Oh wow you picked up on the Nazi thing with Hux? It was soooooooo subtle
You realize the imperials have always been space Nazis, right?

Snoke better be an actual giant
yeah dude, i'm not saying you're being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian, but i'm quite sure you're not exactly ... right, eitherPadme is a rational and compassionate young woman with a fierce belief in the importance of democracy and fair governance. She stringently debates and opposes anyone who argues for potentially dangerous compromises in those principles, or who would use well-intentioned systems to gain personal power. Unfortunately, she's also naive and somewhat easily led, making her vulnerable to both the manipulations of Senator Palpatine and unable to see the darkness growing inside Anakin until it's too late. She believes that there is a diplomatic solution to every problem, that the best way of obtaining justice is to work within existing legal channels. Unfortunately, since her enemies do not respect the same rules she does, she is often overtaken by them. She is nevertheless brave and willing to fight for her cause when need be, sometimes recklessly if it means putting herself in harm's way.
Anakin is a young man who shares Padme's almost obsessive questing for an ideal, but finds himself fiercely conflicted when he or those around him fail to live up to those standards. Like Padme, he's also compassionate, but where that compassion inspires determination in her, it inspires anger in him, leading him down dangerous paths and into the hands of Palpatine. Having been told he is the chosen one since he was a boy and gifted with extremely potent force powers, he has a strong ego which he struggles to control, a weakness he is well aware of and angry at his inability to overcome. Where Padme sees diplomacy as the best way to achieve peace, Anakin - having grown up in a desolate and poverty-ridden corner of the galaxy which the Republic showed little interest in helping - believes sometimes bad things need to be in order to achieve a greater good, that the corrupt and evil cannot be defeated by talking. His relationships mean a lot to him and he puts a great deal of trust in a small number of confidantes (Padme, Palpatine, Obi Wan), magnifying his anger when he feels betrayed by them, or when he believes he has let them down, as in his inability to save his mother.
Even taking into account that Padme and Anakin had three films across which to develop and Rey's only had one, I maintain that, regardless of the performances (and indeed, for the prequels, the dialogue), the new characters in Force Awakens are considerably blander, less flawed and complex, than the key players (Anakin, Obi Wan, Palpatine, Padme) in the prequels.
I guess I just found the Hux speech scene a little too much, none of the other movies went quite that far with the Nazi thing.
it's a movie, relationships are kinda condensed. ANH wasn't any better in that regard. Luke was super mopey about losing his mentor (who had been a mentor to him for a few hours, only). Luke was super bummed about Han not being a good bro and joining the rebellion / attack on the death star, even though he met him half a day ago.
I don't mind some people having higher standards than this film can meet, but i wonder if those are standards that even the OT would have been able to meet.
also, you claimed they were in love, which i pointed out that there was no indication (at least on Rey's side) that they were, which makes your judgement of the believability of their relationship somewhat doubtful, seeing as you can't even tell when 2 people are in love and when they are simply very good friends, no offense.
It's a different entity. The Empire was a continuation of the Republic with a dictator running the show. The New Order seems to be something a lot fiercer. Made up of the more fanatical elements of the Empire I guess.
Just come back. Not perfect, but perfectly enjoyable. First time I've heard people clap in theater (in Germany).
As I said in the other thread, I liked it a lot.
It felt a lot like IV as in everything was similar, but still enjoyed it. I liked the two main characters and their dynamic. And BB-8 of course.
But killing Han Solo, why :'(
Can't wait for another studio to buy LucasFilm and re do an another VII VIII IX continuity with him alive
Oh and Kylo Ren is a little laughable without his mask on.
?
They can be friends, enemies, chess buddies... I dont care.
I just did not believe the depth of their affection for each other looking at the time they had together.
It was not EARNED in my opinion. Not enough time in this packed film for those two to actually have a conversation.
Hey buddy, I love my friends! And I really love my friends when I'm willing to run into a crazy octopus monster or break into the ONE place I never wanted to return to (the HQ of the first order). Jeez, the guy wanted to escape to the outer Rim 10 min earlier. I also love eating pizza by the way. Lots of love to go around!
yeah, the new order isn't the empire. They're a fanatic right wing splinter group, an armed militia. They're not currently the rulers of the republic, right?
They have to resort to propaganda tactics, because they're in no position of power to "rule by fear" yet.
I think they had one, that's why they had to exit lightspeed so close to the surface.First thing on these planets to do list should be investing in a planet wide energy shield, I mean damn. How could you overlook them building a planet spanning super weapon, didn't Alderaan tell them anything?
Yeah Kylo Ren was awesome. Lots of people complaining that he should have kept his mask on, but it's the moment he takes his mask off he goes from "boring Darth Vader imitation" to an actual good villain you want to learn more about.Just got back from the movie and...WOW. just wow. Kylo Ren is an amazing villian IMO..
that lightsaber duel was simply brutal. different than the other films..I liked it.
Yep I felt like that too. It's just funny because even if it was intentional to draw so many parrallels between IV and VII, I think that making the main villain masked all the way through the new trilogy would feel way too similar to Vader, so they decided to unmask him in the second half of the movie.I thought that was the point - Kylo is a little manchild. He's basically Anakin Skywalker WITHOUT the tragic background... dude had loving parents, and turned into a little bitch because he jacks it to his Grandads space helmet.
The american invasion never ended.
Yup. Like I've said, the script is the thing that brings it down. On a filmmaking level I loved it, though. Remember when BobbyRoberts was saying there's no reason JJ and Kasdan need another six months when ESB's production was done in the same time?
Those six months could have been crucial for the film, instead of shooting based on a completely re-written script handed in 2 weeks before cameras started rolling.
they did somehow manage to turn a planet into a death star without anyone noticing, apparently. This new republic must have really sucked at their job

someone from the skywalker family, some would argue (which i think, right now, is grasping at straws)
what i do agree with, after my 2nd viewing, is that the visions Rey has when touching Luke's sword, look more like memories to me.
So she might have very well been the only surviving student of 'Camp Luke'.
that, to me, still doesn't mean she's necessarily any currently named character's daughter.

Luke created her from midichlorians. He learned from Ghost Sheev!

Do you think Luke was bathing himself when the Starkiller blew up all those planets?
You've got to remember that light speed trips in SW universe aren't as fast as they appeared movie and that just because what we see on screen is happening isn't EVERY second of their lives.
This is what happens in movies man, characters develop deep relationships within the space of (usually) two hours....
BTW I find the title of this thread kinda funny, as literally nothing I read several months ago in the "rumor" thread came to be true.
He was jerkin it to wookie porn. Using the force, indeed.
I don't think more time for writing would have solved all these script criticisms considering they're consistently present in most Abrams movies.Heh.
Abrams does a good job at making this look like a Star Wars movie, whatever that means, and the actors do a good job. Nobody does awful. Harrison Ford lost his spark ages ago though.
But yeah I really thought for some reason that Lucasfilm/Disney wouldn't start production until they absolutely nailed the script, given the importance of the movie. I guess "not a disaster" was all they were looking for.
Where is Starkiller base in relation to everywhere else? didn't seem like the resistance had much of a clue about their inner workings. Some development on the Order was something I would have liked to be honest they were a bit glossed over.
The Force Awakens using Dark Souls storytelling.
I'm glad everyone gets all their stuff from it. I think I'm ruined by slower storytelling or at least I forgot to switch to "breezy popcorn mode" before entering the theater.
I'd assume you need a shitload of resources to construct something like that, there should be an extensive spy network that monitors suspicious activities in all sectors. And they must have had someone to keep an eye on the remaining Empire splinter forces and what they're up to, even if it happened in a part of the galaxy that is still fully under their control
Fliesen got a good point there though, I suppose. Still, at this technology level, you'd expect some highly advance surveillance and espionage tools
something I've forgotten to say about Kylo is that I love the fact that he's a dark force user that is tempted by the light side, for a change. Something inherently funny about it
and what activated R2 anyway?
the whole plot with the map was a bit weird, wasn't it?
not the idea in theory but how the movie presented it.
I understand all kinds of audiences need to understand that the map needs two parts, but what we got was that BB8's part of the map was like a chunk of about 20% of the whole galaxy, how could they not tell where that would be? that must be millions of known systems, or are we supposed to believe that that BB8s chunk was completely uncharted?

Sobstarkiller planet sucks energy out of the sun, destroys the whole system....then what? The planet is abandoned or does it move like a ship? If not then that's one shit weapon to have just to destroy planets at once...rather just have one deathstar that individually destroys planets.
Because the starkiller planet that destroyed the planets at first wasn't really in the same system as the one at the end of the movie now was it? Cause there was still a sun to suck energy out of and planets to destroy.

maybe R2 surfed the internet the whole time and when he read the breaking news on the frontpage of the courscant courier that starkiller base was destroyed it would be chill for luke to be found.

It moves and it can kill things at intersolar distances.
...The smuggler quabble with han getting the falcon didn't really need to happen. We could have just left it at "we've been tracking the falcon" that didn't need to be a thing....
...there was no sense of urgency with the finale like there was in episode 4....
that's the important part.
Intersolar is nice and all, but the 2nd time the weapon powered up it seemed to have consumed the sun in its entirety, hasn't it? That's not a big magazine, really.
