Sony announces partnership w/ KojiPro, New IP, 1st game "console exclusive to PS4"/PC

Maybe this is not rational thinking but I'm starting to regret the thousands of dollars and hours I've invested in 360 and XB1 over the last 8 years. If I went PS3 last gen I would've gotten PS4 on day one instead of being stuck in my current predicament, with a lengthy gold subscription, a shit-ton of achievements and a big Xbox backlog. Makes it a little more difficult to just outright switch sides.

I'm excited for Quantum Break and Scalebound but it feels like there are a million games announced every month which are console exclusive to PS4.

I honestly am thinking of immediately halting buying any multiplat games on XB1 moving forward. Will keep the XB1 for exclusives but slowly switch to PS4. I should get myself the Uncharted bundle. Gone Home is finally coming to consoles next month - I'm thinking I'll get that on PS4 when normally that would be an automatic day one XB1 purchase for me.
Buy the PS4 as long as it is available for $299.

You can't let outside influences dictate the fun you're having. There are no regrets. You have a lot of games to look forward to. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with having both platforms in your living room. Just have fun, play games, be merry.

what a waste of money, why even pay for something that's not gonna be exclusive? you're just paying so they don't put the game on xbox consoles. hardly anyone will gonna be buying a ps4 2 years from now just to play a kojima game anyway, might as well let he get the funding somewhere else to develop the game for all platforms.

If people aren't going to play the game on PS4 two years from now, would they play it on XBO either? I'd wager, that people buy consoles later on for the variety of games they offer, not for a single game.

So which tells you more, console exclusive or multiplatform? One tells you fuck all about where you won't be able to buy the game and the other is perfectly clear.

It has less to do with not caring about PC and more about clearly representing a game's release platforms, albeit in a manner that works best for the corporation. Imagine if instead they said something like "for consoles, exclusively for PS4."

If that's the case, why was there even questions on whether or not a PC version was implied? They could have just said, "for PS4 and PC". Does it get any clearer than that? Keep in mind, as I've said, I understand why they chose to present it in the way that they do, especially since Sony is partnering with him. It's to be expected. Don't know why y'all are so hung up on this.

i didn't say he had to choose MS, but if it was a competition between sony and ms i guess it's fine. i dont think he'd have a problem getting a funding from somewhere else, he could have a kick starter and people would be throwing money at him.

I'm honestly glad that he's not working on a new Metal Gear title. Been wanting to see something new from him for years. Super excited.

"Console exclusive"(stupid stupid term) is expected. Considering that this is a new game with a newly formed studio, the guy's gonna need funding. Good on Sony for partnering with him to make this all happen. At this point, as much as this bullshit annoys me, these pseudo exclusive deals aren't going away. It's business I guess and it's proven to be working out for Sony at least. I can't imagine what would happen if Microsoft or Nintendo snatched him up, and how they'd work out such a deal. I guess it would be different.

This well-thought-out post might explain why it works.
I think Sony’s strategy is misunderstood this generation, which is perhaps fortunate for them because they’ve been so successful with it. I wouldn’t go so far as to say Sony doesn’t see the PC as competition, but they definitely don’t see it as the immediate, direct competition. Adopting the “PC/PS4” strategy has paid incredible dividends; while the ultra-hardcore complain about how “confusing” the terminology is and how they have so few “true exclusives,” in the interim they’ve been very successful at keeping games away from their primary competition and they are stomping them. And, hey, look at the result—the package they can offer publishers is a lot more interesting and lucrative for both parties than if they had to go forward with a “Sony or nothing” strategy. Sony is obviously happy, developers are happy (as they keep doing these deals), the projects overall are more profitable, Sony puts less skin in the game financially, and ultimately the game is available to more people overall.

For me, the more interesting question is how they transition away from hardware in 8-10 years. That’s obviously the long-term plan and is the aim of Playstation Now (not backwards compatibility, which continues to be the refrain of people who completely do not understand what the service is). I’m kind of excited to see how they transform the business overall; hardware exclusivity is obviously not the future.

The PC is not going away.

Yes, everybody has a price. If he would have gotten the same conditions somewhere else, but twice the money, we would be looking at a sad Andrew on Youtube right now.

But I highly doubt he would have got same conditions from Microsoft, and my point was more of that Microsoft isn't spending that money in games division what it would require to get these games/companies exclusive.

Yeah, it was really nice. Can any Japanese speaking GAF comment on his how articulate and natural sounding he is?

I'm not native but he's pretty good. Many English speakers who learn Japanese have trouble with the sharp R and some other things which creates a certain accent, but he pulls it off pretty well.

Looking forward to seeing what he comes up with unshackled from the likes of Konami. Hopefully it will not be some microtransaction and insurance infested pile of over hyped shit.

Kickstarter? C'mon now.

I know what you are getting at, but I think that you overrating Kickstarter in this regard.
Why should Kojima choose an uncertain funding method vs. a direct proposal from the industry leading company??? Just for the sake of the universe? Once again, why should he be thinking about potential Xbone and NX sales when the majority of his fans have always been on Playstation????
MG 1,2,3 and 4 have been released on Sony plattforms with over 300 Mio. users combined vs. 25 Mio. orig. Xbox users for MGS 2+3 Subsistence and 20 Mio. Gamecube users MGS1 twin snakes (no new Kojima game on Xbox360 Wii and WiiU)

Logo gives me Alien/Prometheus vibes, which in turn hypes me up for something sci-fi.

Please be sci-fi.

I'll take cyberpunk as well.

To be honest I dont see the reason to buy a ps4 if I can play it on pc, If I buy a ps4 is to play exclusive games, like nintendo, I dont buy a console to play multiplataforms... Sony must be aware with this or is gonna be the next xbox that 80% of exclusive are on PC.

Kickstarter? C'mon now.
With the way Shenmue III got blasted by some for using KS, could you imagine the vitriol thrown at Sony if we had that happen again? Nevwrming the fact that we just had a year where a new KojiPro, Ys, Persona, Dragon Quest, Shenmue, FF7R, and a bevy of new games that were announced for a single platform.

Twas a good year.

Funding from where? EA, Activision, or Ubisoft? Many studios (some of them long gone) have regretted getting in bed with them. They may have money, but it comes with a lot of conditions.

Kickstarter? Is he making a point-and-click game?

It's not anti-console salt, it's anti-exclusive salt and I sympathize. I very much agree with his point that locking a game down to one or two platforms shouldn't be a cause for celebration even if you do own said platforms. Today you're happy because your favorite platform "won", tomorrow you'll be sad that you won't be able to play a game that you're interested in without spending hundreds of dollars on yet another gaming device.
That's interesting because I don't believe I've ever once seen you complain about a game being exclusive to your system of choice (PC). .

No we'll most likely be free of that garbage with this partnership.

The likes of EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc would have their greasy paws putting all that crap in the game if Kojima went 3rd party that way.

I guess we'll see Kojima @ Sony E3 2016 conference stage dropping a teaser trailer of the game.

I would assume TGS at the earliest for any type of game announcement. But who knows the scale of it.

I really think Kojima should make a smaller game for ps4, and then come out with a AAA PS5 launch title.

Sure, but they could. You said that they couldn´t. That´s wrong, they have the cash.

Just check again what they paid for Minecraft.

Nobody buys consoles for exclusives so that's okay.

By nobody I mean a huge amount of console buyers.

The warrior we deserve.

It's unfortunate you aren't nearly as impartial as you like to pretend to be.

The majority of console gamers don't care where else a game is avaiable on as long as they can play it on their platform of choice. Sony has no reason to care.
