[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens - It's True. All of it.

Looking back, the marketing was weird. Affective, obviously, but did not serve the movie well in some regards. If Phasma hadn't been built up, I don't think she would have been disappointment, but with the way they've been hyping her up I was super bummed out. Haha, I'm sure you spoiler guys have been aware of this months, though.

Actually, how much of this movie was a surprise for those of you that read spoilers?

Of all the "spoilers" I read, the only one that came true were the rumors of somebody dying, either Han or Chewie. But it's so telegraphed in the movie that I don't care. Then there were people saying Kylo Ren was a chump and even someone that didn't even have force powers, which I guess was only half-true in a way haha.

For me, the worst "spoiler" was the trailer showing the lightsaber confrontation between Finn and Kylo Ren. I kept waiting the entire movie for that to happen. At first, since they seemed to be in a forest at night, I thought it was gonna happen at the foresty planet. So when they left i was kinda annoyed LOL.

They really shouldn't have shown scenes from so near the end of the movie.

You mean that you find nothing funny. Everyone was laughing at those lines.

The OT was full of cheese, but this new film felt forced. Like you were mean't to laugh at them.

For me that is not what SW is about.

Fair enough if other people did laugh and enjoyed them. SW is so great that everyone has their own interpretations of what it was.

But for me, it was going for cheap laughs.

And I do say this as someone who really enjoyed the film. I am not someone who is stuck on a film made 40 years ago

Corrected facial proportions, fixed jaw line, altered lips shape, clearer eyes, Hair placed over the ears. Surface blur on the skin.
That's the corrections I see on the photoshop cover.

Adam+Driver+Tracks+Portraits+Toronto+vFjau12o96Ql.jpg

Good Lord, when I saw Adam Driver I couldn't help myself thinking how teenager he looks like. Probably on purpose, since he also acted in this Star Wars as an emotionally unstable and annoying kid that doesn't know how to control himself and doesn't distinguish between good and bad.

Even if Harrison Ford is now old, I couldn't help myself thinking how much of a pillar he has been in this series. It will be difficult to replace him.

I thought the new stuff, along with the inversions of old Star Wars plotlines were interesting - but they really should have spent more time fleshing out that stuff, and letting it breathe more.

I wanted to see more of Finn's backstory and transition from Stormtrooper to Try-hard Do-gooder. The character is fun, but it would have been nice to give him a little depth by trying to adjust to a different life. He just kind of walks away from his entire life like it was no big deal. This could have also been an opportunity to show more of the Empire's operations post-ROTJ/pre-TFA.

If the movie has an issue with pacing, its that character development and exposition gets hurried along so that there's more time to wank the fans with rehashed material. I could have easily done without the entire Starkiller Base thing. It was really boring to see that kind of thing happen for the third time in the series, and I would have much preferred seeing that screen time used to give the new characters a better foundation to move forward with.

Snoke looks too much like Voldemort.

Gollum and Voldermort's love child. They could have blurred him out, obscured his face with a cloak, or Dr. Craw'd him. You never know, they might redesign him for the next movie. It's not like the original old lady with chimpanzee eyes didn't change from Empire -> Jedi.

They took some ideas from the books and twisted them to be different. Kylo Ren = Jacen Solo for the most part, right down to some of his abilities and the Starkiller base being a moving planet were two of the big ones.

I did like that he was (presumably) named after Obi-Wan. That was really sweet. :)

nah..... I 100% disagree. If anything, I think "anakin using the force intelligently" was fucking ham-handed and god awful. easily EASILY the worst thing about TPM.

Abrams did the EXACT same thing with Rey, and did it 100000 times better.

Sure he did. Sure...

yup.

tonight's gonna be my 3rd time.

How often will you be able to watch a STAR WARS movie, a good(!) Star Wars movie, i wanna add, in cinemas?
I have a decently sized TV, but it's still different on the big screen.

Might as well make the most of the limited time it still feels magical.

by the time Episode IX hits, we'll have had 4 new Star Wars franchise films. That's not gonna be the same magic anymore.

It will be tough for future films to capture the magic I experienced last night. I just hope it doesn't go to potential fatigue like superhero movies are slowly getting to

They really shouldn't have made that "Hey guys we're using practical effects as much as we possibly can!" video.

It seemed like there was a ton of stuff that didn't need to be CG, but was. I don't know why any bipedal humanoid character needs to be CG, really. I guess it's not as bad as the prequels where you can tell the sets don't even exist and they were pasting heads onto CG bodies, but they leaned on CG almost as much as any other of today's blockbusters.

.

Kylo Ren was a minor surprise. He was just as petulant as Anakin Skywalker but without the baggage of the prequels. He seems to be very bad at lightsaber fights even if they were well choreographed.

Dude was shot in the gut with the most powerful handheld gun in the movie....

Cut him some slack.

Loved it. All of it.

Went last night at 8:50 and again this morning to 9:10. Both at Alamo Drafthouse. Which had an AMAZING preshow reel I wish they could stream out or something.

Ok, Rey may be a Skywalker or she may not, but either way it felt wrong to have a Star Wars movie without a acknowledging a "Skywalker" in it (and I don't mean just at the end). I'm sure GL had always said that Star Wars was about the Skywalkers.

Also, Luke not being in it felt totally out of character for him. Consider ESB, he had a premonition about Leia and Han and went to their rescue; are you telling me that he had no premonitions about Han, or that he did and decided to do nothing about it (the way Yoda and Obi-Wan always wanted) ?

Leia didn't seem really cut up about Han's death either. Fair enough I didn't expect her to run around like a headless chicken, but still...

Uh, dude. Leia and Kylo are skywalkers.

Care to give examples? The only notable CG creatures were those tentacle monsters.

which one is the song that plays during the battle at Maz' temple / bar. When the rebels arrive. That one's pretty nice, too.

Gonna convince my girlfriend to use one of the songs for her equestrian vaulting kids.

Oh...

Well, I looked those names up. Now I am afraid that Rey will be his twin sister.

They should be original.

Luke wanted to save his father, yet runs away and hides when his nephew turns to the dark side.

Luke failed and probably got his wife (Rey's mother) killed along with a bunch of kids under his tutelage. Dude is probably fucked in the head. He then took Rey to Jakku for the force priest to look after because of his completely loss of faith in himself.

Why are you constantly shitting on everything btw? It's coming off pretty trollish.

The jokes about Chewie's crossbow worked, but only if you don't give it much thought. In 30 years Han Solo has never tried out the crossbow, or even noticed its power?

Well maybe Chewie upgraded the crossbow lately with some crazy firepower. Dont care so much for such minir stuff.

I care much more as to why on earth should the bad guys repeat the same mistake with their base for the THIRD time... Seriously think of something else guys...

With Luke coming back and the continued development of Finn, Poe and Rey, this franchise has plenty of great characters left. Harrison was great in this one but I think this is pretty much what he had left in the tank. Glad they let the character be who he should be, a scoundrel. Never liked the thought of him settling into a role as "General" or some such.

I hope Luke still has some other Jedis with him, I will loose my shit if we see Luke's Jedi V Snoke's Sith.

This movie was an Odd feeling for me.

I kinda felt like the big reveals were not very big because of the EU, I can see why Disney had to erase the canon, because they practically rewrote a lot of it,

Unfortunately I felt that the EU books handled certain things better in relation to the overall plot of the offspring better than it came off in the movie,

This is definitely the star wars movie for the next generation, but its not for those who understand the EU lore.

Had i not known about certain plot elements from the novels, i feel this movie would be a lott better for me,

I am glad they didnt call Kylo Jacen, but i understand why they went with Ben even if thats really Lukes boy. #RIPMaraJade

Speaking of the saber, people say it's actually the ANH/ESB saber, right? How did anyone get that, exactly?

Bespin supposedly has a liquid core. Someone could have found it during a survey. Though, there's only a handful of people, no pun intended, that know about Luke's saber and his fight with Vader unless that eventually became part of the Skywalker myth.

It's the same saber. When Rey touches it, she has a flashback and kind of travels the history/memories of the saber. One of those places is the hallway on Cloud City.

This is so hyperbolic.

To be fair, the last line, while hyperbolic, holds plenty of truth to it.
The fact that i've heard people saying "well, yeah, the female protagonist is clearly a hunger games ripoff" is just baffling.

As if having a strong, independent female protagonist is some sort of 'trope' and not something that should happen in 50% of movies that don't require their protagonist to be male.

The contrast between ANH and TFA with regards to ethnic and gender representation is almost unbelievable.

I have said I loved the film.

But I am not gonna just gloss over what I believe to be its faults.

And I will speculate as you have. And that ius what I am enjoying, speculating on what we saw.

Be sure to read the upcoming book Maz Kanata fights Ugnauts on Bespin to get the lightsaber!

This was quite a bit of fun! Like for me there's a huge novelty of seeing a NEW Star Wars movie and not walking out the theater feeling confused and uncomfortable! This one kind of feels like THE VOYAGE HOME with a light narrative that has moments that the fans and normals can get behind. It feels like a good time to play it SAFE which is always the impression I had. JJ very much a good choice for the soft, safe first outing and makes weirdo Rian Johnston's movie all the more interesting.

Since the Bad Robot guys helped the Plinkett reviews to go viral, I always assumed JJ watched one or two of those reviews! This kinda confirms it? This movie has a better swordfight than any of the prequels mostly because it's all predicated on EMOTION and MOTIVATION! Rey thinks Kylo is a piece of shit because she has SUPER FORCE POWERS too and knows where he is ticklish which make him weak! Kylo either wants to kill her or bring her to Snoke because she is a threat to the Dark Side and also represents the good in him still!

But don't be expected to learn how Finn can use a saber ("there should have been a scene of Stormtroopers training with lightsabers," say bad people) or why the good guys and bad guys are renamed! Read that stuff in a fucking book!

Speaking of fucking books, it's tough to figure out what dangling threads they're saving for books and what's going to be explained in the next one. Maz's stuff will be explored in a book and probably in the Han Solo movie. I'm guessing Rey's parentage and her ABILITY TO BE REAL GOOD AT FORCE (my guess is she is a sleeper agent or had her mind wiped by Luke or some shit).

The movie I guess pleased both groups that either wanted Kylo to be a total tittybaby or a super badass. He's good at both! Vader was at his most threatening in ESB but he's also such a KWEEN! This takes it a step further and allows for some humor (Vader is also his funniest in ESB).

And when Kasdan bragged that no one in Star Wars is quite like Kylo, that's when I knew he made that fucker just to finally kill off Han. I feel like maybe Abrams hates Joss Whedon deaths? They REALLY spell out that Han is walking to his doom and I think it fits. His character was always on borrowed time, even when dealing with his own kid. And it's nice that Han left Leia because of their shitty millennial kid and not for GHOSTBUSTERS 2 reasons.

SNOKE was also one of these "guess I gotta read a fucking book" people. Like I guess we never know much about the Emperor in ROTJ either, but some explanation about how he's probably old as shit and has been waiting in the wings in the OT would have been nice. I was bummed that he was a hologram. He should always be a great large babyman!

I never read any of the EU stuff so there's little to no headcanon with what I thought would happen in an Episode VII. I first watched the movies around '95, so I guess I had 20 years to think about it. I'm certainly not disappointed! What made the prequels disappointing is that you just don't give a shit about what happens next, especially when your headcanon between movies is better than what you're given! During some FINN AND REY banter early on, I leaned to my adult woman partner and said, "Imagine if this shit was with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan."

So anyway, bring on ROGUE ONE. Between Daisy Ridley and Felicity Jones, the Force is certainly FRESH again *inhales*

Smh at the people who say TFA > ANH

Post again when you're sober

Recency Bias vs. Nostalgia.

Regardless, there's no "right" answer. People can have different opinions. But people should probably also wait until the dust settles before making strong declarations. I'm quite sure there are plenty of people that thought TPM was the "best Star Wars ever!" immediately after it came out.

Honestly I think this film has made me more curious for episode 8 so it really succeeded in that vain

I'm still hoping that they introduce Mara Jade as Rey's mother.
