Why does the PSX hype seem muted compared to last year?

Probably because it was an unknown quantity last year, and really, after this year's E3 there's not really anything major left to go crazy about being a possibility this year.

Most of us are just here to see/hear about new games.

It was a celebration 20 years of Playstation. People expected megatons.

We got SFV, and Square almost delivered, but they forgot the Remake part of FF VII.

E3 happened and people can rest easy for the most part.....almost every major announcement came at E3 and fucking just destroyed everyones brains. We are now all fried zombies that just are excited for anything unexpected at this point lol.

TLG we all expected eventually.....but FFVIIR AND SHENMUE 3.......yes that conference still fucking blows my mind.

Nothing can top this years E3. That's why.

Dreams are no longer dreams once they become a reality.

Shenmue 3, Nier 2, The Last Guardian, Psychonauts 2, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Yakuza 5, Gravity Rush 2 and FFVII Remake among other big surprises have already happened this year... There's not much else left Sony can really announce.

Ok one announcement.

Woowwwwww

Plus it's a predictable one on Capcom's part. What they really need to announce now is Deep Down again.

Overhyping the conference (it was the first conference ever to be fair) and David Jaffe cursing left and right to end the show probably doesn't leave a good taste.

Although I think this show will be really good.

Because Agent will end the show. Believe

That's true, other than yet more Yakuza, I don't know what I even want.

Possibly a new Parappa after Bosman mentioned it though.

People went insane last year. They overhyped the shit out of that event and were disappointed. I didn't listen to any of the insiders and got a nice show with some good announcements. I expect today is going to be the same.

I personally cant take much more excitement:

Sony has me on board for at least 15 1st party and 3rd party exclusives not to mention the 3rd party games and other console games.... id like to get thru most of those first

A new Legend of Dragoon would be the only thing I want.....but at this point I'm extremely happy with whats coming. So if it happens.....holy shit.....if it doesn't eh, I'm not surprised or too stressed out about it.

Expectations have been tempered this year since we know the sort of event to expect, and thankfully there are no hype-mongering fake insiders around to whip people into a frenzy.

We had many great Sony showings this year and some really insane announcements for PS4. Especially Sony's E3 showing was like those forum parodies in a way. And that recent Paris show had some neat stuff as well. And then there was also the true PS-VR reveal. If Sony has some insane stuff in te pipelines, I expect them to save it for when the PS4 hype calms down, they probably want to have some surprises next year as well.

I am kind of saturated in my hype levels for the coming year. I honestly do not expect any megatons. Nor do I need them, as I am content with this years announcements. But I do look forward to seeing some of the games we know are coming! And any surprise is welcome, offcourse.

Not every show needs to have ridiculous hype, just seeing more of what gaming will bring us in the coming years is enough for an enthousiast like me, especially since we have had plenty megatons already. Hell, even Psychonauts 2 just a few days back blew my mind.
Yeah, I feel the same way. The requirement for a good conference shouldn't always be "WTF?!?! ALL THESE MEGATONS!!!". It can just be a mostly laid back show where we get some cool announcements like localizations, showings of previously announced games, etc... with maybe one notable announcement.

That is fine with me for the end of the year. Especially when Sony just had such a massive E3 with two solid showings after it (TGS and PGS).

Shenmue 3, Nier 2, The Last Guardian, Psychonauts 2, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Yakuza 5, Gravity Rush 2 and FFVII Remake among other big surprises have already happened this year... There's not much else left Sony can really announce.

This, what an amazing year.

And Dragon Quest XI looking like a real next-gen evolution of DQ8 coming for the first time since 8.

Well that's not really my question lol; I just wanted to see what people thought the main reason why the "hype" was much more muted. Unrealistic expectations aside, the level of engagement still seems lower with less people talking about it. I guess the person below you made a good point regarding people thinking it was a unique one off conference.

I'd say relax; GAF and every other gaming related website will blow up once the event is about to start. Koofu already said the correct thing that this year we don't have dozens of people claiming to be "in the know" and telling people bullshit they heard from somewhere. Plus, PSX last year was okay but not really great which is why people lowered their expectations. It's a cool fan event with neat reveals and stuff, not a second E3.

It's pretty good as it is now I feel.

We got the E3 of the ages this year and VR will probably (and rightfully) be a focus. That tech isn't exiting to watch in a presentation as Paris Games Week proved.

Why wouldn't I be?

So we should be hyped up because they announced street fighter last year.
No one said anything about being hyped because of one major announcement last year.

You were just wrong in claiming nothing major was announced last year and you were corrected accordingly.

Personally, I would consider something like the gameplay reveal for Uncharted 4 fairly big too.

Why are there so many black and white rigid thinkers here?

When someone says nothing big was announced they don't literally mean nothing.

Yep agreed. I mean I don't even mind this, like you said, it's a cool fan event with neat reveals etc. I was just wondering to be honest, and people like Kyofou did bring in valid perspectives (like the lack of "insiders") as to why the pre-conference hype was lower. But yeah, it's better that way and I'm not worried at all.

Besides, it's always best for people to keep expectations in check because either way people won't be disappointed.

I'm hyped, at least. I thought PSX was excellent last year, mostly because I was so delighted to see Suikoden II being rereleased. For fans of niche Japanese games, PSX 2014 was near E3 2015 levels of excitement.

Knowing I can play Dark Cloud in 1080/60 with trophies this evening already has me pumped.

Maybe because it can't get much better than e3 this year? Dunno I'd rather be low on hype and get pleasantly surprised.

Sony's E3 2015 happened, you can't expect hype over any event after that for at least this decade.

Basically this. FFVII, TLG, Shenmue 3 all happened at E3.

I think it's just that people don't know what to be hyped for now that three of the most requested games are in development at this time.

I guess we can be hyped for a possible AGENT mention today.

I'm headed to the show but I don't expect anything huge. God of War 4 will probably get announced here. Maybe something from Level 5? Not sure what else.

Should be a fun show.

I think it would be far more simple to just be more precise with what you're saying.

"Aside from Street Fighter 5 (which was admittedly a fairly big announcement), there were not many big announcements at the show last year."

Done.

This, what an amazing year.

And Dragon Quest XI looking like a real next-gen evolution of DQ8 coming for the first time since 8.
Yes having 2D retro game play on one screen and 3D on the other and being abis to choose one or the other is awesome but i do like the mutilplayer aspects of DQ9.

It's not that we are not hyped we are just waiting to see if my man daigo washed or nah. Nail biting anticipation to see if he can win the last sfiv tournament.

Shenmue 3, Nier 2, The Last Guardian, Psychonauts 2, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Yakuza 5, Gravity Rush 2 and FFVII Remake among other big surprises have already happened this year... There's not much else left Sony can really announce.

There's still plenty they could announce, like God of War 4, a new Crash Bandicoot, Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 7, that Bloody Roar reboot that there were rumors about, that SCEJ-made AAA JRPG Verendus talked about which could or could not be Legend of Dragoon 2, one of the two remaining From Software exclusives, Soul Calibur 6, Ace Combat 7.

Plus it's a predictable one on Capcom's part. What they really need to announce now is Deep Down again.

After Ono previously said we wouldn't be getting SF5 until 2018, no it definitely wasn't predictable.

FF7 Remake, Shenmue 3, Psychonauts 2, The Last Guardian have all been announced....there's not a whole lot left to hpye about.

There's no TheWorthyEdge around this year. That's why.

Also, PSX ended on a sour note last year with Drawn to Death.People probably kept their expectations in check this time around. Doesn't help that it was PS's 20th anniversary as well. 21st anniversary ain't all that.

FFXII would be nice, but not fully expecting it. Honestly, if they announced Yakuza 0 though, I'd be so happy and call it on of the best events of all time.

That said, I could be having the worst shit of my life in sever agony and Adam Boyes could sneak in the window and just whisper in my ear "Yakuza 0" while my pants are down, cheeks on the seat and I'd call that one of the best events ever.

I'm not a robot so I don't type like that.

Pro tip.

When someone says they didn't enjoy something at all they probably got a bit of enjoyment out of it.

We learned from our mistakes, lol.

All of Sony's post-E3 shows were similar to the ones they had last year, so this one will probably be too. Perfectly fine with that, game announcements are always exciting.

Yes having 2D retro game play on one screen and 3D on the other and being abis to choose one or the other is awesome but i do like the mutilplayer aspects of DQ9.

Cute ;)

I was obviously talking about the real "next-gen" PS4 version.
Both will probably be good though and it remains to be seen how different or similar they are since they said they won't be totally the same. Might be worth buying both.
