What's the basis for everyone believing that Snoke is actually Plageuis? I never got around to reading the book. Genuinely curious.
Lunacy is the real basis, but otherwise people believe that there must be some connection between all three trilogies and Darth Plagueis is the perfect fit. Even more so than Vader, who has a presence in all three trilogies but let's ignore that.
He had some huge backstory in the EU I believe, but after that was erased we know little about him. He was probably Palpy's sith master (not outright said in Ep III but heavily implied). Sheev then tells Anakin a story about how Plagueis was so POWERFUL that he could create life via midichlorians (wat) and even prevent people from dying (wat). Palpatine ends the story saying that Plagueis was killed by his apprentice. The main purpose of this story is to contribute to Anakin being eventually swayed by Palpatine to join him, since he was concerned about Padme dying.
Since we never saw Plagueis die (or saw him at all), and his whole gimmick is immortality, people clung to the idea that he could show up again. This is dumb for multiple reasons.
A) It's clear that they kind of want to ignore anything in the PT. The word "midichlorians" isn't going to be said anywhere in the new trilogy. Nor will "taxes" or "Gungans." The only concept or idea I can see them bringing up is of course "Sith" which was not said in the original trilogy at all, yet is too big to ignore.
B)Palpatine could have just been making this shit up. I took it that way when I first saw the movie. I mean Palpatine's rise to power consists solely on tricking people. He wants Anakin, probably knows he's worried about Padme dying, so hey what if he just told some immortality legend to persuade Ani to join him? It totally sounds like something he would do. Hell even when Anakin kneels before monster mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash, Palpatine straight up says that he doesn't know how to make people immortal but he's working on it. By then it's too late for Anakin to do anything about it.
C)This whole story kind of builds on the very dumb idea of Anakin being a "virgin birth." So did Plagueis or Palpatine MAKE Anakin? God that's dumb.
I'm very intrigued to learn who Snoke is and his motivations. You gotta make everything bigger for whatever reason (instead of blowing up planets, let's blow up a STAR), so how do you top the supreme lord of evil who has a gigantic empire at his disposal?
