Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Yep, going to be a long time before I'll be getting one of these (particularly given that I play on a gaming laptop - first I'd have to either get a graphics amplifier for it with an upgraded graphics card, or build a desktop).

And Blu-Ray sells nowhere near what DVD did.

That's also partly because of the grow of streaming services (besides the smaller jump in IQ from DVD > BR compared to VHS > DVD).

Sony is probably going to be 200-300€ cheaper, at least it's not going to be the same price . OR has way better quality and is the better tech.

It's crazy how I was willing to pay $450-499 at the most, and would have been absolutely disgusted with myself for paying that much - but Oculus coming in $100 north of that will make Sony releasing PSVR at my initially regret max price feel like a fucking bargain. All in the matter of a few hours.

Yep. Great news for Sony assuming they can hit $399-499. They get to be expensive yet still perceived as good value

welp! i'll be sitting this one out.

enjoy early adopters! i'm jealous.

edit: there's still hope though with psvr - actually that number may help other VR units if it's the highest. it is the most known though with the general public, which will give vr a stigma

As someone who is interested but does not own a gaming pc (iMac) this is getting to expensive given that there are no killer apps even announced.

lol thanks, I am of 2 minds here until I have confirmation.

Here's my estimated breakdown of the bundle cost if it DOES cost $781 AUD

$79 - Xbox One Controller
$35 - Xbox Wireless Adapter
$100 - Tracking Camera
$39 - Oculus Remote
$69 - Eve Valkyrie
$39 - Lucky's Tale
$300 - Oculus Rift
$120 - Shipping

= $781

That seems reasonable BUT only if that really IS in AUD and NOT USD.

@PalmerLuckey All the international prices are essentially the converted US price+required taxes, customs fees, etc.

I don't think it is in AUD. Is your authorisation cost $1 on your bank account? If it is $1.40 then it is USD.

Psvr isn't for pc, so lol to that

Why would you LOL to that? Playstation has a large install base and if they price it right it has an opportunity to reach the masses. This then opens up opportunities for VR on PC as well as users will want to expand their VR experiences outside of just gaming or with better hardware.

the headset and an external box screams expensive along with a bundled game. I am expecting $400 - $500.

I'm hoping that there will be a PSVR standalone will be at least $100 less than whatever the bundled price is going to be since I already own the camera and 2 Move wands.

Their compatibility tool isn't that accurate.

I got this

Even though my laptop, an MSI GT80 with 2 x GTX 980m, doesn't utilize Optimus Technology.

There is no way Oculus is moving the games, the controller and adapter at retail price.

Wow, that's a bit higher than I expected. I suppose it doesn't invalidate what they said about Rift + capable PC being 1500$ total, but that's sort of stretching the limits of that budget. As excited as I was for the technology I might have to wait 2 years for the second generation model.

Now we wait to see the Vive price. HTC is a hardware company so I don't know if they'd be willing to lose money on hardware sales since Valve will be the one making the money off the software, and their tracking tech looks way more complicated to manufacture, plus their bundle price includes the tracked controllers.

Why? Because Oculus said that it will cost around the same as DK2. And because the differences between DK2 and CV1 are pretty small. Basically just better screen and some design differences.

CV1 has double the number of screens, totally different optics, exotic materials, and built-in audio. There's a huge difference between what's on the CV1 vs the DK2. The only reason people expected it to be under 500 dollars is because they expected Facebook to sell it way below cost, which they might already be doing to be honest.

what the fuck? 600 bucks and not releasing for a year? console makers should do the same thing to get revenue building - just release a price a year before their console releases and hope people pre-order.

I knew this was going to happen, won't sell much at all. I hope those who do pay for it find some enjoyment though.

I think PSVR will be the most accessible one for gamers but all in all it's looking like VR is coming in too early.

Seeing all the Sony fanboys celebrating I thought I stepped in a dimension where Oculus works on PS4 and the PSVR on computers...

well Oculus wont work on Ps4 but PsVR will very likely work on PC :) not officially but still.

I can use a DS4 on pc and not because Sony suddenly decided to support it on PC!

Also why would you or Oculus expect mainstream adoption of gen 1 when it's going to improve and iterate so quickly? I thought you guys hated buying new devices every 9-12 months? Unlike other tech, no one is going to want to hold on to or revisit early gen VR due to improvements in physical comfort and immersion.

Shipping is up to May now, LoL. That parody Kaz Twitter account is gonna look kinda bad if this keeps up.

So what might that be in U.S.?

$60 - Xbox One Controller
$25 - Xbox Wireless Adapter
$95 - Tracking Camera
$30 - Oculus Remote
$60 - Eve Valkyrie
$30 - Lucky's Tale
$300 - Oculus Rift headset
TOTAL: $600

So if they dropped the two games, the Xbox controller and adapter and the remote, this thing could cost $400.

It's €799 for some Europeans (Belgium here) and possible import fees. In other words, it might even go above a thousand euros, that's two times the regular price and absolutely insane.

Ball is in Sony's court now. If they can come in at a decent price they will be the market leader this first gen and should receive plenty of 3rd party support.

I guess the problem is that this tech item isn't able to work without additional hardware.

Yea, but to me needing a higher powered PC was a known quantity. I mean weren't blu-ray players stupid expensive, but it only made sense to buy one if you had a good TV to go with it.

Hahaha wow! Oh the schadenfreude. No way in hell this sees mass market adoption with a price that high. You even need to pay out the ass for a computer to run the damn thing on top of this?!?! What the hell were they thinking? Yikes.

Most new tech don't see mass market adoption with its first iteration. It took years for there to be more HD TVs in American households than SD TVs. And that's a common electronic product.

Wow, kickstarter backers made a huge deal with receiving the final version free if they backed $275+.

One of my friend is receiving one for free.

An article on HDTV in 1998.

Doomed.

DVD players were $1000 when they launched.

It's what you pay for adopting a new tech early.

This won't be the one the mass market will embrace. No one is expecting that.

Prices drop on fixed hardware as production scales up. But VR will need to continue to iterate rapidly to improve. So it'll be more like iPhone like a previous poster said. price may stay the same to allow for the tech to improve (higher res screens, eye tracking etc)

Also why would you or Oculus expect mainstream adoption of gen 1 when it's going to improve and iterate so quickly? I thought you guys hated buying new devices every 9-12 months? U like other tech, no one is going to want to hold on to or revisit early gen VR due to improvements in physical comfort and immersion.

1. They said the consumer product would be priced for the mainstream
2. They said it would be "a little more than $350" about a month ago

They said they were making a mainstream product and that's what I expected. I think they should have called this DK3.

Sticker shock for sure. With the limited content that will be available, VR has a big hill to climb. Ball is in Sony's court.

Did they ever release any shipment numbers for the development kits? What's the general ballpark? 10k? 100k?

This officially and firmly places VR into the niche category. Nothing costing ~16-1700 dollars will ever reach mainstream appeal. Your turn Sony, help us all.

Let's say the PSVR will be $350 you still need a $350 PS4 to use it, so we are $700.00 before taxes. Yet you think "Sony, help us all" with that cost of entry it is not going to be niche as well?

You also have to remember, that the tech in the OC is far superior to the PSVR. The PSVR will be the "cheap/low end/entry level" VR experience in my opinion. While still "neat" it will not be near the level of performance of the OC in both quality and features/experience.

You should be okay. How are you looking on 3D Mark? are you able to run most games at ultra settings at a locked 60 fps?
