2 other apparent details from the novel (not direct quotes):

- In the novel it says something about that when Kylo was a kid Snoke would follow him around and whisper things to him, and eventually brought him to the dark side

- The novel also alludes to snoke calling out to rey to kill kylo when she beats him right before the ground gives in. "Do it, kill him, quicker easier". I do not believe he was physically following kylo around, just in the back of his mind telling him to chose darkness.

Watched the film yesterday and thought it was average, the perfect 6/10 film. I didn't hate any scene like I did in the prequels but nothing really captured my imagination like the original trilogy often did. The last shot fell flat was a particular disappointment as they decided to shoot it on a well-known world heritage site instead of creating something captivating.

In The Clone Wars series, Obi-Wan did have an attraction to Satine, a Mandalorian politician/royalty.

Here's a thought. A dumb thought and not much of a theory. And only because of a rhyme (not thematically, but actually a rhyme). But what if Sabine from Star Wars Rebels (who wears Mandalorian armor) is the secret daughter of Satine and Obi-Wan. Then also, (though there's probably too much of an age difference) what if Ezra and Sabine eventually fall in love and Sabine gives birth to Rey. I suppose the timeline could maybe work out that way. Obviously they'd need to both be older than they currently are on the show (and survive at least until after Return of the Jedi).

And people, there's no hope for Kylo.. That dude is about that dark side life.. Even Vader wouldn't be able to murder his flesh and blood.

there's a chance he could be playing a real, really really long game here where his goal is to protect luke from snoke or something. maybe killing han is more of a thing to best keep up with appearances, making his death more of a sacrifice. maybe we are meant to look back at this film and see kylo ren as someone trying to keep the dark side from taking over completely instead of letting any good inside him (although... snoke can sense it or something even as a hologram, so maybe not). maybe that's one way of looking at his outbursts with the lightsaber.

So, is Finn also a force user? He uses the lightsaber on two separate occasions, once against a fucking dark jedi and he manages to not die instantly.

Do you guys think Han is really dead?

I actually do believe Finn has at least some affinity to the force. Kylo Ren immediately noticed him in the beginning, and he was somehow fixated on him, going so far as to learn his stormtrooper codename before Finn's action had even become relevant.

If i'm remembering correctly, doesn't the conversation where Snoke asks Kylo if he'd felt the awakening of the force, and Kylo confirms this, occur BEFORE Kylo has encountered Rey & witnessed her force powers (during the interrogation)? If so, I imagine Finn would've been one of those potential force users.

Then again, I am also someone who would love it if Finn turned out to be a descendant of Mace Windu, so this could just be fan-based speculation.

Should have been in the movie tbh.

Also how does Snoke know how things went down in the throne room? Unless they're going to hand wave it all away with he somehow knew through the Force.

I agree, that are too many ????????? about Ren and Snoke that a litte bit more could have helped the audience (us) get with it.

Many dislike Snoke already due to WTF is this guy?

they need to fix Snoke in the next movie, badly

So was Death Star 3 a two shot weapon, or does the sun regen, or can they vacuum suns that are further away?

I'm assuming they only used it now because they went into panic mode due to losing the droid. They know they're fucked if Luke is found. Hopefully they have some self reflection when choosing the next super weapon.

It's funny I really enjoyed this and I told my friends. One is a big EU guy and had bias over this the second it was announced so I wasn't expecting him to like it. He didn't, 6/10(which is absurd imo) his core reason being Kylo Ren. I haven't engaged him yet, but I can only imagine he got upset over the final fight. With him losing to Rey(hes super sexist). I just find it funny because two scenes are there to directly show why he lost to Finn and Rey. It wasn't because she's super powerful or anything(not that she wasn't, she clearly had some experience with her staff) its because he took a goddamned Bowcaster bolt to the chest and was bleeding out, on top of the inner turmoil.

Personally, I feel Kylo was the best part of the film. They want you to think Darth Vader 2.0 at first but as he character unfolds you see a tortured person fighting to stay in the path of Evil. He's essentially Reverse Luke in RotJ. He thinks killing Han will bring closure but it only pulls his mind deeper into chaos. Strong presence, strong writing, great character.

That ending was perfect too. So good. Great film.

If Rey is really meant to be seeing something someone else saw (if not herself), Ren saves her or that person's life. The guy with the mushroom hat is about to hit her with a stick, but then gets killed by Ren.

Some someone or some people wanted to kill Rey, and Ren didn't want her to be killed, if that is Rey herself.

I feel like those are moments seen through the perspective of the lightsaber and whoever Is holding it.

So it is not necessarily true that Ren is saving Rey, he might have saved Luke at sometime while it was in Lukes possession?

I don't see why they couldn't old age makeup Ewan McGregor to look like Alec Guiness. He doesn't need to show up as a suddenly younger version of Obi-wan Force ghost.

This. I thought Ewan looked like a young Alec in the PT anyway. Also, I'm all for an Obi Anthology, but I also want Han. I want to see when he met Chewie, when and how he obtained the Falcon, and some trouble making with young Lando. Plus it'll help ease my pain. I feel like I lost family in Han :(

You guys really like your art to be explicit. No need for a movie to spell out such ideas as free will, sentimentality, etc, with dialogue. Hard to digest, thinks the spectator is dumb. It's there, no need to have a character say it.

Stuff like this just really makes me think that Rey is a Skywalker too. Luke could have sensed or found out that Snoke was poking around Kylo at some point because he's a Skywalker, probably knowing his potential and wanting to lure him. Luke could have easily gotten her out of there to protect her at the first sign of that. It makes sense. I don't think they've ever stated Rey's or Kylo Ren's ages but I'm pretty sure she's a few years younger than him so it would match up, too. If Snoke began messing with Kylo when he was a kid, Rey would have been a wee lad still. Kind of matches up with the age she was when she left.

Oh wow. That would've been great.

The entire exchange seems a bit (more like ridiculously) on the nose to me... Exactly what you would find in a novelization. :P I don't think it would've sounded natural at all.

The lines may have been cut to facilitate having them as part of a bigger scene in the next movie. The edit could have happened after the book was finalized.

Novelizations usually add a lot of crap that's not in the movies.

this was because he didn't kill anyone when ordered to

People just need to take it slow. Did people get a feel for The Emperor in A New Hope? No. There is still 2 mainline movies. Explaination and character depth will come.

I would have sat in the theater for another 15 minutes if it meant adding some of these lines of dialogue into the movie.

Snoke telling Ren that the reason his grandfather failed is because he got sentimental adds to the bridge scene and it clears up the thought that ren is unaware that Anakin went back to the light.
Well, this makes me like Snoke some more. Let me buy the book then.

Both these things are freakin' creepy. I understand why they kept Snoke as a mystery villain in this one, but I assume we will start to see how he's been influencing things in the next movie.

This was something I understood already watching the movie one time. The symbolism and the specific wording of certain lines made this all pretty clear to me and I mentioned it earlier in the thread.

He's just praying. Darkside users can't communicate with Force Ghosts.

He looks up to Vader not Anakin. He feels the Darkside is more powerful and is the correct side of The Force. This is expressed when Kylo says he's "being seduced by The Light." So it would seem that he feels The Light is temptous and bad from his point of view. So Vader going to The Light at the end would mean that he fell for the seduction. A seduction that only succeeded when Vader's son tempted him with it.

This is precisely why Kylo kills Han. Han (or his family in general) are the greatest temptation for Kylo to go Lightside. Snoke even says as much. So Kylo thinks that he must not fall to his temptation and thinks he'll be free of it when he kills Han. Only to discover afterward that it's done nothing but make him feel even more conflicted and tumultuous.

Saw it twice. Liked it the first time, loved it the second time.

Couple things I noticed in the second viewing:

- Kylo Ren didnt have the side "blasters" on his lightsaber in the dream scene when Rey grabbed the lightsaber

- 3PO had two gold arms at the end of the movie

- That was definitely Daniel Craig as a stormtrooper!!

I think this, regardless of if she is a Skywalker or not, is why she got shoved on a planet, alone, and possibly with a memory wipe/force block.

Snoke is haunting/hunting young Jedi's and wrecking Luke's shit. He wanted to protect her. Hell, maybe he and Snoke have been battling mentally for decades.

I mean...those lines are pretty good, but they're also bullshit. If the Empire fell due to the Emperor's demise, then Vader's actions had little to do with it beyond Luke's survival. That Death Star was blowing up regardless of what happened in the throne room.

So ...

Rey = Katara/Aang
Finn = Sokka

Kylo Ren = Zuko

Snoke = Fire Lord Ozai

Poe ... = Momo/Appa??

I only mention this cause Kylo Ren gives me a serious Zuko vibe. (I don't believe this is how any of this will play out), although an Iroh like character from the dark side would be cool.

when I read the book it didnt come across to me that Snoke was speaking to Rey to kill Kylo. Seemed more like it was just her raw emotions and she shook it off. Being tempted by the dark side doesnt mean she was being tempted by Snoke necessarily.

If Ewan McGregor becomes a vital part of these new Star Wars movies I will bust a nut. Please let him be Rey's grandfather or something.

The PT could have used a character like Finn.

Really loved him.

"Why you wanna go back? You got a family back there? A boyfriend? A cute boyfriend?"

Showed up to the theater to watch this for the first time having nothing spoiled.

Taking a piss and a guy walks in with his son and loudly proclaims "Whar a surprise, Solo dead."

Fucking asshole; I said "hey thanks for ruining the movie" and the guy starts arguing with me kinda acting mad and I just said "asshole" and walk into the lobby. Dude comes out of the bathroom and shoves his finger in my face and starts threatening me over saying asshole in front of his son. I just said get out of my face repeatedly and he eventually left. Dude who violently approached me over one mile swear word In front of his son and had the nerve to say "it's only a movie" as he left.

I've seen a lot of people mention the memory wipe or force block as a theory but has that ever been done before in the Star Wars universe? It seems like it would be kind of a cop out if they first time they ever introduced it was to explain what happened to her. But it would make sense if it's not a new thing and has been done before.

lol is the voice behind the "QUIET GIRL!" the shopkeeper guy? Serious douchemove to leave her with that guy.

Also, she's even younger there than I remembered. I can't buy that she was jedi-trained already at that age and already a capable force user. p.s. spare me your pictures and gifs of padawans from the prequels.

The Emperor was controlling the battle through "force meditation" and part of the loss of battle was due to the death of the Emperor.

That said, it's definitely a single-sided view. That's the point, he's jacking Kylo up with lies.

I saw the movie... Its a solid B+/A-.

The movie was finally getting good and they and they had to end the movie.

It really felt like that they were setting everything up for the sequel.

I would really have liked :

-more explanation on the "new" Death Planet and it power.
-Ray's force ability and no back story to it. Kind of takes away from the movie
-Han Solo's death and Kylo Ren's not flinching...
-No backstory on Snoke and who he is and how he became the leader of the First Order.
-Lake of Luke except for last few minutes and no words.

The central message of the movie was if you turn to the dark side. You will become whinny literally and have anger issues.

It was the same with Darth Vader and Kylo Ren.

At least this didn't have corny dialogue compared to the prequels...

The good parts:

-Awesome lightsaber fights and no more of the crazy acrobatics like the prequels
-Great X wing and Tie fighter battles
-Finn, Rey, BB8 stole the show...

I would rank this:

4 > 5 > 7 > 6 > 3 > 1 > 2

Yep. I just wrote about that above too. It was easily the best part of the movie writing wise and (I thought at least) clearly conveyed.

The shopkeeper is Simon Pegg's character.

some people are so dumb. we had to walk past of line of people who hadnt seen it after our viewing and my friends start talking about the movie. i told them to shut up. i went in unspoiled and wouldnt wanna take anyones enjoyment out of it.

I wish they would've shown Hux rescuing Kylo.

We know it happened, but it's not shown and the planet explodes so rapidly.

Would have been cool to see Ren brought to Snoke and have Snoke say something to him about his training and have that intercut with Rey beginning her journey with Luke.

Yeah this is pretty interesting.

It's hard to tell from that gif if it REALLY is Snoke though. What if Rey is the daughter of someone that went off to train at Luke's academy and got slaughtered there, and that's what she's seeing in that vision?

What puzzles me is why someone tries to presumably kill Rey, and then she's saved by Ren. And it looks like Rey might be dropping a light saber.

If you imagine that in this vision Ren is actually Snoke, and Rey is actually Ren, then it would show someone wanting to club Ren to death (possibly for having killed everyone else), and being saved by Snoke and his knights.

I mean that would have been a pretty neat way to show us what happened to Ren and how Snoke got him.

Exactly. She obviously is able to tap into the force a lot easier than others probably because she's this new gen of force users.

Yeah I wouldn't have called him an asshole if he didn't immediately act pissed that I called him out for the spoiler. A lot of nerve on that guy; getting in my face with a cop standing right there he was lucky he wasn't arrested/

It was obviously because.

And reasons.

There are many parts in this movie were Abrams seems to throw his hands up in the air, exclaiming "Fuck it, this is good enough."

Dude was writing on a time crunch, requesting a year longer and only getting 6 months. I'm impressed the story turned out as well as it did.
