Thoughts:

-Anyone bitching about Finn needs to settle down. The guy's got a story arc, he can't be badass right out the block. He's the reluctant hero. I loved his enthusiasm. Episode VIII needs to be a Finn/Poe road trip movie as they try to find Rey.

-Now Phasma, let's start to bitch. I mean two scenes and a gag, that's painful. I think they didn't realize what they had till she put on the armor and then it was too late. Sequels are going to have to pick things up. She can play Buford T. Justice to Finn/Poe's bandit!

-Not feeling Snoke at all yet. I really hope there's some bait and switch going on here. This movie has given me a Wizard of Oz vibe since the trailers and I hope it carries through in some way. I'd love a reveal that sends Kylo right off the edge and makes him take over or burn it all down. Also I found it interesting that he received the same kind of mark/injury on his face that Snoke has on his.

-The movie's a total ANH homage and I think it's a good place to be when you are reintroducing the series but I felt like the one thing it should have borrowed from it was the pacing. I understand why it moves fast because it covers a lot of ground, but it needs a little more breathing room in some places.

-All that talk about that cross guard and it wasn't Kylo that got hurt by it.

-His name is Ben. *rips heart out, drops on floor*

Where does it say that?

That's what I thought, they said they were destroying the republic and the senate?

Seems for some reason unexplained the Republic when it reinstitutes itself isn't on Coruscant anymore. Maybe Palpatine had some devious plan for the planet in the event the Empire failed or something

People need to understand that Phasma was literally just concept art for Kylo Ren they liked a lot and decided to make into a character.

Clearly they will feature her more in Episode 8. She is Kennedy's favorite. Christie was brought in way late into the process of this film.

I must say Finn is great, dude is just so extremely likeable, he and Poe became bros right away, became close with Rey and Han Solo liked the guy.

John Boyega did a terrific job.

Yeah, I really liked that him and Poe were instant bros.

Oscar Isaac wasn't in the movie enough.

That's what's great here. When both the villain and the heroes are gifted beginners here, they can keep them around and up the ante in the fights in every movie and still keep the character drama going. Like Ren's going to get his wish to be like Vader, but doubt he's gonna find happiness in it in the end.

How is Ben Ren a beginner? He's been at it for a couple decades, hasn't he? At least 10 years of it training under Snoke?
He's like a fully-leveled bottom-tier RPG character.

Not sure how I feel about the movie. Think I have to see it again. I was expecting something wide galaxy thingy and it was a lot more like a new hope than I expected.

One thing I don't really think I cared a lot for, was the music. Other than the old stuff here and there, it didn't really have that unique flair... It fell a bit too much into the background.

Just saw the movie, pretty awesome.

Though it was a bit on the predictable side (You see Han's death coming the minute he steps on that bridge and of course the giant planet of death has a power core for people to shoot) and IMO the villains aren't quite there yet (except for Andy Serkis, because he's awesome as always). I simply can't take Domhall Gleeson serious as a badass evil general (even though I love him as actor) and Adam Driver just should've kept his mask on, as soon as he took it off he instantly became his Girls character, only a little more evil-sounding but I'm sure the sequels will fix that. Oh, and what the hell kind of exit was that for Captain Phasma? I guess she comes back in the sequels, but this was just... weird.

Also, I was annoyed by the constant hinting towards Rey's parentage without any kind of resolution. Sure, I get that they want a big reveal in the next movie (or the one after that), but this was just aggravating. Just do it like in the OT where Luke's father is mentioned maybe two or three times before the reveal. Here it was constantly: "I'm waiting for my family" "WHAT GIRL?!" "WHO'S THE GIRL?!" *flashback that reveals nothing* "Stop waiting on Jakku for something that will never come" "It calls to you like it called to Luke and his father". Goddammit, just reveal what you have to reveal already, film!

It's all a red herring I hope.

Yeah I was kind of impressed how restrained they were with hints to Rey's family, but I also strongly suspect her of being a Skywalker.

Damn Disney must have hired the CIA to shut shit down. Most every audio and video link on the previous pages is now gone.

Can't shut down terrorists money networks around the globe, but can find bootleg Star Wars clips in a matter of hours.

tbf, it's not like links to ISIS' home page get posted and then reposted on every forum, board, blog, tumblr, Instagram page, and Youtube comment this side of the Mississippi though.

I don't understand some of you, being a Star Wars movie was exactly what you asked for, it's like a reboot for every generation, I think die hard fan have just unrealistic expectation for those movies...

We have everything you asked for, good characters, great story, good vilain, nostalgia, great CGI etc...

I think Ben overthrowing Snoke in a later movie is absolutely on the table. It was an early idea for this movie, even.

By overthrow I don't mean "throw over a railing" like a good guy would, I mean "fucking murder the bossman to become an even worse bossman" like a bad guy would.

To be honest for a moment I was almost convinced that Rey was going to turn out being Han and Leia's second child. Han seemed to take an almost instant liking to the idea of employing Rey to the fold, and the movie conspicuously cuts away the very moment Maz asks Han who Rey is.

I swear the same way VII has ANH stuff written all over it the same way I'll laugh if VIII goes the Empire route and pulls an "I am your brother" twist.

I don't know if it's because I need to see the whole movie for that scene to work, but just looking at it as it is....it seems cheesy.

It's stretched out for a little longer than it feels like it should be (and I like to think this is mostly because of the musical score) but it's a relatively effective moment since Luke pretty much looms in the background of the story as soon as the first sentence of the opening crawl. It becomes blatantly clear that the movie just isn't going to possibly fit in Luke in any significant capacity but after over 30 years of not having seen him in any cinematic capacity... there he is. The movie's premise was rooted in finding him, and at the end of it they manage that. What follows is clearly going to be a pretty huge deal.

I'm dead certain that music was this cue:

It was. Recognized it instantly.

I'm thinking Kylo Ren's parentage's early reveal and hints at Rey's parentage are made for a simple reason.

They didn't want to redo the left-fielder "i'm your father" moment from ESB. It has been done so much in fiction, and no doubt many kind of expected such thing for this film as well.
If people expect it too much, even if only semi-seriously, they will be like "Well, i knew it *shrug*" rather than "WHOAH!".

A non-spoilered moviegoer will be told about Kylo Ren's parentage early, leaving him thinking "Will Han confront his son? What will happen in that encounter?" Rather than being given a one-two punch (of reveal-kill) where they may not have time to absorb it fully.

And Rey's past. Kylo Ren's past is revealed directly, so re-using the same trick in the same film is kind of boring. I'm thinking they gave pretty strong and clear hints. They have some room for interpretation but i think ultimately most will think "She's Luke's daughter*", and they will be satisfied when it will be finally confirmed. "I was right! Yeah!".

*Speaking of that...
There's been suggestions that Rey's Luke's adopted daughter. Don't see any problem with that. Adopted or biological, no difference to me. Perhaps the Force lead Luke to find an orphan girl who is very Skywalker-ish in many ways, including strength in the Force, leading Luke to adopt her and not just train her.

One thing I was sort of unclear on was the relationship between the Resistance and the Republic.

Was the Resistance a military arm of the Republic or something? Because the First Order sort of talked about the Republic and their fleets being in the way of taking out the Resistance, but the Resistance struck me as a little more scrappy and underdog-ish than a direct military arm of a galactic government might be.

I mentioned that I had tickets for Friday morning and couldn't use them, but I was able to get time to see it at 6:20PM Friday. I'm working like 22 hours Saturday and almost as long Sunday so that was a relief.

Yes. You are correct. The New Republic didn't want to combat the first order. So Leia says fuck you and does it herself.

The Republic and the First Order probably have a non-aggression treaty or some such. And the Resistance probably operates within the First Order territory. So it is a proxy-war, kind of. The First Order is aware but can't do anything in public, or unwilling at least. Until the search for Skywalker pushes their hand.

EDIT And i'm probably wrong. The Resistance being Leia's thing makes sense. Doesn't explain why the First Order isn't warring against the Republic right away though... is it because they don't actually have strength to that without the finished Starkiller?

It doesn't really do as much hinting as you think. I'm actually surprised everyone is assuming she's a Skywalker. Even if she is, it wouldn't have made much sense within the structure of the movie to include that kind of reveal.

I think she was trained by luke and put into hiding when kylo turned and he went into exile. I'm not convinced she's a skywalker
'Related' doesn't necessarily mean that she's literally a Skywalker, Leia should've recognized/felt her if this was the case. She could be Luke's foster child though. She's definitely not trained by Luke since the flashback in Maz's basement showed her being left on a very young age.

Seriously, though, lightsabers are underpowered AF. They don't even cut as well as a dull regular sword, otherwise Kylo would be deader than Han.

The main positive of the movie is how they made the good guys play off each others. John Boyega and Finn is terrific, absolutely loved his scenes with Poe in the beginning and with Rey and Han later on. Chewbacca made the theater laugh quite a few times. (the loudest laugh was caused by C3PO though)

Don't really got into the villains though. The First Order is almost literally the NSDAP, Phasma seemed like a joke character, Kylo 'Ben' Ren felt Hayden Christensen-esque and Snoke is a real stupid name. And why oh why did they bring the Death Star back?
