This game is giving me a pretty bad first impression. It is almost embarrassing coming from New Vegas.

Dont expect basically much if you hold fnv in high regard. I mean I have only done so much ( lvl 20 now ) but the mechanics arent as good as in fnv. At least the skill, dialogue system isnt.

as someone who played two weeks of new vegas as an appetizer prior to this coming out i'm not sure how you can feel that way

i would rather drag my man bits through miles of broken glass than go back to NV at this point in time

Enjoying my playthrough so far, sanctuary is a fortress, diamond city is ok, weapons so far are really naff, and I'm struggling to build up any decent supply of caps.

I see some items on a trader with stars next to them with awesome stats, but they're like 15k caps.

Not sure I'll ever get that much cash in game.

Dont go to Diamond City without ammo bro. For sure if it is your first time going there. There is a trader at a small diner near the red rocket.

I also cheated a bit by using the money cheat and get some shipments of screws and adhesive.. so good

I don't think I ran into many enemies on my way there, certainly nothing that I couldn't just dispose with ye old stabbin' knife.

New Vegas's actual gameplay is a dumpster fire compared to this.

So how exactly does this work again?

First, the basics. To bring up V.A.T.S. you just hit the LB button on Xbox, L1 on PS4, and Q on PC. This will slow down time, but not pause it completely. You’ll then see your enemies in front of you, with the system automatically focusing in on the closest one. From here you must choose which enemy you want to hit or fire at, and what part of their body to go for.

Percentages are displayed near each body part. These show the likelihood that you’ll actually hit it with your shot. By highlighting your target and selecting it, which can be done with the left analog stick and A/X, or clicking on it on PC, you will queue that up for one shot. This will drain your Action Points, or AP, by a select amount, so you can follow up with extra shots if you have more.

The key here is to weigh the percentage chance of hitting with the damage it will do. On the top of the screen you will see how much damage the shot will do if it lands
, so if it will kill the enemy in one hit, and you have a 50% chance of making it, just queue it up twice and you’re good to go. Of course, going for the head will yield the most damage, but it will also drop your chances of hitting unless you have a high Perception and some accuracy perks. Figure out what is the best combo for the enemy and go with that, or you can try to disable them.

Does this require a perk? Because there's no such readout in VATS for me. I normally just shoot at whatever I have the highest chance to hit.

Found a .44 pistol, modded it out nicely. But now I do not have any ammo and I'm making my way to Diamond City, how screwed am I?
On the way, hook up with the
Brotherhood of Steel via the "switch to Military radio frequency quest" and you can hit up their base which is a police station and get a fair pile of ammo, even if you don't want to actually set out to do their first quest.

Yes there is- watchthe health bar of the target as you switch between different body parts

Agreed. Everyone here gets picky on the few things NV does better than F4 but no one talks about the hundreds of things this does better over NV.

Thank you sir for addressing this.

That depends. if you are talking about the dialogue system, the blank slate aspect, factions and rep, the skill system and possibly even the main story writing Fallout NV seems better in mostly every way to me personally.

The actual exploration, looting and killing, and gunplay are far above FNV.

But in this game there are so many weird and alienating design choices that dont make a whole lot of sense to me. The voiced protag is bad also. And why cant I chuck grenades in VATS?

Just look at the enemies health bar at the top. You will see a part of it flickering indicating the expected damage if the shot hits.

are the settlement related quests that Preston gives infinite? I'm trying to finish them before moving onto other quests but it seems like every time I talk to him he has another for me (I've done 30+ at least by now) and they're all relatively generic 'go kill raiders or ghouls' so it makes me suspect they're randomly generated

yep, i love it

I got one of those along with a combat shotgun before calling it quits for the night. Can't wait to get home from work and try them out.

Also can't wait to rank up a few more times to get the next level of gun nut. Some of those mods look awesome.

The combat shotgun is really great, I'm not a very big fan of the twin barrel in this game, because the reload speed is a bit too slow considering how easy it is to get totally swarmed.

I modded my combat rifle to be short light barreled with a heavy damage receiver and it feels like a real monster, it's chunky and strong so between that and my trusty laser rifle I have the two main damage types covered for most situations. The funny thing is it's the first weapon I found that uses .45 ammo that I actually like using so I've got like 600 rounds saved up.

OK. I just ran I to something called a bloodbug and noped right out of there.

The way the legs swing when it flies around. Nah. Not saying I'm scared, but nah.

How can you talk about main story? Are you even halfway through F4? Do you even know if you are halfway through F4?

Also, I'm not sure I prefer the old skill system. In the rest I agree with you with the dialogue system being the only system that I feel its clearly better on previous installments.

Yeah they are radiant quests

To progress with their story-line you basically have to start doing the main quest, like the quests with Valentine from Diamond City

For being 25 hours in, I have barely left the top left corner of the map. I have a question regarding ammo. Where can I purchase ammo in the near future? Preferably 10mm and rifle ammo.

I've been very impressed with the ambient dialogue in this game. Taking Piper and Nick around a lot, especially Piper, has surprised me a ton with how much unique and situational dialogue they have.

While the main conversation system isn't exactly the deepest. I don't hate it for what it is, but I do miss the depth of options in previous games, but you can definitely tell where a lot of those 111k lines of dialogue went to when keeping a companion with you through all sorts of locations.

The amount of times I've been exploring a location and saw something interesting to then have Piper or Nick comment on it has been crazy high. It's a fantastic addition.

I mean I think you can mod weapons to be shotgun like? I think plasma scattergun or whatever for example.
But that is laser shit, I want ballistic. No way im going to get the Science perk. Seems I need to find a legendary shotgun with the 'shoots an additional projectile' modifier, since that simply doubles the damage without needing more ammo. Found a rifle with that and made that into a sniper rifle. It kicks ass so much, in particular with ninja, better crits and critical Banker.

From what I have played so far these are my impressions. I dont know how far I am into the main story. But I have already ( story mission spoiler )
killed Kellogs and I did the mission after that.
.

But Im not saying this game is bad, I really enjoy it.

What about repairing your weapons? I still liked that mechanic. The new building stuff is cool too

head to Diamond City if you haven't already. Vendors restock after 24 hours as well.

Dark Souls 2 anyone? :D
I had one rad storm hit me as I was exploring and that was affecting enough, but on the way to Diamond City I actually felt myself walking into one- incredibly cool, and made it clear the engine "localizes" the storm geographically (i.e. it's not just a "radstorm.active=1" flag). Already ridiculously irradiated from helping some jerk close up some underwater valves, I didn't want to trifle with it so I looked around and found an abandoned house. Ran inside and found a couch. Took a 4 hour nap (it was 5am in-game) and woke up to a clear blue sky. Top notch I say.

Yup, if you fast travel away from a storm it can happen too - blue sky. Fast travel back - storm hits you again. Nice detail :) Best thing to do is just chill out on a chair and let time pass when you do not want to get radiated :D

Another nice detail are the moon phases, this adds SO MUCH authenticy to the world for me.

Wondering this too. Trying to power some stuff in my Diamond City house.

What are you trying to light?

Some light sources are radius based so they have to be near a power generator. You can use Power Pylons around the house that you can connect to your power generator and light sources that will give things power, another option is attaching a wire from the power generator directly to the light source.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

How do you hook up power to houses? Is there something special I need?

There's an item - I forget what it's called - in the power section that you can attach to the wall of your house, then run a wire from a generator to it.

That's how I powered my lights and devices anyway. I may be doing it inconveniently.

Edit: looks like I'm doing it inconveniently.

Did anyone else find the mascot head? I wish it came with some kind of perk like the rest of the unique equipment, but I'm still wearing it out of the sheer fucking terror it must cause in my enemies (and the backstory behind it is pretty cool).

I have no idea how to spend my perk points, ugh. Just too indecisive.

I'm having a hard time figuring out my starting points. I keep remaking my character and changing my spec. Would love some help on this. Think what I've read online is high charisma, and enough perception and intelligence to get the lockpicking and hacking perks.

Hey guys I hear Tinker Tom in a specific faction I won't specify can upgrade outfits. Thing is I'm there and I only see an option to barter.

Anyone know how to see the upgrades he can give outfits? I'd love to be able to wear the drifter outfit but it has no defense and if it at least had around the same charisma as my suit combo I'd consider but it doesn't.

The generational leap accounts for a good chunk of Bethesda's evolved gameplay/crafting systems.

The dialogue system (and to some extent, story, though I've liked 4's sidequests much better than 3's - haven't progressed far into the main quest) are much more debatable. If nothing else, I wish having more situations where perks (especially skill-related ones) came into play as part of the dialogue system, rather than having it solely be based on charisma and 1/2 perks associated with dialogue specifically.

I've been very impressed with the ambient dialogue in this game. Taking Piper and Nick around a lot, especially Piper, has surprised me a ton with how much unique and situational dialogue they have.

This stuck out to me too. Companions are a huge step up here compared to 3.

How do you hook up power to houses? Is there something special I need?

You either need generators and wires, or a wire to a 'conduit', which applies a 'power radius' to smaller objects.

If a workshop design has 'power needed' but no #, you can use a conduit. If it has a specific # attached to it, it needs power from a generator+wire.

if it's just light, you need to have a power pylon that's connected to a generator in the near of the light sources.

That's the problem - I don't think there is a way to make a generator inside the house?
