Rise of the Tomb Raider in the Ukrainian Windows Store: 234UAH (~9,11USD)

A universal "app" is restricted in the Windows APIs it is allowed to access. (This is actually the answer to both of these questions)

Or you can refuse to buy games in a format which is actively trying to kill the open PC platform.

I don't think it tries to kill, but rather provide an alternative (and if it ever tries to replace it, I'm sure there will be a just as open alternative to the store, like sideloading).

But, I would argue not many people benefit from an Open Pc platform. I've had plenty of relatives having issues trying to find software to do simple tasks, and quite often getting malware when trying to find for themselves. For these people, a curated store and an secure app platform are a godsend.

Is that because of security/anti-piracy reasons or what...?

Security and ease of use mostly.

The win32 platform doesn't get along with current tech trends, like being notifiable even when the application is not running, having consideration for battery life, being package based which means installing won't mess with your system, secure and so on.

So Ms created a new app platform that currently has no solutions for some of the freedom win32 allowed (but that's something that they are continuously trying to improve, the platform evolved a lot already compared to when it was first delivered on windows 8), but that is easy to comply with current and future trends.

Of course, they are also making this new platform "exclusive" to the windows store which obviously means that they are trying to take a cut on the software sales (though I think that the presence of a curated store is needed for the security reasons).

The quotes is because currently there's an option to install non store apps, but you must have a Pro version of windows, and a admin account.

Nah man, they are after our .exe's.

;)

It does suck that you can't do shit like run fraps, or inject nice AA. I'd love a framerate counter, easier to fine tune settings that way. But eh, it runs better than the first game does while looking way better at least.

Well, for one, this one prevents all third party injection and won't even allow the developer to implement a real fullscreen mode :P

Lol, wow. I was considering going Windows Store for Killer Instinct and Gears if they don't release on Steam, but fuuuuuuuuck that, not going to support shit like this.

I can still fix this game to 30FPS, right?

I seem to recall reading in this game's PC thread that you had to be in exclusive fullscreen mode to change that setting.

Isn't this kind of damaging to the gamers in these countries?

For instance I know that EA increased prices in India to make it equal to western prices because a lot of people from the west used VPN to buy games for cheap from Indian store, which ultimately affected the Indian gamers.

Nothing I've tried works. There's Double Buffered Vsync but that's still gonna make it jump between 30/60, driver settings don't do anything.

Globalization, bro.

In an ideal world we would have equal wages/equal prices/equal living standards for all countries...

Sadly, I can't do that. I'm a huge fan of Microsoft IP, and I need to show my support on the platform I want to play them on. I'd get them on steam instead if I could, but this is the same kind of deal as buying a console for an exclusive console game. It's either get it on their store or not at all.

Well, it is integrated into Windows, I don't even think you can delete it.

Not 100% on topic, but you actually can get rid of the Windows Store (and all the other built-in "metro" apps) pretty easily. Useful if you hate the Windows Store.

Powershell -> Run as Administrator -> "Get-AppxPackage | Remove-AppxPackage"

Be aware though: Once you do this, you can't get the store back without reinstalling Windows. So you have to be committed in your hatred of the Windows Store :P

You can limit fps with Nvidia Inspector. But only using the global profile. If you create an .bat/.exe, then maybe you can use a profile as well.

Trying not to buy anything on the Windows 10 store. Too restrictive and does all it can to stop anyone modding anything.

Will wait until it's cheaper on any other store next year.

By the way, what's the deal with multiple PCs and accounts? I can install this on a second PC, but can the users of that PC play the game?

I think you could with Windows 8, but it involved having my Microsoft account for the Store, and their Xbox account on the Xbox Live app, or something.

Yeah up to like a certain number of people.

The Windows Store version of this game seems to lack many graphics options settings. No Exclusive Fullscreen for you! Also it seems to break anything that hooks into games at low level, so no FRAPS, MSI Afterburner, Shadowplay, etc. So have fun with this guys! I hope jumping through all these hoops to save like 27-29 bucks over the Steam version was worth it!

I think it supports up to 10 PCs. Not sure if it allows simultaneous use, though.
It does allow simultaneous use. A big benefit over Steam

Been stated like 20 times in this thread and the reasoning.

What If I don't use any of these?

Just tried it out. No FRAPS or Reshade. Oh well, not a heavy loss since I OWN the game for LESS than 10 bucks.

Yeah I had no idea how fucking crippled Windows store apps were. Still for that price I'll deal. But fuck MS and shit like that is make their push against Steam all the more difficult.

Never once used any of the listed software in over a decade of PC gaming.

So yup, I'm good. Thanks for worrying about me though!

No one cares about the reasoning. If I want to turn my PC into iOS or Android, I would just go and use my phone or tablet instead. MS has their heads so far up their asses that they still haven't figured out that no one wants to turn their PC into iOS or Android.

This "universal app" thing is stupid because it cripples PC software but at the same time nobody on Earth cares about or wants Windows Phone. I mean this "universal app" version of RotTR is PC-exclusive anyways, it doesn't even run on Xbox or phones and tablets, so what exactly is the point of it being universal again?

That's a fair point.

I remember people saying that you would buy a game on the Windows Store and you would be able to play it everywhere (PC Windows, XBOX ONE) with a single, digital copy. It's clearly not the case here.

ps: Are there any Windows Phone devices that would be able to run RoTR?!

What If I don't use any of these?

Then enjoy the game at a higher price (unless you exploit a regional pricing that is clearly not intended) that is locked behind the artificial W10 wall?

It's kinda insane what MS is thinking with PC gaming by locking everything behind a single OS.

No. Not a single one. And it's highly likely there never will be.

Universal apps is was just a way to push Xbox and Windows Phone by trying to tie them to the behemoth that is Windows on PC. Despite a few interesting initiatives it's most a PR thing. You won't be hooking up a keyboard and running Firefox on Xbox anytime soon.

I ll enjoy it for 8.60 thanks :)

Way to be a prick to people for no reason at all..

Btw obs works fine if shadowplay is a problem for you.

Sorry, by advanced options I was talking about the option to clean up System files at the bottom of the menu after the first scan. It'll then do another scan and you'll have the option to remove previous operating system files.

Thanks, this way didn't work, I had to reinitialize my Windows 10 (for another reason but anyway :p) and finally I got it. :) 8,35€ for ROTR, cool!

I don't use any of these. But I do use many of Steam's features and look forward to getting the SteamOS version when it comes out (which it should since TR 2013 is getting ported according to SteamDB). And I hate Microsoft's stupid bullshit retread of GFWL, but I have to admit if I would have known about this deal before I bought the Steam version I would have taken advantage of it regardless of the detriments. I mean, it's nine dollars and some change man.

So much hoops...had to go into a setting and click a button. Such hassle.

Also willing to wager a good amount of people, myself included, could give two shits about anything you just mentioned. Thanks for the concern though

if RotTR was Crystal Dynamics last Tomb Raider game you know why.
