Call me crazy, but I swear the middle especially the scene with the rival gangs and Han felt if anything like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Does anyone else see this or am I crazy?

I was definitely getting those vibes, but then again GotG takes a lot of its cues from Star Wars.

You know, I like Episode 3 so I appreciate you posting this just so I could understand how ridiculously not better than TFA I know it to be.

Episode 3 contains this scene (as it appears in the script):

"PADME stands in the balcony brushing her hair. ANAKIN leans against the wall, watching her lovingly.

ANAKIN: . . . every second I was thinking of you. Protecting the endless, nameless Outer Rim settlements became a torture . . . the battles were easy, the longing became unbearable . . . I've never been so happy as I am at this moment.

PADME: Annie, I want to have our baby back home on Naboo. We could go to the lake country where no one would know . . . where we would be safe. I could go early-and fix up the baby's room. I know the perfect spot, right by the gardens.

ANAKIN: You are so beautiful!

PADME: It's only because I'm so in love . . .

ANAKIN: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.

PADME: So love has blinded you?

ANAKIN: Well, that's not exactly what I meant . . .

PADME: But it's probably true!

They laugh."

And we all laugh.with them. That scene is Grade-A Embarrassing Celluloid and nothing that remotely approaches the depths of its inanity exists in The Force Awakens. You have helped me to understand the yawning chasm that is the difference in quality between the two films. You are wrong, and the universe will remember you in your wrongness.

All while they've made up Natalie Portman to look like a crazy woman for some reason. Seriously she looked unhinged in that scene.

How do you make that beautiful a woman look like female Renfield?

You guys do realise that the next star wars movies (8 and 9) will be horribly inadequate in comparison when it comes to lightsaber duels right? Brace yourselves hard.
Some of you already forgetting what a let down Looper is. When was the last time you rewatched Looper for the action sequences? And don't get me started on that dude from Jurrasic world making episode 9. He can't even make a decent fucking blockbuster movie. It's all downhill from here.
Doesn't that depend more on the fight choreographers? If the Raid guys are involved, we should be fine

That scene with the Final Fantasy-esque Marlboro's was the only one that made me roll my eyes just a little bit lol.

Man I fucking loved it. The new heroes are all so damn likable. The plot was simple, but that's all we need to introduce us to this new era of the universe that we've been thrust into, and I can't wait to see where they take the characters.

I'm a huge JJ fan, but I still didn't know if he could pull it off. He absolutely did.

Now I want to read the early speculation thread to see what people thought was going to happen and what got leaked - I know it was quite a lot!

Yeah Phasma got fucking robbed. Like its great that she's apparently got a larger role in 8 but my god they could've had her do something remotely intimidating or cool to make me want to see more or her beyond "she looks cool"

So two questions.

1. Why isn't JJ Abrams directing the second? Really not as confident in Rian Johnson as I was JJ.

2. Was the script for VIII decided alongside the script for TFA, or was it completely up to Rian to go with whatever direction he wanted?

I liked the movie, alot, but I just want to voice how much it pisses me off that people find joy in spoiling movies like this for people. I had Han's death spoiled for me thanks to the internet, and while knowing that ahead of time didn't detract from my enjoyment, I wish I could have gone into that scene wondering what was going to happen.

People who spoil stuff on purpose are infuriating.

I loved how Kylo kept punching the side of his stomach during the fight scene, that shit looked super cool.

His slav squat before interrogated Rey looked awesome, too.

Kylo Ren is a really effective villain. He's basically Anakin from the prequels done right, which is amazing because we aren't actually told a whole lot about him. We can easily infer what kind of person he is and what his strengths and weaknesses of character are just from watching him operate. His scene with Han on the bridge had more emotion and characterization than Anakin did in all three of the prequel movies.

Ren to me is one of the few parts of the movie where lack of explanation was done right. He is obviously a paralell to Vader, a character who after the first three movies we still knew very little about his past and it works. All the movie needed to tell me was that he was Han and Leia's son, that Luked trained him and other Jedis, and that he killed all of those Jedi and turned to the Dark Side. I was able in my own head to fill in the gaps of how that all must have played out and honestly don't need any flashback showing this.

In my head he must have grown up being told he was special while knowing he had this power, momma Leia was probably busy a lot of the time with Republic stuff and didn't have much time for him along with daddy Han. Still, they probably expected a lot from him especially with his powers. Eventually, they ship him off to train with Luke since they can't control or understand exactly what he is going through and he thinks he might finally be able to be with someone who understands him. However, Luke as a new Master probably treated him like the rest of the new students instead of his nephew and maybe was even harder on him because he new his potential.

In turn, Ren probably grew resentful and impatient at his training, just like Luke, and perhaps suspected that Luke was holding him back. Ultimately, he succumbs to his quest for power which he believes Luke is withholding from him and demonstrates that he is more powerful than the rest by killing all the other Jedi students before fleeing to the First Order.

I got all that in my head without the need for any flashbacks. Unfortunately, the rest of the unanswered/open ended stuff isn't so well handled.

im assuming the next 2 movies are gonna be similar to 5 and 6 at this rate. hopefully they take some liberties but the movie was better than it needed to be . I like the cheesy predictability

That was the one scene I didn't like, it felt weird and out of place. The wild CG monsters didn't have the weight all the other creatures in the film did (including CG ones). It felt like Star Trek 09 or something.

Again, no one is saying a word about this. We really dont even know how much control the first order has, or how much control that the republic has. This is a huge piece missing from this movie, and honestly you can say that they can hold it off till episode 8, but I disagree. When you watched episode 4, you knew the Empire was in asbsolute control, when you watched episode 1, you knew the Republic was in control.

This movie left me feeling completely lost in this aspect, they absolutely failed to display any sort of picture of who exactly is running the show now. If anything, it appears that the first order is weaker than the republic, and more or less just a small political party trying to get its way.

Whats been mostly established is the Republic eventually wins the war and the empire surrenders. However significant portions of the Empire flee to the unknown regions where Palpatine and crew had apparently been doing stuff.

Mon Mothma restores the Republic to Pre-Palpatine days ending the Emergency Powers of the Chancellorship and bringing the Republic back to the days where each system was in charge of its own defenses. The Republic kept a token Fleet. Leia and elements within the Republic were less than thrilled with that and created the resistance.

Fast forward and you have a Republic trying to keep the peace while elements within it fight the First Order.

Han and Leia's kid being named "Ben" was main callback that really got to me. So good.

And wait, was there not a Wilhelm scream? It just occurred to me. It'd be odd if that were the one thing they held back on lol.

As far as rankings go,
IV > V > VI or VII, I need a second viewing > III > I > II

As far as I am aware Kasdan is the mastermind. JJ helped with the first movie and setting up the world and where the story would go. But beyond what is written, it is entirely up to the next directors to do what they want to do. I hope Disney's iron grip is hard on this one so they stay as close as possible to what Kasdan and Abrams brought.

It was during Poe and Finn's escape

Am I crazy or did anyone else secretly hope that the rest of the OT cast (Leia, C3PO, R2D2, Han, Chewbacca) were killed off except for Luke?

1. I don't remember the exact reason, but I do know that working on a film on this level is fucking tiring and exhausting for years on end. And with how close the two films are on the release schedule, JJ would have zero break between the two and that's not something any sane human being wants to sign up for.

2. IIRC, the whole trilogy was planned out in advance. Maybe not the exact scripts, but the major plot points are already decided upon.

I agree with some other posters here, the status of the Republic/First Order/Rebellion and how they operate within and around each other is a HUGE hole in the flow of this movie. I kept waiting for some background and never got any and it still nags at me

Guys help me. Despite my best efforts and using the restroom before the movie started I had[/] to take a bathroom break during the movie. Meaning I missed most of the interrogation scene with Kylo Ren. I came back in to find Rey calling out Ren on being afraid that he'll never be as powerful of Vader.

What transpired before? Does it at all explain her meteoric rise in Force proficiency?

While I agree with you

"as long as there's still light..."

is PT level dialogue.
