No

plz retcon out midiclorians. So dumb -_-

opening scene of SWVIII - Luke and Rey quietly have a moment of rest in his cottage...

"Rey, I have something very important to tell you."

just when you think he's about to reveal that he's her father...

"Midi-chlorians are a microscopic lifeform that reside within all living cells and communicates with the Force."

To build that star fueled planet-size cannon they must have tons of money and the best engineers in the galaxy.

It gets crazy when you start wondering where the First Order got their resources. In the original trilogy it makes sense because the Empire has ruled for a while, but the First Order seemingly popped up in the last twenty years and managed to train a galactic army of indoctrinated Stormtroopers, as well as build a WMD the size of a planet without anyone noticing or trying to stop them. What was the Republic doing in all this? Don't they have their own standing fleet and not have to rely on funding an independent resistance?

Maybe Snoke is just really, really rich?

How is he better than PT Anakin ? I keep seeing this and I struggle to see how, the character would be a good fit for Anakin.

I just want to understand.

I can't really explain it, but Kylo is pretty much exactly what I thought Lucas was trying to go for with Anakin as he was making his transition to Vader, but either the script held Hayden back or Hayden held Hayden back..or both. The angst and lack of stability reminded me of Anakin so much from the last half of Episode 3, but Kylo wasn't anywhere near as cringeworthy, and even though they didn't show what drove Kylo away from the light side like they did Anakin, it (Kylo's full transition) even felt more believable in some ways. It was nearly perfect and how I imagine someone conflicted with the light and the dark would act.

Rey held out her hand at the end there for what seemed like an eternity. What was Luke doing? lol

He vanished and vowed not to ever come back. you really think he would change his mind in a split second so the girl wouldnt have to hold her hand out for longer than a few seconds?

Also, dramatic effect.

The only reason I would think she isn't his daughter (even if throughout I thought she was, him leaving her away from himself in case things go wrong), is that she is specifically left to the junkyard alien dude. I don't think Luke would do that. He would have left her with Leia or someone else, but not in that kind of place, unless it's basically "oh I knew the force would protect you" kind of copout.
Leia is a general in the war against the First Order. He's trying to keep Rey away from that stuff, especially since Kylo is an opponent.

Not sure if this is a great comparison but look at Germany between WW1 and WW2.

I wonder if the First Order is an actual government that controls planets or if they are just on the Starkiller planet. The movie doesn't really say either way.

They are fucked if they are only on Starkiller.

*Luke farts*

Messa make a stinkia.

Uh, other than being outside of typical SW conventions, what's wrong with helicopter shots? TFA was probably shot better than all SW films outside of ESB and ANH.

Yes, overall aside from too many fast moving camera shot and too many close-ups the film is very well shot, probably not as good as ESB but I think even better than ANH.

But that last shot is bad for many reasons. It's a very unclear shot detail-wise. The effect of the spinning on the surrounding water and rock makes everything look grainy and hard to make out. The spinning is also distracting and doesn't successfully isolate the 2 characters it's trying to frame. It's outside the conventions of Star Wars, as you say. The framing is bad as well. The characters seem nearly center but also jitter in the frame irrc. All previous Star Wars films end on a static shot which at least communicates an end of sorts (even an unresolved end).

So, is there any reason that planet WASN'T Coruscant, other than "prequels are bad?"

The Visual Guide says that the New Republic changes capitals every few years, I think something along the lines to not make one system so powerful or something like that

Only a year and a half!

we get Rouge One before then. It's a good time for Star Wars.

Guess 1.5 years ain't bad...

For real. He basically led the read through. Someone's gotta do all that stuff at table reads. He did it for that one.

Fantastic.

People are expecting it. Their forum is filled up with people creating accounts and talking about how much they hated the film. They might end up actually liking it. Hopefully, they'll put up a Half in the Bag before the holidays talking about it.

Palpatine's behind it all.

yoda settled that in the OT, the dark side is easier, faster, you get powerful without much effort. it's tempting, but it corrupts you.
you don't really need more than that, certainly not PT anakin who was tricked instead of seduced or tempted with power.

as for grey sith, I think Kylo might explore that more in the ST

That makes it sound so pathetic, though. The Dark Side should be the failings of men who've had noble cause, so to speak. If it corrupts you, show us the conflict. Force the audience to be torn between the two.

My prediction is they'll rip the movie a new one for paralleling A New Hope so much but at the same time acknowledge it was pretty well done. They still liked Star Trek 2009 even though it rode heavily on some nostalgia and familiarity.

So when I saw the ending to ROTJ during the marathon event, when Palpatine gets thrown by Vader, the only thing that was going through my mind was "what if he learned how to cheat death?" Yesterday wasn't the first time I saw ROTS, but I always forget about the whole Darth Plagueis story and not once bothered to think of it past the two minute scene and whether or not it had any relevancy to anything in regards to the main films. But after talking about it, reading stuff itt, and finally listening to the Snoke track from TFA score and Palpatine's Teachings from the ROTS back to back, there's no denying that Snoke is in deed Plaguies.

And that to me is a bigger shocker than Han Solo dying. And now I really want to see Episode 8.

So, is there any reason that planet WASN'T Coruscant, other than "prequels are bad?"

The original Republic fell on Coruscant, it was also the seat of the Empire for many decades. I'm guessing the Republic wanted to rule from somewhere else with their fresh start instead of just doing everything the way it was before.

We don't really know how big an organisation the First Order is. From what we were shown in the movie, they seemed to be a much smaller force than the Empire, they skulk around the Outer Rim and are more of a growing threat than a major force in the galaxy. If there is one thing the movie needed it was a bit more clarity regarding the state of the galaxy at large, it was hard to understand the significance of them destroying that solar system.

Sure, he's still leaving her with basically a slaver, almost. I can't imagine they would be any legit reason to write this way instead of her being left with somewhat normal people, even if they live in a harsh environment and have to sell junk to get by.

So now that I'm posting in the right thread, can we all agree that the final shot is horrendous and possibly, most likely, the worst final shot of all 7 Star Wars films simply in terms of cinematography? A spinning helicopter shot? In 2015? In a Star Wars film? It was ridiculously bad to me.

Yup, looked baddiebad

Yeah, add me to the list of folks that wanted a bigger space battle. I love me some capital ships. Hopefully we get one by the end of the trilogy, but with how weak the two factions seem to be. I don't know.

I imagine it would be the equivalent of Hilter nuking London in 1939 instead of invading Poland. A burgeoning force coming out in very very big way

How you know it wasn't coruscant for sure?

Because it's in a supplemental text book that you can buy today after the movie came out.

Behind the scenesEdit

Hosnian Prime briefly appeared in the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[2] Information about the planet and its status within the New Republic was elaborated upon in the reference book Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary.[1]

Anyone claiming that the movie 100% makes it clear is reading too much into the movie. 5 planets were destroyed in the movie. They barely talk about them. They're the center of government in the New Republic (a role held by Coruscant previously). They do not list the 5 planets names. One of the pictures they gave of the planets could've definitely been Coruscant. You have to have extra-movie knowledge to be 100% sure it's not Coruscant.

Oh shit

Pretty much. Disney are sneaky bastards for getting us all intrigued about Star Wars again, now that all comics, books, etc are canon people will be hoovering them up like never before. Unlike under Lucas, the EU will actually matter now.

Yep.

I'm willing to bet both sides are going to be bulking up in a hurry now that the shot heard round the galaxy has been fired.

I wouldn't be too concerned about getting a big cap ship battle at some point.
