PlayStation 2 comes to PS4 official trailer

I understand not allowing discs, but ps2 classics you bought? Yeah they did more work on those titles, but not even an upgrade option is a little bit sour if you have to rebuy a PS2 game you bought last gen for $15. Seems steep.

Should have went with $10, seeing as how you can find all of these physically for less than that, and they're only touching the resolution. I'm assuming the trophy support will be very limited, too, seeing as how there are no plats.
To be fair, framerate will likely be improved as well.

15 dollars for a PS2 title with just added Trophy support? Yeah, no. Even with the upscaling that's just too expensive.

Also, is it confirmed this won't support old PS2 classics? Sucks for people who already owned these games.

EDIT: Apparently it is confirmed. Ridiculous decision.

Wished I could play XI Go/Bombastic on either PS3 or PS4 (since my launch PS3 with bc died and my PS2 long ago when I got it had trouble reading discs...) but it's not on either the JP or US stores... I did win a prize on the Japanese version, though...

Wonder when well see PS2 games for PSplus, maybe when they drop the Vita.

Cool though. Never played Rogue Galaxy. Really want Star Ocean 3 to come.

Have you ever caught yourself having a geek moment? When I saw Mark of Kri and Twisted Metal Black, I had to stop myself from grinning ear-to-ear like this was the best news of the day.

This is awesome. Will GLADLY re-purchase those two amazing games.

EDIT - Just saw the prices. WHAT??????? Nostalgia moment has passed. No sale.

It's worth mentioning PS2 classics on PS3 cost $10, so they are effectively charging $5 extra for the upressing and trophy support.

What a joke.

Not only are they not compatible when the titles are available they are even more expensive because of an up-res and trophy support. This is not the best way to implement this.

Microsoft showed how to do BC right. This goes the opposite direction.

"PS2 Classics are not Compatible" is the most tragic way to end an advert for PS2 support for PS4

Rogue Galaxy is a blast. Fun combat, anime centric (but not over the top), lots of charisma, and I enjoyed getting the outfits for the characters.

I even had the strategy guide when it came out. I noticed they had backgrounds for the Vita, so I knew someone up there was keeping it alive somehow. It felt like it would show up one of these days.

I had Dark Cloud the day it came out. The most memorable thing was having to walk back to get more water. lol

When Nintendo does it, no one bats an eye.

Nintendo's Virtual Console setup on 3DS and Wii U has by far been one of the most criticized aspects of those systems.

Granted the Wii U having the ability to pay only $1 if you already owned the game isn't a bad idea and is a model that Sony should have looked to. Paying more than what we originally paid for the same game is... yeah.

Depends on the game. Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy are in the $20-30 range on ebay. Dark Cloud 2 is $70+ so it'll be a god send when it finally shows up.

Not sure why some are up in arms about the pricing. Did you think you were going to get these games for $5 or something? They are 1080p w/ trophies and full PS4 intergration. Be realistic.

Nope. :p I strongly disagree.

The original game is really under appreciated. :(

Why does everybody keep comparing this to MS' BC? This isn't PS3 games. MS isn't offering original Xbox games.

I don't really care, but I don't see the situations as comparable and am curious as to why people keep saying it.

This is the complete opposite of what I want.

1) This requires development effort, which means a lot of the third party games I want won't be released on it, such as :
- Suikoden 3 to 5
- Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
- Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter
- Valkyrie Profile 2
- Dragon Quest VIII
- Radiate Stories
- Grandia III
- Shadow Hearts 1 to 3
- And the most important game, Xenosaga Episode III
2) These games are made specifically for PS4 which means when PS5 rolls around, we're in the same boat and all our old purchases are wasted.
3) Same as above, all our existing purchases, whether disc-based or buying their current PS2 classics are wasted.

This is a fucking money grab. You could have supported both, with emulation and "enhanced emulation" (trophy support, up rendering, etc) for those select games. Shame on you Sony.

Can someone explain upressed 1080p to me? Is it going to look closer to an SD or HD game?
How much better are these going to look compared to the emulated PS2 games on PS3

It's not BC. It's like mini-remakes. BC wouldn't include trophy support.

It's kind of like the native upscale of PCSX2.

Theses games are NOT remakes. The assets of the original PS2 titles remains unchanged however the games are internally upscaled to 2 to 4x native resolution.

As for the trophy support. What makes the most sense is the Emulator is constantly reading memory addresses in the runtime of the ISO itself, so when a specific memory address is flagged such as killing a specific enemy or obtaining a certain item, that would trigger the trophy.

It's rather interesting really.

$15 does seem a bit high, but I've wanted to play Dark Cloud again for yeeeeears. Got the disc and manual on my shelf, but no PS2/BackPatPS3 to play it on.

Now add the second as well so I can play both and really re-live some of my childhood.

I think I only have one PS2 classic, Katamari. Would buy that again, and any fighting game.
Would be better if they got deep in the library though...

The dream of playing Suikoden 3, Xenosaga Episode III, Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne, and Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter on my PS4 is now dead :(

The "this won't be available on PS5" is a good argument.

The idea is to keep your games across generations. Not having to rebuy everything because "hey, they are up-resed now!".

It really is the opposite of what I want. The only problem should be licenses not Sony themselves.

Worst case scenario with this.

I'm in for Rogue Galaxy. Hopefully Dragon Quest 8 and Wild Arms 3 become available soon, I really want to play those again.
