Street Fighter V Beta IV Thread: Jan 30-31

So I finally put some hours into the beta yesterday, my first real time playing. I think I went just a little under 50% win rate, which I am super pleased about.

More importantly, I played a bunch of different characters in training mode, and I have to say for the first time in a fighting game my main was immediately clear to me, with Necalli. Usually I hate any character with a charge move, but he only has one, and it is super easy to execute. Baiting fireballs and eating through them feels sooooo good. I can't wait to keep playing and improving with him.

Gat damn did I get my shit wrecked by a Nash player once though. I didn't catch his name but that entire match was over in like 30 seconds. Insane amount of pressure from that character.

Also, I really feel like this game is pushing fundamentals instead of long combo chains, and encouraging smart play. I already feel like I actually "improved" instead of just watching one mistake lead to a 8 hit 40% combo, which is really nice.

Thoughts on Laura

She's probably the Dan of this game (That's giving her too much credit because at least Dan has good normals). I can do a lot with Zangief, Karin and Charlie but with Laura she really has nothing other than extending her combo after her S.MK with V-Trigger and allowing her to do an air reset off her EX-Fireball. You have to be Mike Ross to fall for this .Fighting her isn't fun it's very lame as well as playing as her. And her theme, What the hell Capcom?
Laura is more like the Makoto of this game. She has fantastic frame traps and throw setups, just get creative and DING DIIIIIIIIIIING

You know, it's funny. Last night on twitter Ultradavid came to the realization that Laura is basically Omega mode Dan.

Which is her only play style. People will learn not to press button and start to use tech, shorts and jabs whenever she goes for a throw.
What other playstyle does a grappler need? "Don't press buttons unless you need to press buttons" isn't exactly easy to do, otherwise grapplers would be useless in every game, no crouch teching to blanket that shit in this game either.

It's crazy seeing people not being able to get a lot of matches. I don't think I've ever went more than 5 minutes without getting a game.

However, even after setting connection status to 4-5 I still run into some lag.
This.

I'm getting a game every 2 minutes, it's annoying cause I just got the beta and am trying to train lol.

So who do you guys think has the best theme in the Beta? The answer is obviously
RASHIIIDOOO
but I also think Zangief has the best returning theme. It's just epic as hell.

I played her a ton last night and thought she was one of the most fun characters so far. her setups are crazy.

and that's when I back off and wheel kick them

NOOOOOOOOOOUUU!!!

My PSN Subscription ran out!! :(

I really like neccalis and nash's too, but rashid's is the king. Everytime I see i'm going to fight him i'm like "well at least I get to listen to some awesome music"
Sometimes it feels like I'm the only person playing the beta that uses v-reversals.

I always use them on characters the try to shut me down like karin and bison.

You guys have any tips for super antsy players.
I can't for the life of me play patiently and end up screwing up and whiffing everything.

How does one do this

While blocking, press either forward+punches or forward+kicks (check your character's command list) to break through guard and push them off of you. Uses 1 V-meter.

It's not a perfect get out of jail card (can be baited with quick attacks and punished), but it's good for grinding the opponent's pressure to a halt and letting you recover a lot of stun meter if needed.

Less buttons, more blocking

99 seconds on the clock, theres no rush

In training, set dummy to cpu + level 8 and just practice blocking and teching throws... Don't worry about getting hit, damage, counters or anything else. Practice slowing the game down with proper movement on the ground (no jumping) combined with blocking. Stop thinking of SFV in terms of trading these super duper combos every chance and that as soon as your oppenents blockstring ended you need to hit the buttons as fast as you can. You can win against 50% of the player base right now without any 'fancy' punishing combos if you space, block, throw and use normals correctly.

I keep forgetting they exist. And I'm not really sure when I'd want to use them on Bison. When I start playing Birdie again I will definitely get some mileage out of them.

Look at R.MIka and Birdie. They don't rely on just good frame traps alone.

I feel like I have less control over Vega's dives than in past games. I keep trying to make my approach in the air unpredictable but this just leads to me missing completely.

I am glad online actually works for me this time. Last beta it would never find a match.

I am trying to grind out learning Bison. Not sure if it is worth it yet.

The matchmaking in this game is awesome. After a few games of beating on newbies and got into the 1000 LP range I just start getting bodied. All of the bs tricks used to get there aren't working anymore. This game will def keep newcomers playing people their level of skill.

Hugely important part of my game with Ryu so far. In instances where I need them, they are really keeping me in the game for longer and allowing me to learn where I've been struggling. V-reversals are winning me games, and the good part is the V bar seems to refill so quickly!

Tell me about it. I have even less control on Bison's Devil's Reverse. I can't even move left or right in mid air. OMFG.

I finally got into this beta, and damn, am I rusty. I keep trying to start combos by jumping into the opponent and juggling them like in MKX now, too.

... Needless to say, I haven't won a match yet. Granted, I've only played 7, but I have a long way to go. I'm loving Necalli, though!

I forgot about this but EX Devil's Reverse doesn't cost meter if you initially used EX Head Stomp.

This is dooope. Always catches them off guard.
