You don't see a difference between the innocent villagers and the people who just murdered them?

It's weird to have the focus kinda be "stormtroopers are people too" and then it slowly morph into "actually just this stormtrooper who kills all the other stormtroopers without a second thought"

jesus christ was kylo a fucking dweeb though. i guess he was meant to come across as an angsty jedi teen or something but man he had no presence masked and he lost all pretense at it when unmasked. whiny snape dark jedi was my immediate gut reaction

The Sith were an order. So while a Sith is a Dark Jedi, a Dark Jedi is not always a Sith, merely a Jedi who uses the Dark Side. I have no idea if this is canon though.

Correct. Also additionally, before they were an order they were also an alien race/bloodline. And the sith order grew and was based off their teachings. Again not sure if this is still canon or not though.

Agreed. I thought they relied a little too much on the OT when it came to spaceships. X-wings and TIE Fighters again? Even Empire and Jedi introduced new ship designs.

Also I thought the sound design was lackluster, it lacked the unique punch of the other SW films, which had Ben Burtt as the sound designer.
Wasn't Ben Burtt also the sound designer on this one too?

To completely fuck the home team over with the shields lol. Terrible character.

Seriously why not make her the fight with Finn and the electric stick dude. They could have prefaced it with her shocking him earlier on when he took his helmet off

They executed the character by doing that. I know she's coming back but I hope she doesn't. Just a boring character.

It comes off as them scrambling to add her when shooting already began and that was the only spot they could fit her in

With Snoke only being shown as a hologram, it wouldn't be too late to re-design him for VIII and pass off the hologram as something as a cover right?

Because he looked fucking dreadful. Uninteresting with bad CG is a poor combination.

Nothing from the prequels carry over. Sith is mentioned once, and I bet it will never be mentioned again.

Sith has been around since before the prequels. I remember knowing that Darth Vader was a "Dark Lord of the Sith" when I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s.

Ben Burtt did the sound on this as well

And to top off my praise for Kylo Ren, his pounding the blood out of the wound in the final battle was fucking awesome in hindsight. At first it might seem sort of unintentionally comedic but it fit his gritty character. His departure from the film was also like Vader's in ANH; he sort of just becomes forcefully distanced from us in a semi-defeated state.

Also, do most people still think Snoke is Darth Plagueis? Snoke's bulbous look sort of reminded me of the art on Plagueis' Wookiepedia page.

thats the question. there are theories that snoke is darth plagueis the former master of darth sideous (evil emperor).

I feel it's not going to happen because I don't think they want to beholden to old villains, let alone a PT character, for this new era of Star Wars. I think Snoke is genuinely a new character.

Since I was on a black out for a long long loooong time I dont know some essential stuff regarding the trilogy:

1) Do they have a clear picture of where this Trilogy goes, story wise? Or are they making it up as they go?

2) Is there a writer that will be present for all three films, or is it different for each one?

I'm hoping there's an extended edition or DC that rectifies a lot of this shit. The movie honestly needed an extra 20minutes.

I don't feel Finn's heel turn is unsurprising, but the opening shot shows he had compassion for his crewmates; the numbering and stories that the stormtroopers were taken from birth and treated poorly made them more sympathetic. Cut to Finn manning the torpedo in the hangar bay while shouting "woohoo" while blasting the shit out of them, just felt a little jarring.

You know the Empire really really needs to stop making these giant death machines already; it's a waste of manpower and credits.

Kathy Kennedy's explicitly said she'll play a bigger role and that she'll be more important than Fett. Her role couldn't be much smaller though.

Yeah OK, I'll believe it when I see it, until then I'm sad to say my view of this character is there to sell merch cuz I won't deny that is a cool looking armor.

at this point it very well might be that snoke doesnt even use the force (although he said that he wants to finish the training of kylo ren.. he could have meant something else though)

Funniest scene in the movie.

Almost on the edge of what you could do humor wise without cheapening the main villain, but it worked..

Really great..

I loved the portrayal that storm troopers actually arent these mindless minions just made for killing they're buddies and just doing a job essentially with training and mild brain washing really great addition of depth.

So happy Ford is out!

He was pretty bad in 2D.

I thought he was fine, but at the end of the day I wasn't actively there to find fault in CGI I was actually there to take in the story and the film as a whole.

hmmm I agree that the existence of the resistance is a head scratccher but i dont see how it is a bad thing that they havent answered all the questions yet. there will be two other movies.

How is it a head scratcher? The opening crawl literally says "With Support from the Republic, General Leia Organs leads THE RESISTANCE." Which is then expounded on when Hux says something along the lines of "The lying Republuc secretly funding that Resistance."

It's clear they're an independent militia funded by the Republic.

They have the three films planned out this time, unlike the OT and PT (and you can tell by how confidently the films marches into cliffhangers for some characters). Lawrence Kasdan appears to be the one who spearheaded the overall story of the three (originally taken from a story treatment by Lucas, but Lucas said he doesn't think they're using much if any of it in their final story).
Kasdan and Abrams write the screenplay for this one. Rian Johnson is writing and directing Episode 8, and will write the story treatment for Episode 9.
We don't know who is writing the screenplay for 9 yet.

Saw the movie real late last night. I think the only gripe I have is that I wish Finn would have had Jedi powers too. Especially after his fight with Kylo and almost holding his own. I felt that the girl having it was kind of cliche I guess.

I feel like the exposition and world history in the film was purposefully kept vague in order for opportunities to explore it more in the EU products like books and such. Honestly, I'd buy a book even if it were solely about how Mas Kanada recovered Anakin's saber.

I also hope for more Poe in the future, EU or not. He was perfect whenever he was on screen, but when you realize he's gone for the majority of the movie, he really becomes the only character I wanted more from in the end. He's definitely deserving of a cool droid like BB-8.

The jedis are terrible teachers regarding discipline It seems. Ben is another one to go to the Dark Side even after all the battles Luke had against them.

I think people are forgetting that R2 comes online when Rey comes to the base for the first time. That could be an important piece of the puzzle.

How is it cliche? The central characters in each of the preceding trilogies have been male. The vast majority of Jedi, especially major character Jedi, have been male. Really, if Finn was the one to develop an affinity to the Force that would have been cliche.

so i was fucking in love right up until the moment where po goes 'so you talking or i talking' and then I realised... oh... i guess this is a new thing.

I dunno, they'd captured something so fucking perfectly up until then, and then there's just this scene here and there to remind you: this is Star Wars: new version. Which is cool, you know. It's definitely funny. But... man. It's different.

Oh well. Things change.

Much obliged.

Seems that there is a plan which is good, because yes the first movie pretty much left me with the same questions I entered the theater.

I am a little worried though that there is no common writer for all 3 films (even as an assisting writer).

Watched it yesterday with my gf and some friends. All of us really really liked it. I think it matched my expectations; a super solid ~8 out of 10, definitely reaching the heights of the OT at times.

I'd been reading some of the complaints here before watching it and some I agree with and some I didn't care too much about. I didn't mind Snoke's CGI, or Driver's face (lol), or that it was basically a rethread of ANH with some of the others mixed in (although I hope this means the trilogy will take its own direction from VIII onwards).

I think my biggest complaint, and I'm sure it's been pointed at already, was that the conversation between Han and Leia felt too "exposition-ish". It felt like the writers felt the need to re-state some facts we already had been told about or shown about Kylo and his background in a super bland manner and it just didn't feel genuine. They might as well have talked straight into the camera. No one who had been paying attention up to that point learnt anything new from that conversation either.

Anyway, a really entertaining and awesome-looking movie. Glad I had my gf watch the OT before this. She's loving the franchise.

Why does the Republic need to secretly fund a Resistance. Why can't they outwardly come out against The First Order?

You don't see a difference between the innocent villagers and the people who just murdered them?
yeah that's how resistance works, ever heard of ww2 ?
Innocent villagers vs soldiers who just massacred them. Definitely the same.

Stormtroopers were all stolen kids who were brainwashed and given a serial number instead of a name. Given a choice maybe some of them wanted to switch allegiances like Finn? Or go be scruffy nerf herders in the ass-end of the galaxy and have nothing to do with space politics and wars.

And what about all those independent contractors who were installing toilets on the Starkiller Base?

I ain't being that serious, brehs.

hmmm I agree that the existence of the resistance is a head scratccher but i dont see how it is a bad thing that they havent answered all the questions yet. there will be two other movies.

It was more like especially after reading some of the new EU novels like wtf is happening for me. Like why is it the resistance and not just the republic gearing back up? Why did they seem so small? Why did they have X wings and not A wings or B wings or Y wings? Why did the resistance have the rebellion logo? Where were all of the rest of the big ships for both sides? How did the first order have time to start stealing kids and grow up in just 30 years time?

I fully admit the main crux of this is more over arching canon issues vs issues with the specific hyper focused store in the movie.

yeah but the empire is gone and the new republic should be the legitimate authority instead of it. the rebels should be absorbed by the republic not exist beside it with unclear ties.

it doesnt make sense that the republic wouldnt try to make the rebels/ resistance their own official army rather than an inofficial thing that may oppose to them if they dont agree.

and what is the resistance resisting against. the first order? the first order just seems to be a remnant of the empire. is the first order and the republic somehow in a truce state (which may be the reason why the resistance that openly opposes the first order is only supported inofficially?)

its unclear what the whole political situation is and how the power distribution actually is.

Just watched it, it was pretty cool.

Only things i didn't like that much:

- Snoke looked bad (even if it's just a hologram)

- Rey seemed to be too good with the force - the mind control, the saber pull, etc. I guess they will probably brush it aside in the sequel by saying that she's the new chosen one / the most powerful jedi ever or something like that.

- Finn also seemed to be a bit too good at using the lightsaber (i'm not enough of a Star Wars connoisseur to know if it's canon for someone "normal" to be able to decently handle a lightsaber. Or maybe I missed some detail in the film that showed him as force sensitive as well?)
