PlayStation 2 comes to PS4 official trailer

Why are they 4:3, aren't widescreen hacks a trivial addition to 3D emulation? I mean if you're going to double-bill people for 15 year old games, at least go the extra mile.

When Nintendo does it, no one bats an eye.

When Sony does it, everybody loses their minds.

Not true at all. People really dislike what Nintendo's done with VC on Wii U too. Gonzo the Great posted quiet a bit about it, and I've expressed my disappointment with how stupid the upgrade fees are too. But somehow Sony's found something worse to top that with.

The "this won't be available on PS5" is a good argument.

The idea is to keep your games across generations. Not having to rebuy everything because "hey, they are up-resed now!".

It really is the opposite of what I want. The only problem should be licenses not Sony themselves.

Worst case scenario with this.

Worst case scenario is no PS2 games on PS4 at all. And let's be honest here, not many made use of PS2 classics on PS3 and even less are going to want to play PS2 games on PS4. It's just an extra option. I mean do you really sit there pining away that you can't play Dark Cloud 2 on PS4? Do you even play it on PS3?

Not if they break the image, which is a no no on official emulators fullstop. On the plus side, they will probably have a "stretch to fit screen" option.

Where are people seeing the prices? I've watched the video a couple times now looking for it, but I couldn't spot it.
edit: Oh, nevermind. I found the prices elsewhere...

15 does seem a little bit high as a first reaction, but I'd pay that much just for the convenience of not having to trudge through the second hand market to get a good disc and trophies and all.
It would be nice for upgrade paths and pricing and whatever, but in the long run I don't think this will really have any impact on the domination that PS4 is doing WW either way.

Hopefully some of the releases are the rare games that are 'asspensive as fuck to get games like what happened with the Tron Bonne game not long ago.

Do you know how many games I've bought from Nintendo due to the way I feel about their digital practices? 0

I've bought hundreds of games on PSN across PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and Vita. If this is the way Sony want to handle their digital policies going forward do you know how many I'll buy? The number approaches 0

Ridiculous, if you bought the a PS2 game on the PS3 you can't play it on PS4? That goes against all the previous policies regarding PS Classics, if you bought a PS1 game on PS3 you can play it on the Vita or PSP, but for some reason if you bought a PS2 game on the PS3 you can't play it on PS4?

Am I understanding it correctly?

This is a stupid move that hardly earns them more money, this is early PS3 Sony all over again.

Also horrible prices.

I'm hoping there will be a decrease in price if you own one of the classics already on PS3 at the very least.

$15 is too high.

But MAN they look good. Rogue Galaxy looks amazing. War of the Monsters looks amazing. and Mark of Kri! nice picks on their part.

But personally I'll wait for the $10 point, they pushed it too far IMO.

When we say 1080p upres, are we literally discussing the resolution it renders in? Or will there be texture and frame rate enhancements??

Higher res, better performance. If its capped at 30, it'll likely be locked 30. If its unlocked, it'll be solid 60 probably. Atleast that's how it was for the star wars games.

Coming from PS2 for GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas, that's a revelation

Prices are no bueno.

But I'm buying Monsters, Rogue, and TMB right away.

ARC THE LAD.

Please bring the PSOne collection next.

Thank fuck I can play PS2 discs uprezzed on PC. People seriously shouldn't accept, and allow Sony to continue sell these games at, such ridiculous prices.

People being so willing to throw their money away on scams like this is exactly why the "Well, vote with your wallet!" defence never makes any sense.

What would people prefer....slight remaster in 1080p with trophies OR full backwards compatibility with disc support?

Bit lame that you can't play disc or ps2 classics, or if you have them already maybe a small fee to play this new version.

At the same time I want to know when Bounty Hunter is coming, and if we do get this rumoured Ace Combat announcement I'd buy AC4/5/0 again in a heartbeat. I'm pet of the problem I guess, but God dammit I love those games.

This is the complete opposite of what I want.

1) This requires development effort, which means a lot of the third party games I want won't be released on it, such as :
- Suikoden 3 to 5
- Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
- Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter
- Valkyrie Profile 2
- Dragon Quest VIII
- Radiate Stories
- Grandia III
- Shadow Hearts 1 to 3
- And the most important game, Xenosaga Episode III
2) These games are made specifically for PS4 which means when PS5 rolls around, we're in the same boat and all our old purchases are wasted.
3) Same as above, all our existing purchases, whether disc-based or buying their current PS2 classics are wasted.

This is a fucking money grab. You could have supported both, with emulation and "enhanced emulation" (trophy support, up rendering, etc) for those select games. Shame on you Sony.

That's not true, the added features these games have are designed to work with their emulator, that is something they can use again in the future on new hardware.

I highly doubt Sony won't utilise BC for the PS5 and have everything on the PS4 running from the get go. It's was probably part of their thinking when they made the architecture jump from the Cell to a more standard tech in x86-64, it makes it easier on developers and it will make it much easier to get backwards compatibility running in the future, they likely won't be switching CPU architectures again in the future any time soon. It's partly why old PC games still work on modern hardware, the core instruction set hasn't changed, and anything that is an issue is much easier to deal with than jumping across architectures like they have from the Cell which worked quite dramatically different.

Come on, Valkyrie Profile 2.
Only game I would buy.

Just watched the video. Those don't look rendered at a higher resolution at all to me.

If the Star Wars games are any indication,

They are 4:3, and upscaled to 1080p, but the internal res is far above native 480i and above 720p, their aspect ratio is still the same however.

They are still 4:3 so they don't break the image with widescreen where not supported, but they will likely have a 'fit to screen' option.

What would people prefer....slight remaster in 1080p with trophies OR full backwards compatibility with disc support?

Are you acting like Sony cares about disc support to begin with? We knew they didn't from the start.

Count me out. I've already purchased these games on PS3 and 2, Sony won't get my money a third time for the same game because of fuckin trophies. Great for those who missed these games though, I recommend War of the Monsters to anyone who hasn't played it. Great multiplayer fun.

The blog screenshots don't look 1080p at all, especially the Dark Cloud 2 pics.

You realize you will see every PS2 game in 1080p as your output on PS4 right?

Given the DF analysis from before it pointed to this being the case.
Also no discount/upgrade path for owners of PS2 classics is shitty maybe with enough pressure they will do something

The King of Fighters 2000 on PS4 with online play(through SharePlay) is awesome! Gonna get that plus Vice City for sure! :)

Yeah, but that is a nerfed version. I am assuming this is the ungutted ps2 version correct? The one with all the songs?

I don't see how this could have the songs unless they reacquired the rights and all that. I'm willing to bet that some of the songs are gone.
