Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Steam on January 28

Of course that will be canned just like FaceWorks for Batman Arkham Knight. We don't have hardwares to run such techs running alone, let alone in a full fledged demanding game.

Don't we ? I thought Maxwell GPUs had enough juice for a decently high quality implementation at 30fps.

Sadly nope. The tech itself isn't finished yet and is very ambitious and promising. I don't think NVidia is creating a new type of hardware in their next GPUs for nothing. Last-gen GPUs won't be enough to run the tech in its full glory.
And there is no need to talk about the other techs, if you want them all in one game. :p

And you are basing this on what exactly ? Are you positioning yourself as some sort of techie whose words are not supposed to be doubted ?
There could be other reasons why VXAO or Faceworks have not been implemented, even if the performance could be good on modern hardware.
Too difficult to implement, would maybe require major change in the engine etc...

This is a joint presentation between AMD and SE. This PureHair is obviously based on TressFX but it's hard to tell how much of the original code is left intact there.

FXAA as the only ingame AA solution would be really bad honestly.

It was the same with all games on this engine - TR, DXHR.

VXAO is a smaller portion of VXGI which is even as a whole perfectly capable of running in real time on Maxwell GPUs.

How much did Microsoft pay for exclusivity again? They gotta' be hurting after that one. Glad there's a PC release so soon.

At what framerate tho? Their appollo demo was already borderline and that was a simple barren scene with nothing happening. Hardware isnt ready to incorporate that into an actual game.

I am PRETTY sure the ao portion of vxgi would be decidedly cheaper than the full thing. It does not have to calculate multiple diffuse bounces and you are not cone tracing into the voxel grid for specular reflections. Since most of the smaller details are not being rendered anyway, you could probably get away with an even coarser voxel grid. Cryengine svogi offers many quality and integration modes and the ao only version (like vxao would be) costs like less than 1 ms on modern gpus.I do not see why that would not be the case here.

I'm glad it's coming out this soon, but my plan was to wait for the PS4 version. I don't think I can wait any longer though. Do you guys think this will run well on my rig? I have an i5-3570K, 8GB DDR3-1333 RAM and an AMD HD7970 OC 3GB.

That's not true, TR2013 has other AA options.
Nope. I don't consider SSAA as a real AA option as this is just straight brute force supersampling which you can enable just about anywhere with DSR / Custom Res / AA bits.

It's not so bad:
Performance:
With the above in mind, performance was a good surprise. I have a GTX Titan GPU (not a Titan X!) and my pc can be considered ‘average’ by today’s standards. Even though VXGI can be easily set to cripple your fps (32 cones, very low trace-step etc.), if you keep things on defaults or around that range, it still allows you to have the experience without your scene becoming a slideshow. This is of course a generic impression and since polycount and scene-complexity (number of lights contributing to VXGI, shadows etc.) do impact VXGI, I guess for now performance is as good as you want it depending on your hardware and your scene-specifics.
Basically, the effect is highly scalable.

They don't make any money off of it though. The only things in general that are cross-buy have been some of Sony's games and those have only been on their consoles, not PC.
Saying they don't make money off of it is kind of short sighted. They would possibly gain a sale on PC from users who would choose it over the STEAM version. They also now have users looking at their store for future titles. It's a value add for selling a copy through their store compared to others.

However Ms isn't the publisher so yes, the publisher has no real incentive to help Ms make their store attractive.

Will definitely run better than the console versions, provided Nixxes ports it. Which they are.

Yes, if you stick to Xbox One settings you are guaranteed to run it at 60fps, and there might be some room for some additional settings.

So I shouldn't play it day 1?

There are always exceptions, of course, and I have no way of knowing if this one does or doesn't have bugs, but in the past their ports have had some issues at the start.

Tomb Raider had problems with the post-processing effects not working, etc, but it was still arguably the best version of the game available at launch.

Deus Ex Human Revolution had the stuttering issue for eons until they patched it.

Hitman Absolution had some optimization issues.

I think Sleeping Dogs was fine from the jump, but I can't remember for sure.

Nothing game-breaking or anything, but a couple weeks to a month later and their ports are damn near flawless. I still like them a lot because of that fact, though. Can't say the same for most devs.

is this coming to the windows store the same day? and if i were to buy it off there how do i have it install on a different hdd?

It's very strange the pre-order is not live yet on the Windows store.

Anyway, Jacob from EVGA confirmed there are "other" AA options in game :
It has AA settings, they are on a different menu.

I suppose we should expect SSAA, I doubt they would bother implementing MSAA.
It's very demanding and does not do much to reduce shader aliasing which plagues this game. Even the 4k downsampled shots exhibit shader aliasing.

Do we even know what kind of renderer does the game use ? I think I've read somewhere it's deferred, so MSAA essentially very difficult to implement or downright ineffective.

I don't care much for in-game SSAA now that DSR or VSR exist, I would prefer Crytek/Epic style temporal AA.

the game will almost certainly have the exact same aa options as the previous tomb raider. its the same engine with some improvements

Ugh... I really want to pick this up on steam but not for $60, would feel much better dropping $40 on this.

I'll wait and try to pickup a bundle code on ebay or something...

*edit*

found code on ebay for $30 and bought it :D

From the screens it looks great, but not that much better compared to the Xbox One version, it could be me getting older but i don't pay that attention to the graphics anymore, i'll try it on PC too though cause it's a great game and perhaps i'll notice the difference by playing it directly on my 42" Tv

Yes i'll do the same, actually cause i own and finished it already on Xbox One so i really wouldn't need it, though i'm sure it'll be easy to find it for a good price on Ebay after a few weeks, especially since they'll bundle it with Nvidia's GPUs

60 fps and low input lag (hopefully) will make huge difference.

As I wrote my previous post I decided to check ebay and see if people were already selling the nVidia bundle codes, and they are!

Found one listing that was selling keys for $30 and I happily picked it up :) The guy had positive reviews, and looks like he already sold 4 out of the 10 codes.

Would have spent $40, but $30 is even better. Good stuff

I expect some improvements on PC still, but nothing major (pertaining to graphics). I strongly doubt scalability will be limited to what could be accomplished on xbone.

Hopefully Nvidia's VXAO is in.

so close to XCOM 2 ;'(

oh well! day 1

My first thought as well! :(

But, regardless, I'm all in. Loved the gameplay of the first one and heard nothing but great things about this one.

You are very welcome :)

Apparently the code needs to be redeemed on geforce.com before you get the steam key. I would suggest redeeming it right away when you get it.

*edit*

got it and worked flawlessly.

No such luck in Germany unfortunately. People want at least 37€ on eBay. At least cdkeys.com are selling it for about 32€.

Well, you should. In-game SSAA is something that is likely to work in ten years while there is no guarantee that DSR/VSR "hack" won't be killed off by some WDDM update of Windows.

Sure, why not. They just have to disallow using any resolutions which aren't supported by the display EDID.

The likelyhood of that happening, while not none, is fairly low.
But I'm all for native SSAA for those with the performance to spare.

It must not be terribly difficult to implement either, is it ? Wonder why it's not more common.
