1) Sony have experience in manufacturing and general supply chain management, vs likely very limited experience between oculus and Facebook.

2) cheaper to have a single panel vs two on the OR.

3) entry level PSVR could be headset only which saves money on the camera and controller (could be $100 saving right there)

I could see PSVR being $399 headset-only, but it might not be easy for them to go much cheaper, assuming OR is selling at or near cost.

Vive conversely :
1) two tracking lighthouses vs one webcam
2) two motion controllers vs one non-motion controller in OR
3) HTC aren't in this as a charity and have no platform to push unlike Oculus/Facebook or Sony.

I could see Vive being $1-200 more than OR

Those controllers don't look cheap. I can see them in the ~$1000 range.

€742 to order it is crazy. I paid half that for the DK2. It doesn't even come with the Touch controllers. How much extra are they going to be?

900$ Canadian is a fucking joke lol. I'm ready for Vr but not at that price and for now it's seems there only a few tech demos and some short casual games developed for it.

We'll see how it perform on the long run and see if there's more big devs jumping into it

While the sticker shock is warranted, it is expected of first generation consumer electronics, as others have already pointed out for the first DVD and Blu-ray players. UHD TV prices were laughable just a few years ago and now you can purchase a cheap one, albeit of questionable quality.

That's an insane price. Expecting the PSVR to be around the same, seeing as it has that extra "processing power" box with it. Occulus is headset only as far as i'm aware. I can hang on for a few years, not in a rush to get VR.

Last I heard about the vive was that the controllers weren't as good and the headset wasn't as comfortable

Plus the rift is getting a bunch of exclusive games so I'd be hard pressed to find a reason to go the HTC route (especially since I haven't liked their actual hardware output in years)

The price is steep but it will absolutely be worth it.

Everyone is going to be upset by the price of PSVR and Vive as well I think. But this is the first gen of a new medium and the sets are all much more elaborate and high quality than originally expected.

But the tech is still advancing rapidly. With all the talk of eye tracking in the second generation and potential foveated rendering soon after, even enthusiasts may be cautious of getting it at this price.

I can stomach the $600.... but I need to upgrade from my GTX 670 to run it, so another $600 for a new video card isn't going to happen right now. Maybe when video cards that can run it are $300ish I will start thinking about the VR jump. Seeing as I will be using this for sim racing on PC, I don't need to case cutting edge graphics and $600 for a triple monitor setup is reasonable and VR replaces that need.

You can get a 970 or equivalent for around $300 now, which is the baseline for the rift.

$599 US comes out to around $843 Canadian.

I am concerned about getting hit with additional taxes when it arrives at the door.

If Oculus isn't charging HST themselves, assume you will have to pay it in your purchase decision. Consider it a lucky surprise if your package manages to sneak through untaxed.

I agree. I think the PSVR will be around $299.99-$349.99 tops. I think some people think the PSVR will be made with the same quality parts and perform as good as the OR and I think those people are insane. The PSVR will be the low-end of the VR headsets, it will be the cheapest and not only in price. It will still be pretty good, but not as good as the OR.

People thinking that you will get the same quality of performance out of the PSVR vs. the OC are in for a shock if they think this. In my opinion and as stated above, the PSVR will be the low-end, entry level headset for 2016. I think it will still be a fun and exciting headset, but no where near the level/quality of the OC. Again, this is just my opinion in relationship to the 2 units.

Also the biggest difference is that with Oculus, you need a high end computer. With the PSVR, you only need a PS4 (which is easier to get than a high end PC).

However, Sony could jump ship on developing any games for it if it doesnt take off (see: PS Move, Vita). Even though I think Oculus will have stuggles with its library, it probably has more promise in the long run due to the fact that its on PC and is more indie friendly. But out of the gate for 600+, there are zero games that I know of.

Yeah VR will stay niche for a long time. There simply aren't enough games and contents to justify this kind of price.
Sony seems to be much better positioned than this (price of PSVR will likely be in the 299-399$ range) but they're targeting a much more cost conscious target with console gamers so the substance won't change for them either.
