I hate JRPG's but fuck man, I really DIG Nino Kuni 2's visuals and artstyle. I wonder if it's needed to play the first one to understand this one? I read the first one has tons of grinding which is why I always disliked JRPG's.

Only if you don't do the side quests. Do like half the easy side quests and you'll probably be fine.
