are essentially the same.

Also. Getting this game! So excited. Not a huge fan of the OG one because of how dark color wise it was but this one looks good. Is it only in Syria (for a short section) and Siberia? Or is there another locale like Egypt or something?

They're not though. Drake is a thousand more mellow than Indy. And a thousand times more the killer.
Drake's silly humor and emotional reactions to 'evil' are not present in Indy. Whereas, Indy's cold cruelty of basically executing a guy who brought a sword to a gun fight, never really presents itself in Nathan Drake.... not in a cutscene anyway.

Skimmed some of the reviews and am liking the sound of it. Seems like they at least improved the tomb aspect which is a plus. Honestly just sounds like a better sequel all-around. Can't wait to dive in tomorrow.

is that really true?

I have to say, I thought this was going to tank when it came to reviews because of the footage that had been shown. It just didn't grab me. I'm happy and surprised.

I found the first very average in fights but I did enjoy the actual exploration and the couple tombs.

Is this one less shooting and more exploring and are there more actual tombs?

Eurogamer touches on this:

Sigh... Still seems like a solid game. Will buy when it's out on PC.

He said: Ugh. The better this reviews the wor.......

I have to agree with him, this shitty marketing deal giving it a full year of exclusivity could bury the series when it inevitably doesn't sell enough for Square Enix.

The first game only made bank with the definitive edition and that is across PS3, PS4, 360, XO and PC.

Will PS4 owners outside of fans of the series really care about a game that came out a year ago on a rival console?

I will never understand this logic. So a PS4 customer will walk into GameStop, look at Tomb Raider New release on PS4 with excellent 9+ reviews, the clerk tells him how great the game is, that he beat it more than once, and as he's about to check out the copy, he says wait a minute, how could you have beat this game if it just released today? and when the clerk reveals that he played it a year ago on Xbox One, he goes Yuck, I feel dirty now, return his crap to the shelf immediately! Unless you think this is the MO of anyone outside of Tomb Raider fans, then I don't get it, especially when the game will likely see some improvements.
