Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

I wonder how this will impact game development for the Rift. Should be interesting to see if developers start to shift more towards supporting PSVR.

So I pre-ordered. I'm excited at what Oculus can provide, and I like being able to experiment with the tech, but let's see what month 1 reviews tell us.

I've avoided VR tech until it was ready - hopefully it will be worth the wait [and the £520+ price of entry]

Just ordered mine, £530 delivered here in the UK. They dont take the money until it ships so i can always change my mind and cancel which is nice.

BUT people who think the PSVR will be $400 are living in a dream world!!!!!!

Unless Sony sells it at a deficit.

Sony wont sell the unit at a loss in an unknown market such as VR, thats financial suicide....especially if the PSVR has to have that processor box bundled with it!

I'd imagine this is like an original iPhone thing.

Very expensive upfront but it will make a splash once it's at a mass market price.

Yeah, i've been waiting for VR for the last 3 years, feverishly, and for 740€ it's just an absurd price to pay, for what content is there and considering in 2 years there'll probably be a better version out.

True, it feels a bit like with the Apple watch. Being an early adopter just doesn't seem worth it.

I got in right away and got to the final screen early while it was showing March, but every attempt at finalizing payment failed with a generic error message until another ~30 minutes or so passed. During that time of attempting over and over again, the finalization page changed to show April instead of March, but when the order finally went through I got March after all, possibly because I was held earlier in the queue due to getting to the final step quickly.

Damn it. I had to switch browsers to get it to work, so I guess I lost my spot. There was nothing to even indicate that there was a queue of any kind. Frustrating.

Congrats on getting in on the initial shipment, though. I'm hoping they find a way to push more people forward to launch day.

This meltdown right now is funny to me. I'll enjoy that meltdown as well. I can tell there are many young ones on the board who had a lot of hopes and dreams...seeing it being shattered to the realities of the world...priceless. :)

FWIW I'm genuinely hurt as an adult that can afford an Oculus because I know the product can no longer be a success nor can I rationally throw $600 on this particular revision of the product.

VR future has shattered.

$100 too much without the touch included. There just isn't enough software yet to justify that investment, especially on gen one tech. will wait on Vive, but I could easily see that going north of $699 itself

Priced accordingly to the niche first adopters enthusiasts that are its target audience in the first years. No surprise from me.

Perfect, haha.

I guess I'll have to wait for the CV2.

The tech is no doubt impressive and I'd love to spend more time with it, but there's a certain particularly insufferable subset of VR fanboys that gets very, very defensive at any suggestion that the devices might be prohibitively expensive for the mass market, or, more fundamentally, that consumers might not want to spend hours at a time wearing a bulky headset that cuts them off from all external visual stimuli.

These people are due for a wake-up call.

I'd check the order number itself. Mine said March on the final purchase page, but when I checked the order number on the site, it said April and I was sad.

I ran the compatibility test and it said they weren't compatible. I clicked the learn more link and got directed to a page which said:

Why am I getting this error?
If you received this error message, our compatibility tool detected that your computer's USB 3.0 ports are incompatible with Rift.

Flat out zero other explanation.

Why are there people yelling VR will fail because the Generation 1 devices are expensive?

It´s too expensive for me right now, but that´s how it is. I´d rather have them start off with tech that is good and therefore expensive rather than some piece of shit that is cheap and not work right and have bad impressions.

What would actually make VR fail is not a high price but a shitty product.

Also yeah, HD TVs will fail, 8000$? DVD will fail, 1000$?

Just wait a couple of years for the price to come down. The "main stream" market right now is absolutely irrelevant. The most important part right now is to have a good product.

It's not letting me Pre order it!!!!

"Your payment couldn't be processed. If you're sure you entered your information correctly, please contact your credit card provider for assistance."

My shipping and billing address are not the same. :(

I was joking^^ I know that the US has very low taxes. With taxes that would be 650$ if we take 10%. Let's say 670$ with shipping. That 625€. Hmm...

The fact that Oculus is apparently charing over 750€ (some say even 800-900€ :/) is just ... disgusting.

20 % sales tax in most of Europe. 20 % of $599 is $120. $719 in € is 668 €. Add customs fee and shipping and 741 € doesn't seem too far off the mark, considering the Euro is getting weaker and weaker and they have to anticipate future currency value for their prices.

Can somebody who's successfully preordered confirm that this thing doesn't try to take $599 out of your bank account because I do not have that much in the bank right now.

The custom charge on my order in £0. Is it possible they're shipping from the UK (I'm in the UK)?

All customs and taxes are included in the base price.

Can somebody who's successfully preordered confirm that this thing doesn't try to take $599 out of your bank account because I do not have that much in the bank right now.

It doesn't. Only a small authorization charge. Full charge only when shipped.

Can I just say that I'm very excited for all of you that got your orders in? I'm looking forward to reading your first impressions soon!

To be honest it was foolish expecting any less. Everytime a new technology emerges it will cost a fortune in the first couple of years. Second generation should be better both on the tech side and price side.

I think my PC is good enough to play it but I'm not interested in playing Beta tester. Everything they've shown so far looks neat and all, but not "I'd rather buy this thing instead of a bunch of games or other cool stuff"-neat.

And I'm not that surprised by the price.
