Nintendo Q3 FY 2015 Earnings Release

Well, it's now official: Splatoon has sold more than any Metroid, Fire Emblem, F-Zero or Star Fox game. In a much smaller user base. Amazing.

Online team shooter sells more than niche series in nearly dead genres that pride themselves on difficulty? Shocker! :P

Congratulations Splatoon!!

No Shin Megami Tensei IV Final for USA and Europe???

Do something Ninty!!

PD: so nothing about NX in the end...

Bloodborne was robbed.

If we were talking about the Wii, I'd understand, but for a new IP on the worst selling Nintendo home console of all time, to outsell the ONLY decent 2015 exclusive (which came out at the start of the year) for Sony's best performing ever home console (so far) is quite the indictment on Sony's current exclusive stable at the present moment. I'm aware it's going to improve a lot in 2016.

I think that's more of an indictment of Nintendo's focus on exclusives than anything else.

Metroid prides itself on difficulty?

While I'd say metroid is definitely more difficult to get into than splatoon, I more meant the other three examples: permadeath focused strategy sim, turbofast twitch reflexes future racer and rail shooter.

For those who don't know, tomorrow there's the investor meeting. That's where results will be discussed with more details, alongside upcoming plans. Usually, the briefing just after the results don't contain major news, compared to the "real" one. Still, don't expect major details about NX.

This isnt what I said. I said that there's no other choice to distract you from buying it. Sometimes, there are multiple appealing games and you cant afford them all. Here, you get one appealing game every 3 months at best. So the choice is easier.

If true, Pikmin 3, Tropical Freeze and Wonderful 101 would have sold millions. Which they didn't.

To be fair, a big share of Splatoon's numbers come from Japan, where online shooter isn't a popular genre. And Splatoon's aesthetics and other factors aren't gonna attract the large crowds of COD and Battlefield so the game is more experimental to the market and it's hard to initially expect big numbers from it just because its an online shooter (like how many expected it to flop in the first place).

People don't buy Mario Kart because they have Wii U's and need games for it.

They buy Wii U's because they need to play Mario Kart.

I agree here. If that statement is true, we would see Pikmin 3 and ZombiU perform much better but sadly they dont so i disagree with him here.

I hope NX is backwards compatible because WiiU is dead son.

So you're hoping Nintendo continues using Power PC in order to appease people who want BC even though the Wii U's install base is under 15 million and "dead" as you put it? I'd much rather have the minor inconvenience of continuing to leave my Wii U hooked up on my entertainment shelf alongside the NX instead of having BC as long as Nintendo is willing to finally leave Power PC behind.

It sold more than it did last year. Last year it's two biggest releases MK and Smash released and most assumed that 2014 would be it's peak year.

I'm a bit surprised by the stability of the Wii U platform during October-December. Despite having Super Mario 3D World in 2013, Super Smash Bros. in 2014 and only Mario Tennis and Xenoblade Chronicles X (which was never going to be a big seller) in 2015, the sales are almost exactly the same. The price hasn't even been reduced by much. This was a surprise for sure. I expected a considerable decrease.

I think XY would have sold more if ORAS didn't come out so soon after it. Not much more due to 3DS install base, but still, enough to overtake BW.

Yep. I said when ORAS was announced that I felt it was too soon and would gut XY's sales.

If this gen's gap year was 2014 rather than 2015, we'd be singing a different tune

The WiiU has been dead for over a year or 2 now, isn't the performance of the 3DS family the bigger concern?
Well, i'm not really into numbers and performance, but i think 3DS is showing it's age and a thinning release calendar.

Games like Yo-Kai Watch, aka with a potential mass appeal, or Dragon Quest for the core players taking ages to come westwards, doesn't help.
Nintendo has reduced it's output, too.

Whatever version of NX Nintendo plans to dish out first, i think it's necessary that they do that this year.

Wii U hasn't been dead, it's sales are low yes but it hasn't lost the momentum that it's had.

3DS sales dropping like they have are to be expected and it's not like it's a new trend.

I'll point to this as I have many times before:

3DS has always been further along this path compared with Wii U. It's perfectly natural that 3DS is in decline.

That one patent DID have a port for a disc drive...

lol you find that hilarious? what about ps4 shipping in one quarter, what wii u shipped in 2 years.

Wii U flop baby. PS4 is the best lol.^~^

Of course people would find it kinda hilarious when Splatoon on Wii U numbers can beat those two title on monstrous number PS4 there.

These arent evergreen titles.

Donkey Kong is example of evergreen title though considering how good it perform on Wii and 3DS. Also, u dont mention anything about evergreen in ypur first statement there.

Yo-kai Watch has bombed in the west, though.

Mario Maker and Splatoon are the flexed wiiU biceps of 2015. Hardware sales accurately reflect that

Looks like Wii U won't even hit 15 million by the time NX drops. Crazy.

This is expected. For the past two years I've estimated 13-15 million. Wii U has actually had better Christmas sales than I anticipated, especially this year being equal to 2013 and 2014, so now 15 million is a reasonable figure. It depends when NX lands, of course. When it does I don't think Wii U will be around for much longer. Nintendo won't support it and since there are basically no third parties releasing for it either, it'll be pretty much dead on the NX launch day (apart from the odd Lego and Skylanders release).
