Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

You'd have expected his response on twitter not to be blame your country but why have you said 900-1000 euros when we cover import fully?

That's why there is confusion. No one should be paying 900+ euros if import is covered.

I doubt he even knows what the thing costs in other regions than US. Of course he should've checked it to avoid confusion.

Conflicting messages. So the Euro price doesn't include import taxes after all?

He's not wrong, but he should stop typing before it gets worse.

My issue isn't the price as much as the content. Owning a DK2, right now there just isn't more than a couple of weeks worth of content available to keep you entertained. I'll get a consumer Rift at some point, because it is indeed awesome tech, but I figure it'll be like mobile gaming, where it'll take 4-5 years before there's really a good amount of VR games out and released consistently.

I feel like Morpheus will have a more steady stream of VR games for the first year or two of release. Will probably grab that first.

If the PSVR can come out at $399 It will have a significant advantage here. Considering the beefy PC needed and the price tag on the Rift VR is going to be a boutique thing for a niche crowd. Also, I fucking hope PSVR is within my price range because lord do I need to see DOAX 3 in VR.

So is Oculus launching with game that justify this price? I mean, real games and not just this rollercoaster show off kinda crap.
If they aren't launching this with some mindblowing games than I'm really curious as to who they want to sell this to.

600 would be a great price if it was plug and play hardware in the sense you just need a usb 3 port.

The fact that its just an accessory is hard. to swallow

You need a $1500 dollar computer to run it, and people think that the pricing is a disaster because it's $600 instead of $500.

People buy Iphones for more every year.

...and these same smartphone/tablet people have a convergent, portable device that operates out of the box. Meanwhile, Oculus isn't portable and requires a PC upgrade for most potential consumers.

loooooool

this is absolutely the money grab/early adapter price. i wouldn't expect it to stay this high for more than 3-6 months tops. but it's still ridiculous. I guess it was too be expected. It's a bit higher than I thought though.

I never did that. The PSVR will be great and i'm sure priced great, but I think some people in this thread don't realise the advantages the Rift has over the PSVR.

More like the advantages PC have over PS4 .
Don't get me wrong i expect Rift to be better than PSVR headsets wise.
But is should be since it has the hardware power to back it .

Not worried about that. I game on PC and PS4, and I respect each platform. The PSVR is 1080p 120Hz. The processing box that comes with it allows for this. Do you think normal people care that they are getting 1080p 120Hz instead of a 1080 x 1200 at 90Hz? I know I don't. I also believe that after some time, PSVR will work on PC just like the dualshock 4 does after some mods were released.

I don't know what people will care about, each person is different, you asked why it'll be a worse experience and i told you why.
Fidelity won't be as good, because the recommended specs of an Oculus PC are significantly higher than what a PS4 can do.

I also have a gaming PC and a Ps4, btw.

There's certainly an entitlement there. Do people really expect Oculus to eat their country's import costs?
People expect Oculis not to hike the price by over $100 then. They charge EU around $750 for what is sold in the US at $600, yet don't include any fees.
At least with PS4/XBox, the final price was final, so it was easy to justify $399=€399 (499 for Box).
Here they charge you more, then expect you to pay an extra 30% on top of an already hiked price.

This makes me pause and realise how it can be small, simple experiences that really make VR worthwhile. I can imagine fewer games to be fine, bit spending more time with each one. Just the sound of that Nurburgring drive makes me wish I could anything close to the feeling I had driving a lotus exige around thruxton. Maybe I can take my VR fund and spend it on a new wheel or HOTAS setup now that I'm getting a free OR..

Actually... I think my favorite VR experience thus far has been Proton Pulse which is basically a breakout clone where head tracking is used to control the paddle. It's super simple but extremely intuitive, and a great usage of VR.

On the US site, it says taxes aren't included in the price, on the UK site it doesn't say that. So I'm going to assume they'll sort out the customs before hand, and that's what the price hike is.

That twitter response is hilarious though. He apparently didn't realise that himself, and instead posted a passive aggressive response?

As per blog post: Rift+PC bundles are starting at $1499. Might be able to build on your own cheaper, but good option for normal people.

Nah normal people too.

What normal people do you know that spends that much on a PC?

I don't know anyone who has spent that much on a PC in the UK(doing a direct conversion), and that's including the fact that UK tech prices are really ridiculous.

Not everyone. Lots of people buy thier iphone outright.

Also I guess rich people only have credit cards also right? Damn rich people.
An iPhone only requires a sim card to work, you still need a beefy PC to use the Rift. Anyway, bad comparison imho.

iPhones don't require a $1200 gaming PC to run.

So something needs to be lower because you need something expensive that they have no control over? How do Oculus benefit? This isn't like the PS4 which Sony sells.

Do you say the same about high end graphics cards that need a pc? A PC for $1200?

An iPhone only requires a sim card to work, you still need a beefy PC to use the Rift. Anyway, bad comparison imho.
Most people that are interested in the Oculus already has a PC. Who here actually buying a brand new pc along with VR? Oculus does not benefit in anyway you buying a PC from Dell. Why should they lower the price, take a hit? This isn't Sony.

I was expecting it to be $500+ and it turns out to be the case. I don't understand how anyone thought VR was going to be less than $500.

Before I explain, let me say that I did pre-order this morning. Not sure if I'm going to keep that pre-order, but most likely will.

People were expecting a lower price because they (Luckey) had previously communicated that they were targeting accessible VR for the masses (this was his whole dream) somewhere around $350. They also made it clear that the consumer version was being developed in such a way that it was a no-compromises device - they wanted this thing to be as perfect as possible. They took a long time and a couple iterations on the hardware prior to release so they would have the product they set out to create. So, they have evidently created the hardware they wanted to but now have to compromise on the price - at least for the first round.

It does not surprise me in the least that people are upset about this. I'm a little upset about it and may go with a Vive if the cost is similar since it comes with the motion controllers and lighthouse, as well as the new front-facing camera.

EDIT: And Luckey hinting that the price would be higher that expected shortly before release wasn't going to get people ready for a $600 price tag. That was way too big of a jump from his original vision to be expected by the masses.

I can't believe Palmer said that on twitter. Just because you only have 140 characters doesn't mean you have to reply in the most rude way possible!

Oculus going the PS3/Xbone route before it even launches (PR gaffes and all!)

No thanks. I'll stick to PS VR as long as it's affordable. $600 is too much but I'm excited for those who get the chance to enjoy Oculus.

Simply cannot justify spending this much on a VR set when I know I'll be buying a new model in a few years anyway (this is prototype, early-adopters phase, folks).

What the actual fuck. First the product is more expensive in Europe ($600 + %20 tax != €700), next at that price shipping isn't even included (which is practically a standard in the Netherlands), and to top it off customs isn't even included.

This must be some major fuck-up mistake by Oculus.

If you're comparing it to the iPhone 1, that was $599 and worth it day one, so hopefully this will be too.

My point was that we are talking about a completely different product and most of the iPhones we subsidized through the service carriers making them cheaper. Not by that much for the 1st gen iPhone , BUT, that was a communication device with internet capabilities and a it was one of the first viable replacements for a digital camera. But lets not talk about what phones offer compared to the Oculus. My point is that those devices were small and essential for most people because they were a computer, phone and camera in one little device. The Oculus is huge and very niche, it is way easier to convince someone that a new model phone is worth $600 then to convince them that a "gaming" VR headset is definitely worth $600 and a must have on top of that.

This won't be the year of VR, confirmed. Or, at least, the year of Oculus. It really needs to be cheaper and I guess the time's still not right to sell a product like that for 350-450 bucks.
