TF2 is getting competitive matchmaking

Hope they give us an option to turn off viewmodels anyway or later down the road at least. Ive played this game for xxxx amount of hours, i really dont need to see the weapons anymore. It's just clutter. Wish more FPS's would give the option to disable them even.

I've been playing this for years but never tried disabling view models, I know a lot of competitive players do though.

Is it purely just to free up space on screen? I never really felt like my gun got in the way so it never felt necessary.

Main reason is to free up space, yeah. Especially helpful to avoid those really bad weapon animations like the original revolver reload.

I've found it helps with aiming too, can focus on the crosshair more easily.

And with Valve requiring certain LOD levels for weapon models (when skins were added) it improves performance a tiny bit.

Flame is friends on steam with a couple of Valve employees, gave away beta keys he got from them and b4nny retweeted it so yeah, something is happening.

a TF2 6v6 gossip twitter, which seems to be well informed also confirmed it: https://twitter.com/realtalk_tf/status/697065880933502976

Rumor about the "hype for this week":
A high chance matchmaking might be delayed this week due to a bug causing people to crash when joining server.
this is from a source that did predict opskin's involvement with tf2, but who knows. The source also said that the beta would be released this week, but then said that it may not be because of that bug.

I am experiencing that bug, (crashing every other connect), and this definitely would be a problem.

btw I first thought "game changer in the literal use of the phrase" would be switching to Overwatch due to the beta starting this week again :p

This is good news - I didn't know it would be 6v6.

Idk if someone at Valve said this directly, but I think the reasoning is it's easier to get 6 people together for a team where everyone can play whichever class they want rather than Highlander where you need 9 people and everyone has to play a specific class.

Though I do believe Highlander is planned to be added in the future.

I'd hop back on to TF2 immediately when the update hits. I miss playing Spy so much, and this would quench my competitive thirst.

I'm curious how balancing is going to be handled from here on out. Items and balance changes were typically done with pubs in mind, but what works in pubs may not work well with 6v6, and vice versa. Spy for example, is rarely used in 6v6, especially since snipers can typically do the same job, faster, and from safety, and as a result are a more common offclass. I wonder if certain classes like spy or pyro end up getting reworked to try to make them more viable for that mode (but then again, a lot of the more controversial nerfs/changes pyro recently got were because of competitive feedback, so perhaps they'll just get nerfed to the ground instead).

Careful about that. Spy is only really common in highlander (and that's mainly because you're forced to have a spy), and 6v6 will likely be the main comp mode for awhile until highlander is in. I can guarantee you people are going to copy the competitive scene, which rarely employs spies in place of snipers, which basically means you'll likely have people screaming to kick/report you if you even think about going spy.

If people want to kick me that's fine. I want to have fun, and playing Spy is the only way I can have fun in the game. My playtime is 165 hours on Spy, and other class that comes close is Sniper at 30 hours.

IIRC, one of the players that visited Valve mentioned that Valve wants players to be able to change between classes freely. Not possible in HL unless they tinker with the format.

6v6 with no weapon bans is for a variety of reasons the best way to start this thing off.

I do see them adding in a class limit down the line though. No more than 2 of each or so.

Pyro will be viable if Gunslinger is allowed. The only reason Pyro pockets aren't a thing is because of Scouts, and Minisentries will make them nonexistent.

Spies will still be useless.

I've got a hunch that spy might be up for a rework or something like that in the future. His two recently reworked unlocks, the dead ringer and big earner, both allow a faster paced spy playstyle compared to their peers. I would not be surprised if valve tries to make spy viable by making him faster paced, which would make him a better fit for competitive, at least to some degree.

If allowing the Gunslinger completely eliminates Scouts you can bet that Gunslinger won't be allowed :p

I hope

New hard drive installed, space for TF2 successfully earned, no Overwatch beta invite in sight.

Alright, time to play Pyro and Engineer again. Plus I never did put any real time into the Vaccinator.

Fuck the spies on our server. Had to spycheck every literal 2 seconds. Even then some BS sidestabs, eventually people got better at checking for stairs too.
I genuinely would be surprised if I ever got stabbed on a pub though.

*Tenck is good

If this keeps the try-hards out of the public servers then I'm all for it.

Most public servers are easy anyway. I think of it from the opposite perspective of being able to guarantee a game with people of similar skill. That said, I haven't played since the Gun Mettle update so I'll probably be a bit rusty.

Hello from the TF2 team, and thanks for joining the TF2 competitive beta group! We hope you're all ready to start killing each other for points as we get this mode up on its feet.

We know you'd all like to start testing now, and eventually we hope all of you WILL get a chance to play and share your thoughts. But remember that all testing happens in stages, and right now we're at stage one.

Our plan is to start small and increase participation as we go. For this initial phase of testing - which will begin in the next week or so - we'll be gradually granting random members from this group an in-game item called a Competitive Matchmaking Beta Pass. Once you've been granted a pass you will have ongoing access to the beta.

In addition, we will begin holding both announced and unannounced stress-test events, inviting many group members to participate for the duration of the event to test our systems. Group members selected for stress-tests won't require a pass to play for the duration of the event.

Whether we randomly select you for stress testing or grant you a pass, we will prioritize group members that meet the following requirements:

Thanks again for your interest and support.

Stress test for matchmaking is live right now!

Gonna try solo queue for a bit, this'll be... interesting.

EDIT: Whoops, it's over! Played 8 matches - Badlands, Granary, and Viaduct all worked predictably well but Double Cross is so weird. Really like the UI Valve put together for this and overall I had a really smooth experience. This little taste has me even more hyped for future tests and the actual release of matchmaking. :3
