Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

Metacritic updating with Yahoo! Games (9/10): https://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/review--xenoblade-chronicles-x-232609388.html

As is the whole of Xenoblade Chronicles X. The staggering amount of real estate, the intricate combat system, the engaging narrative, and the sheer number of things to do makes it a real JRPG standout. It’s water in a desert for Wii U owners, and a smashing success that will likely be remembered as one of the system’s finest.

All this globetrotting comes with a price: upsetting the local beasts. Throwing caution to the wind isn't recommended, as even early on you can find yourself in an unwinnable battle with a ridiculously powerful adversary by simply walking in the wrong direction. This is one of the most frustrating things about Xenoblade Chronicles X, but is alleviated by finding routes around the monsters giving you problems. It's not fun having to tiptoe around an enormous reptile or restart from your last save, however.

I'm still surprised to be reading complaints about this. Bring on the giant spiders coming outta nowhere I say.

And the Daily Dot (7/10): http://www.dailydot.com/geek/xenoblade-chronicles-x-review/

X shines when it comes to combat, exploration, and vehicle systems, making this sequel more engrossing than its predecessor. It’s richness makes it easier to overlook the shortcomings from both the technical limitations of the Wii U and the inconsistent soundtrack.

If the game had a separate autosave files, wouldn't the mech insurance thing be pointless? Players would just restart if their mech was about to be destroyed. There would be absolutely no consequences in this game with a separate autosave file.

Unless it autosaved over your one file after mech death and we know that is not desirable in this type of game.

Uh, isn't being able to save anywhere, at any time the one thing that makes mech insurance pointless? Save before every encounter and you're good to go. Save every 10 minutes, and you'll never barely lose any progress, either. If the game used autosaves like most games - save when finishing mission or quick traveling - it would probably save like every 30 to 45 minutes. I really don't see how that devalues insurance vs normal saving.

I can't believe some people think having a separate autosave slot is a negative in an RPG, but each to their own I guess.

Also, just one save slot? Are you fucking kidding me?

Is Eurogamer's essential its highest award?

Unless there's a "If you can't afford the game, message me and I'll get it for you CAUSE IT'S SO FUCKING GOOD" rating too, I'd imagine so

I'm not so sure. Both are niche, and Bayonetta 2 was one of the most well received games last year.

Nah. Xenoblade is no Final Fantasy in terms of popularity, but being a JRPG and a big one at that, I'm pretty sure it will reach a far bigger audience than Bayonetta-type of games had.

Flight module is about 40ish hours in from what I've read. Didn't most reviews stop around 50 hours?

One reviewer played 85 hours and supposedly didn't actually finish the game. I don't recall if they meant the main story or not.

edit: can't track down the source of where I heard this, so take that with a grain of salt.

Gonna check if my special edition is fine. Hopefully not on backorder...

Was it Gamexplain?

Derrick Bitner of GameXplain is who you talking about.

I think he unlocked Flight Mode and thought after playing with that for a bit, he had seen enough of the game to make an opinion.

Anyone who ordered the Xenoblade X strategy guide from SpeedyHen when it was ~£13, have you had any emails about it yet?

Should have been dispatched if they're aiming to get it to you by release date, no?

Hoping for digital release in 14 hours (10am in Finland), but I expect it to be more like 24 hours. Not expecting ANYTHING from NoE.

The console+game pack shipped yesterday, will be delivered today, can't wait to get home from work.

Will go to the store before though to grab screen protector, smash bros and mario kart.

My copy has been send out! Wohoo!

Its been a while since I was so hyped for a game and the reviews are exact in the range I expected (and hoped) them to be in so my hype is as strong as ever.

Mine is now on it's way. I just hope the package dude doesn't come tomorrow when I am not here. And no one else is. D:

Also, OT when?! D:

I was kinda thinking I could cheat the game by AFK

just going to a safe spot in the world once I have the money making stuff up and just allow it to give me cash leaving the game running overnight

did they think of a way to block this? Like you have to hit a button to earn your cash?

Hope not! I'm also thinking of idling to get some money in the game, maybe not overnight but whenever I'm taking a short break from the game (eating, going to the grocery store etc)

Anyone mind answering this?

It's gonna be the 4th in a bit over 14 hours in the UK and the rule is the day before the game releases, so very soon I guess.

So yeah as I said above I'm receiving the console+game today,w as thinking bout getting Smash bros + mario kart, can only get two games.

Are those two the best bets IYO? Was wondering about mario maker too.

I've had the wii u before, played bayonetta 2, played wonderful 101, played super mario 3d world, played splatoon and played tropical freeze already.

Sorry for the brief off-topic :P

Finally slept a bit. On the issue of autosave, in old games not saving meant you lost all your progress (whereever you were). in XBC all your session progress is "saved" constantly, so whenever you die you retain everything that you had when you died. Due to this there is basically never a reason to save. And since I was just exploring and had progressed a bit in the current chapter there wasn't really a reason to save. Quite annoying imho.

Anyway, my own fault and I gonna have to replay everything now.

Don't forget to save people (especially when you are immersed in the game xD).

In any case I thank you because your experience is a heads up for some of us. I'll remember saving thanks to you.

You have already played some of the best the Wii U has to offer. So yeah, MK8 + Smash are 2 best bets. You can also try Yoshi's Wooly World if you like platforming + exploration, or Captain Toad if you enjoy the Captain Toad segments in 3D World.

I asked my Brother to pick this up for me for Xmas since he couldn't figure out what to get me.

What a huge mistake I've made. All I want to do is go in and buy it tomorrow D: The long wait until 25th December...

I suppose it gives me a chance to play more Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS.

I'll get captain toad eventually, I played woolly world with a friend at his house to the end, beautifull and charming game.

Thanks for the input.

If you have someone to play them with, sure. MK8 is really just alright fun, but Smash Bros is fucking amazing in local multiplayer. Really wish I had even more people to play it with than just my brother, but it's fantastic even with just the two of us.

My copy from game collection (regular version, damn you Amazon.fr) just shipped. Hopefully it gets delivered tomorrow. Price was pretty good though, only £34.65.
