A lot of people in my theater seemed audibly surprised when Kylo Ren took his mask off and it wasn't a known character. Did people expect him to be Luke or C3PO or something?

My audience was great.. got whoops and hollers, cheered for over a minute for both Han, Leia, C3P0. Responded excellently to all of the humor. During Han's death, you could actually hear tons of people gasping and few people whispering "no." And then they really came to life during that lightsaber duel when Rey picks it up. They went insane there.

As soon as the mask came off, I looked at the character as a weak frail person instead of scary and strong. Was really disappointed.
I think that's the point. At the end it's mentioned he is to continue his training. His growth in power will be a huge focus over the next two movies. I can't wait to see that develop.

Was that whole movie just a shot for shot remake of Episode IV or what? Felt like I was watching the exact same thing.

Yep. Disney playing it as safe as fuck itself to make sure fans don't reject it like they did with the PT. I don't mind it, because the movie is good and the characters were great!

I didn't mind her using it to grab the lightsaber, but yeah, the mind trick felt a bit forced. Like, it's the only time a mind trick is used the whole movie. Why would she know the force can do that?
Well... because it was attempted to be used on her the very scene before that?

I thought Rey cut Kylo's fucking head off for a second in that final duel. I almost shit my pants.

I thought for a moment she would slice off his entire right arm to the shoulder. I was waiting for it. Then with the way it was cut, I thought he maybe lost a hand.

I think the look Luke gave Rey might have been because he was terrified that she found him. Not because she is his daughter but because he knows how powerful she could become and after losing his own nephew to the darkside, he didnt trust himself enough to be able to guide her down the path of light. Her turning to the darkside could be way worse than Kylo turning. That could explain his expression and she could very well have no relation to him outside of being her caretaker at some point. I like the idea that her father may have been one of the Knights of Ren or something and Luke had killed him in the past and took her under his wing. Her learning that and turning against him could be pretty bad for everyone. So he dumped her on some remote planet hoping that she never learns her heritage.

I think they should have shortened that scene and had him keep the mask on until the Han part. Would have made that more impactful.
True, but I really liked what his unmasking brought to the Rey scene. Apart from anything else, it works on the level of pitting the two rivals face to face, before they lock sabers.

Earlier, another poster pointed out that Rey was aware of the "legend" (or was it the myth?) of the Jedi. She was basically like "This feels lame, but what the hell, let me try that mind trick I heard about."

No, there is nowhere near enough evidence in the film to make that conjecture. This feels like EU type explanations where people flesh out underdeveloped elements. It's especially apparent as that is the only 'old' skill that she actively uses besides the basic Force push/pull.

The Han kill was anything but shocking. The framing, all of the characters inexplicably putting down there guns to watch the confrontation,...c'mon, you've seen movies before, right?

My girlfriend said at the beginning of the scrne that Ren was going to kill Han, and I was like no way. But when they both walked onto the ominous bridge with dark red lighting and foreboding framing, I was like "yup". That's the kind of walkway that when two people confront on it, only one gets off.

I really like Kylo. He isn't some imposing villain like Vader or Maul.

He is just weird, and awkward and the more I think about it, the more I like him.

I feel bad for the next director that has to step up to the plate after JJ.

The next director, Rian Johnson, directed one of the best episodes in all of television with the Breaking Bad "Ozymandias" episode. He also directed Brick and Looper, which I thought were pretty good. JJ did a good job of setting things up for the next movie. What I have a question mark about is the Episode IX director: Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World director).

Oh, my friend and I couldn't recall it correctly. Did they say Luke was training one or two people before shit hit the fan with Ren?

He had started a new Jedi Academy, so it was at least a few people. The vision that Rey had of the day of the betrayal shows something like 5-8 Knights of Ren conducting the attack, so I'd assume there is at least that many trainees at Luke's Academy.

Wow, Rey is a REALLY powerful Jedi for somebody who seemingly got no formal training.

Mind manipulation, resisting the influence of a dark Jedi trained by Luke Skywalker himself, and later beating said Jedi in a duel with relative ease. Granted, his head wasn't on straight at the time, but good lord she is powerful.

Hell, she seems better at this than pre-RotJ Luke.

Actually, there is. There's precedent for it in the OT, in fact, where everyone seems to regard the Jedi as magical figures of myth.

Have been able to find the time to see the film, but I'm worried the audience I'll be seeing it with won't react to the major surprises since they'll be repeat viewers by then. Phooey.

Yeah...about the whole "Obi-Wan had a daughter with a secret lover"

Unlikely (TCW Spoilers)
Ugh. I loved her too.

Part of me wants to agree because my main fucking man JJ did an astonishing job, but Rian Johnson was the man behind Looper. And Looper is awesome.

If anything, I feel bad about Colin Trevorrow (IX). He did Jurassic World and man that movie sucked ass.

BTW, saw this in non-3D today.. and they played the R-rated Deadpool trailer before... pretty shocking for my 8yr old and 10yr old to have to listen to that.

Anyone else have that?

My three year old wasn't present (at daycare) but I heard a few parents with kids in tow grumbling...also WTF with the Jungle a book trailer???? I saw a version of it that had bear necessities prominently featured that moved me to nostalgia but this one was so generic...Dismey needs to get a new finishing house.

I hope Colin get the boot in pre-production Disney/Wookies are known to do that。

Colin is only directing this time, doesn't have anything to do with the script/screenplay.

Just saw it again and yup, still just as good. This may be one of the most rewatchable movies I've ever seen. Even Mad Max didn't give me this feeling on the second watch.

And now that I was ready for it, I guess the helicopter shot at the end wasn't terrible . It could've been done better, but it served it's purpose.

I enjoyed Looper very much and haven't seen Brick or watched Breaking Bad. I have always been concerned with the switching in and out of directors for continuing movies. Either the new director tries to continue the old director's vision or he creates a new one which can become jarring from one movie to the next.

I'm not saying I didn't think it would happen. But it's still shocking. Pretending you know everything about all movies isn't a fun way to live.

Exactly. I was hoping it wouldn't end like that but it was obvious from the way it was shot that he was going to kill Han. I knew the lack of handrails meant Han was going over the side after the old stabbaroo.

Her being so good at force was a bit to much, especially considering luke couldn't do shit in a new hope.

Actually, there is. There's precedent for it in the OT, in fact, where everyone seems to regard the Jedi as magical figures of myth.

That's very different than her knowing a specific Jedi trick despite them supposedly being legend to the extent that nobody knows if they existed. It's not established enough. It would be the exact same problem if she did a Force Choke.

Sure seemed like 'mind control/manipulation' to me. Seemed to make plenty of sense for her to make a connection that 'force powers can = mind control' to me.

He does the same thing to Poe and in Rey's case it's like he's invading her mind. If it was mind control, it's a very different type/method than how the Jedi use it and it's much closer to actual torture.

I really hope Rey ends up being Luke and Mara Jade's daughter. Her belt is fashioned after Mara's, and it gives me hope that they haven't erased her from canon.

Perhaps Ben killed her, which would echo how she died in the EU (killed by a Solo)

I didn't mind her using it to grab the lightsaber, but yeah, the mind trick felt a bit forced. Like, it's the only time a mind trick is used the whole movie. Why would she know the force can do that?

It's kind of established that she's a total fangirl over Jedis and the old Rebellion vs. the Empire - she knows about Luke Skywalker/Han Solo. It's not that much of a stretch for her to have heard rumors about what Jedi can do and deciding to try it herself.

Word, I must have missed the academy bit. But yeah, makes sense with the flashback that there were bodies everywhere.

Chewbacca always gets the short end of the stick in movie endings. He doesn't get a medal in A New Hope, and now he has to stay behind and tend the ship instead of going with Rey to say hi to Luke.

One of the best movie-going experiences because the audience was great! They clapped when the Lucasfilm logo appeared and laughed and clapped at all the right moments. When Kylo tells Finn to give him Luke's lightsaber and Finn replies with "come get it!" the audience lost their shit and then yelled when Finn got the first hit on him. Biggest pop was of course when Rey gets the lightsaber and when she defeats Kylo.

When the credits rolled everyone gave it a ovation and then one dude just gets up and starts yelling how "Abrams did it!!" and going on how good it was...to which then he got a ovation too! lol

I can't wait to see the film again but I hope and wish it's with that kind of audience again!
