The in game help menu says that if you hightlight a settler in workshop mode, it will show their assigned task. Is this simply not implemented yet? Because I'm not seeing any indicator for what a settler (that was assigned) is supposed to be doing.

For people going "lol realism" why don't you go play the Witcher 3 if you want to see a game that has a fantasy setting yet still manages to construct a believable world. Hell, Skyrim is more believable than post-nuclear Boston in Fallout 4!

Well, to be fair, CD Projekt also struggles with their world building in some aspects. Not the same kind of anachronistic faults, but definitely several immersion killing ones. If you look at The Witcher 3 for example:

1. The biggest flaw is the same as in the two other games in the series, there are always tons with monsters, just outside every single settlement. In Velen there are drowners and ghouls pretty much everywhere, and in the Skellinge Islands there are so many flying monsters that you wonder how any there actually dares to take their boats anywhere. How anyone survives is that world is a miracle.
2. And when you move away from the settlements, you can still find people going around with their daily tasks in the most awful enviroments.
3. They use the same kind of weird set pieces as the Mass Effect ones, where people stand and say the exact same things throughout the whole game. It's pretty weird to see people standing in the same queues for 70h of gametime.
4. They don't fix/reset scenes after some quests, so you have things like a woman crying over her murdered mother for half the game, without moving the corpse in the room next to her during that.

It of course doesn't excuse the weird "200 years after the war" problem in this game, but let's not pretend that other developers in the genre aren't guilty of the similiar faults of immersion killing mistakes/flaws/misses.

(And I still think both The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 are great games, especially The Witcher 3, my GOTY so far).

Restarted and dumped all my points into perception/agility/luck. My character is a crazy good in combat now and a ton of fun. I tried a balanced build at first but I should have stuck with my gut instinct and focused on Luck.

Where can I find a cosmetic surgeon?

In Diamond City, I did an early quest and
ended up killing the crazy doctor
in the basement. Did I fuck up?

wait why are we pretending only Fallout 4 is set 200 years after the war?

Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, 116 years after the setting of Fallout, 36 years after the setting of Fallout 2 and 200 years after the nuclear apocalypse that devastated the game's world, in a future where international conflicts between the United States and China culminated in a Sino-American war in 2077, due to the scarcity of petroleum reserves that ran the economies of both countries

Fallout: New Vegas takes place during the year 2281, four years after the events of Fallout 3, and 204 years after the Great War of 2077. The former city of Las Vegas (now called "New Vegas") and its surroundings are divided among various factions, but there are three major powers competing for control of the region: The New California Republic (NCR), Caesar's Legion, and Mr. House.

or are we condemning the Fallout Bathesdaverse in general?

I think I am doing something wrong, or several things wrong at the same time. I'm level 8 and everything in this world kills me effortlessly. Want to go do some quest? BAM a bunch of
supermutants
pile up on me in 2 seconds flat. I say "well, maybe I wasn't really supposed to tackle this one this early maybe?" Let's try a simpler quest instead. Walk a bit towards my destination and DONG get butthumped by a bunch of radscorpions. Perhaps putting all of the points in charisma wasn't as good a choice as it was in New Vegas.

Charisma pays off later. Right now you need to find a decent weapon. If you go to
vault 88 just left of diamond city
and go do the couple quests there you will be able to purchase the
overseers guardian

This gun changed everything for me.

Interesting. FO4 takes place in 2287, so I don't see what the big problem is here either.

Soooo settlement building is total shit, right? I finally attempted to build up Sunshine Tidings co-op and a boathouse and the interface and controls for building things is some of the worst I've ever seen in any game. That's not even hyperbole, only certain objects snap to eachother and if they do, you can't pivot them for precision. The uneven ground of the entire world means that certain fences and buildings are just awkwardly floating about 6 ft off the ground.

Why do I keep hearing people speak such praise about this? Its easily the weakest part of the game so far, which says a lot because the vague dialogue system is also hilariously bad in a Mass Effect 1 sort of way.

On a brighter note: I'm really digging the more dense world and the gunplay. They're actually a bigger improvement than almost anything else in the game. But man did I want the settlement stuff to be good, I'm a huge sucker for base building in games but this is just unbelievable trash.

People condemn Bethesda's Fallout largely due to how civilization has not progressed as much since the war. They cite minimal settlements, lack of nature reclamation, etc.

I take into account that Bethesda's games take place on the East coast of the U.S., which if you are a foreigner and do not know, is where the federal government mostly resides, and where much weapon research occurs, and it also has the largest population density. That says to me that the East coast would be hit by factors more nukes than the West coast, where Obsidian has set all of their games.

The increased radioactive material in the region relative to the West coast, and the decreased chance of people outside the vault surviving, make it very believable that the East coast would have developed factors more slowly than the West coast, both for nature and civilization.

Wait what? Power armor can be stolen?

Yeah settlers will nick them to defend the settlement if you're not careful, I had that happen (fortunately had a save from before).

You can also get your human/humanoid companions to wear your spare power armor. So now I've upgraded to a BOS T60 I've got Nick wearing my old Minuteman T45.

yeah, plus I mean do people really think 30 years later the area is going to be close to inhabitable without tons of radiation everywhere. 200 years later to where some radiation starts to dissipate and they're able to start growing some crops seems more belieiveable than doing that 30-50 years later.

Played about 5 hours now.

Trying to find a settlement. Loving the combat much more than any other Bethesda game. I don't feel like I need to rely on VATS any more. Graphics are ok. Some scenes look great with God Rays.

Cool vid. BoS to OP.
The constant uhhhhbb holy crap holy crap uhhhhhh what was that uhhhhhh made me turn the sound off.

Ad Victoriam!
Iv start working on other settlements. Just making them mini bases. Sanctuary is the capital for now.

The supply lines are nice addition.
Hmm i dont get the building aspect.
I did the minimal work required (power and radio tower thing) and never get attacked.

Iv gotten attacked around 7 times now. Pretty easy to defend. I just like the base aspects. Feels like the player has home to go back to. Plus I feel like Queen of the Commonwealth right now.

At what point are people putting on their power armor?

I'm level 12 and only have the one set of armor and I never make the trek to pick it up and put it on. What sort of encounters generally necessitate its use?

by the way, is the
glowing sea
always affected by radiation storms or was I just "lucky"? because it looked fucking creepy as shit (as if the zone isnt creepy enough already. And did anyone venture off exploring there? I found 2 other locations that werent the quest ones(s) but didnt explore them, I was scared and the whole zone was just oppressive and I wanted out :(

also when can we stop spoiler tagging the
glowing sea
>_>

none? I rolled around with one for a bit when I had like 45 cores and all the core perks, and its...ok. its weird. the cores still drain fast if you sprint even with the perk, and I find it hard to see my health in it. Also it seems the armor itself gets destroyed fast. There is 1 point in the story where you need to use it (actually you dont need to but the alternative is awful). And I dont mean the begining bit.

Best sarcastic line of the game for me so far (pretty far in I think, main line story spoilers)
I'm here to pick up an order. Two large pepperoni and a calzone. Name is "Fuck you."

TW3's immersion problems are very minor compared to FO4, as you said the biggest one for me is the amount of monsters literally just outside a village. However, even I can look past that since people are always talking about their loved ones being kidnapped, murdered, or having a cursed placed on them in every town. FO4, on the other hand, makes no narrative sense on any level. I can slightly look past the 300 years later aspect but the basic design of the world makes no sense.

Diamond City, which actually looks more like a small town, is in the heart of downtown Boston next to super mutants and crazy Raiders. Why? How do these people feed themselves? Their is a small plot of farm land in the city but it's FAR too small to sustain the population of the city. Why is the water purifier seeming run by a little kid? Why does he then sell the purified water? Wouldn't it make sense for water to be free for all citizens? How do cooks get their meat? What about Goodneighbor, what do they eat? They have zero farm-able land in the town or anywhere nearby. Where do they get water?

Now, let's compare this to say Novigrad in TW3, a believable city. You've got Novigrad which is a massive city housing thousands of people but then just outside the city you have some small craft houses that make things from clothes to paint. Pull just a bit further out from the city and you start to see lots of farm land, thus answering the question of food. You will also see guard posts setup at every major crossing that leads near the city selling you on the idea that the city is secure. You see traders with carts walking towards and away from the city explaining how vendors and the city in general gets supplies in addition to the harbor loaded with merchant ships. And, we also have wells dotted through the city explaining the water situation. All in all we get one nice big believable city.

When you look back at FO4 you understand why nothing makes sense. You have these farms/settlements out in the wild in FO4 when in reality they should be closer to Diamond City. Why would you build yourself a farm right next to a steel mill home to the most crazy Raiders possible? Who are you selling your crops to or are you just eating them for yourselves? If I were to construct the area in and around Diamond City I would for starters make the City itself a "paradise," a true safe haven. DC should be a place for people with money, those that don't would be forced to ply their trade outside its walls with it becoming more dangerous the farther you get from the City's walls. I would dot the area outside of downtown with farms who all support DC with food but because of their distance suffer from Raider attacks every now and then. You would also see caravans coming to and from the city. In general, I would have created an atmosphere of the 1% v. the 99% when it came to DC and those outside of its walls as opposed to the nothingness atmosphere that exists there currently. Perhaps I would have one of the central quests of DC being whether or not you support an uprising from the "have nots" to claim the city for themselves and make it a more open place.

Those are just some idea but really anything would be better than what we got.

I had to ditch Strong as a companion because he just doesn't seem to like the way I roll at all. Hack terminals/lockpick something? Strong disliked that. Jump into your power armor? Strong disliked that.

Sorry dude. I just don't think you and I are going to get a long.

I did too, dude was getting on my last damn nerve, everything I did was making him mad.

But anyway, brruuuhhhhhh, I LOOOOVVEEEE the power armor in this game. I don't even walk around outside of my settlement without my power armor.

This is my power armor collection so far, I got two more, but Piper is wearing one as she is traveling to other settlements because of the supply line and the other Preston is wearing power armor with minute men paint job since he's on guard duty in Sanctuary.

All the power armor I have each got some type of unique thing about them.

For example my most worn and most power armor has a jet pack, its SUCH a fucking beast.
Gw7OTA5.gif

I abuse the living shit out of that jet pack, even using a gatling gun with it while from the air.

I also got a power armor that has a stealth field that activates when I crouch and stand still.

I love power armor in this game, never leave home without it. My power armor and my gatling gun, makes very hard seem like easy mode.

But some old gameplay I found.....scared the shit outta me when this happened.

My game glitched with the quest "Defend Tenpines Bluff". It says to talk to Preston yet it wont let me, and it's constantly set as an active quest and won't let me toggle it off.

Anyone else have this same issue?

Ugh I dont like the crafting system. How do I get most of the things like oil, screws, etc? If I deposit junk on my workplace will it be converted in that stuff?

Most of it is just found out in the field -- if you're trying to craft something, you can tag the materials needed and the game will put a magnifying glass next to them in containers and such. And yes, any junk deposited will get automatically scrapped once you craft something.

It will, deposit all the junk into it. Also you can tag any resource in inventory for easier search. Just change the view in junk and tag anything you need the most.

Anyone else constantly running out of wood? It's the only resource I never have enough of....

Get the scrapper perk for screws. Everything else is just a matter of picking up every bit of junk you find.

And there's a perk rank that makes the tagged items actually glow when you're close to them I believe.

The crafting system is awesome. Makes everything useful.
Collect everything. You can mark what crafting materials you need. Items will then have a mark next to them to identify that it has the correct materials you marked.

Store junk at your workplace and will break it down automatically.

6 crank laser musket you guys

6 cranks of love. Crank that love 6 times

By far my best weapon, its my go-to when I need to ge serious, like against a sentry bot or some nasty legendary. it has one of thouse double shot affixes too

You also need the scrapper perk to find rarer items such as screws I believe...or it makes it easier to find them

Why do some of my landmarks say cleared on the map and others don't? There are some I know I completely exhausted and it doesn't say clear.
