I rewatched A New Hope today, for all the shit Lucas gets I thought he did a brilliant job with that film, its not faultless by any means but it's got charm, charisma, good pacing, the characters interact with each other well, and a terrific score. R2D2 is adorable in it. I hadn't watched it in a few years and I was reminded by how much i loved it today, if FA can match some of that I would be content.

We got a full review here.

He gave it a 7.5 because it's too much like A New Hope and complains about the story.

This will be interesting. Wonder how many reviews will dock it points for being too similar? I understand some people having issue with it but I don't know in the grand scheme if it'll be seen as a negative. I have a feeling most moviegoers will be ok with it?

What can Luke even teach Rey at this point, chick is OP as shit. Flying the Falcon, beat the Raid dudes, escaped on her own, overpowered Ren both in the interrogation and lightsbaer confrontation. She's already way more capable than Luke in the first two movies! I guess he can teach her how to run around with a jedi master on her back.

Seems more likely that Kylo is just a wuss. Also, what Luke did with his X-Wing in the original was "impossible".

He stops blaster bolts with the force. Have we even seen anyone do something like that? Even Vader just deflected shots.

Every Sith we have seen has had a moment of over confidence where they were struck. Vader against Obi, Maul against Obi, Palpatine with Vader, Dooku with Anakin. It's their biggest flaw. And maybe he's just straight up surprised by something Rey does.

This is probably pretentious of me, but pardon me for not caring what some site I've never heard of called "Geekster" has to say in an embargo breaking review.

Call me when the A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips of the film crit world have weighed in...

Man, I really hope Syriel is wrong about the soundtrack being the film's weak point. That's the thing I care about the most with the movie, next to Boyega.

Seems this will be the common complaint in regards to the story. I'm curious though. In what direction can they take it without it being too similar while also trying to be faithful?

That's tough because with this movie I always thought it would have a very familiar feeling. This movie needs to repair the damage that was done by the 3 previous ones.

It's why I said earlier that I think your moviegoers may like the nostalgia and callbacks. So I kinda knew they'd retread some plot points etc. This movie is to set up everything else. Now with the sequels they can do anything. You can't have a complete retread.

There was that movie at the beginning of the year, something about a Max being mad.

Edit:

I don't know how much of a problem, if at all, it actually is.

Vader dissipated them with his hand. And is that even in the movie, or just in that book?

I dunno, you can be faithful without repeating exact plot structures. Regardless of what you think about Lucas, he for the most part made pretty different Star Wars movies that still felt like Star Wars.

(... I'm fully anticipating someone bringing up the Death Star II or some other repeated element as proof of how I'm wrong now.)

Embargo is only for print I believe.

I just assumed his armor tanked the shot although I think the EU says he used Force Absorb or some nonsense.

I accepted a while ago that it was basically going to be a remake of A New Hope. I was worried about retreads ever since we got the first rumors about the starkiller. I'm just hoping that Episodes VIII and IX are more original. I still wish that Lucasfilm had used Lucas's outline and notes for the Sequel Trilogy. I would have liked to have seen where he would have taken the series.

That's my main concern for it. Too same-y and relying on nostalgia to get people to watch.

People are going to howl to high heaven about the nostalgia factor considering that's a major complaint about nu-Trek. That was the first worry I saw people bring up when Abrams was announced.

No, Collider and other blogs have said they aren't allowed to post theirs until midnight tonight.

Ok.

Two of my friends who do blogging for movies in lebanon just got to see it, they said they cant talk about it till midnight either (not sure which time zone but they signed a paper) but they said it was a lot of fun.

Probably into the toilet.

Honestly I don't think it's a problem that this movie borrows a lot from A New Hope. The current generation has ANH of their own now. Maybe if you're like super invested in the movies, it feels like a retread but there are countless others who are being introduced to Star Wars for the first time.

Basically it's only a negative if you're nostalgic about the older movies. IMO at least

I love a new hope and hearing that comparison doesn't give me a negative vibe

I love the beginning of a new chapter with new characters.

Looking forward to it.

It's just not our Star Wars anymore, it's the Star Wars for everyone,so they kinda restart it a bit.

ANH came out almost 40 years ago. I have no problem with it borrowing from it. There is always going to be a dilemma of how you create drastically different stories in this same universe while keeping the feel of Star Wars AND introduce a bunch of new characters.

I expect some crazier stuff from Rian and Colin.

Yeah I mean that was definitely the worry I had when he was revealed as director. I get he's a huge fan but that might be the biggest problem.

George didn't want to make movies for the fans anymore. And we got attack of the clones.

I'll take fanporn over soap opera Dick Tracy any day of the week.
