at least the actual level shown after the concept art/painting in the trailer is not really similar, so I think everything will be ok if they just change the picture in that scene.
I still vote for a Crash Bandicoot picture instead.

Lol,I tried.

Looks like there are some great artists in Naughty Dog.

Wow, the amount of toxic in this thread.

It's definitely a huge mistake from ND's part. No doubt they'll fix it by the time it releases, but the damage's done.

No artist likes seeing their artwork being used without credit. Although at this point whoever made the concept for AC4 is probably thinking "what the hell, lol"

Wee, my first avatar quote! ;)

Fair enough, considering you don't know the slightest thing about me besides that avy, but flippancy is not the only way.

What happened here was extremely lazy and irresponsible and needs to be fixed, but to see some people immediately painting doomsday scenarios... so silly. You're about to play a GOTY 2016 candidate soon, let me see you cancelling that preorder because of this bizzare discovery.

Anyway, ND statement incoming in 3, 2, 1...

Well thats a fuck up.

Someone at Naughty Dog probably just googled something and copy / pasted the image.

I just googled "pirate beach art" and that image is the 2nd picture that came up and linked to a page that had nothing to do with Assassins Creed.

All they had to do was "search by image". If they actually did pick it up from a role play forum and thought it would be a good idea without double checking the source of the image then thats really dumb.

Until I hear it from ND, I honestly believe it was on purpose. Like a nod to AC Black Flag for its setting.

they still used it in promotional material presumably w/o consent, depends on the copyright holder if he, she or they pursue reimbursement..
Presumably is the correct word. Generally speaking, people just jump the gun at once and take it as a fact, happends a lot of times. Would be nice to know some info regarding the usage of this art.

Welp, cancelling preorder.

I'm not gonna waste my time with this Black Flag clone. So many devs copying the perfected formula Ubisoft has designed.

;)

They went to the trouble of removing the assassin. Someone knew what they were doing.

Outrage meter still pretty low, but don't defend this crap. (No, there are not may, but there shouldn't be even one loon)

Someone else on the internet did that exact cropping and posted it on their website unrelated to assassin's creed. Someone at ND doing story boarding likely nabbed it since it is the first thing to come up on a Google image search.

RexNovis double posting trying to get top of the second page was just sad.

On topic, they did something similar with TLOU and some subway map.

Well damn. Does the artist own the concept art he did for the game or does Ubisoft? Did Naughty Dog pay Ubisoft to use the art? I doubt the artist would know about it if they did.

If some artist at Naughty Dog just lifted it, that is fucked up. I know they did have a problem previously with Last of Us where someone lifted an artists subway map, then they changed it. Though it still originally was in the retail game.

From the trailer thread, directly from the source:
Nope. Martin (the creator of the artwork) sits right here.

That is so bad. What's funnier is the cut is meant to show that the two locations are the same and the painting is from a completely different game. Hahahaha.
Now you say it, it is jarring how that cut to the island isnt of the same image in the painting. Surely an editor/director would question that...

There's a lot of things that could be going on here.

1) Naughty Dog could've licensed the artwork from Ubisoft. Not likely, bur certainly possible. Even Ubisoft's head of content wouldn't necessarily be made aware of that if it was the case.
2) A third-party asset creation team hired by Sony/ND could've snuck this into their commissioned art package hoping no one would notice.
3) Someone at Naughty Dog could've used the artwork as a placeholder and forgotten to replace it in time for the trailer.

There is a chance Naughty Dog is entirely at fault here, but it's also very likely that there is something else going on here. I don't think it's healthy to jump to conclusions about this.

I think the chance of this being a outsourcing problem is higher as if it was made by someone internally the Lead responsible for the art team should have supervised the creation process.

Nobody comes up with a concept this quality in one day. If this was made by one of ND's staff, it isn't only the artist's faulty, there's a management problem too.

Yeah, the art could have been stolen, or it could have been purchased for use, we don't know if Ubisoft owns that piece or not.
We'll probably find out soon since I doubt Naughty Dog will go long without making a statement.
I'm thinking it was an accident.

There's so much art that goes into a game like this it isn't easy to cross-reference every texture.

They obviously trusted someone they shouldn't have. It isn't some intentional nod to another game.

Maybe Drake is a fan of Assassin’s Creed games?? I mean the man likes climbing, so it only makes sense that he’s like AC/Ubi games and their towers.

Naughty Dog just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about developing concept art (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like being a game director, where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw over a fellow concept artist, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the gaming public that plays Ubisoft games, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Uncharted 4, nor will they purchase any of Sony's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Naughty Dog has alienated an entire market with this move.

Naughty Dog, publicly apologize and cancel Uncharted 4 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Damn that's an impressive trailer, but that is a really embarrassing slip up. It certainly creates implications that other things may have been "inspired".

I wonder how the person who added that AC artwork on the trailer thought it could get away with it and nobody would notice. On this era people will notice EVERYTHING in a matter of seconds when a new trailer is published.

I don't find this meme funny since the 231th time someone made a joke from it.

Sometimes, you do know.

Embarrassing for ND, but I'm sure they'll apologize and just replace the picture. Not the first time an artist has googled for some stock image, copied it, and then got caught. It's crazy that the image is so prominently featured in the trailer though.

Wow, I just realized what he was doing lol. Now I feel like an idiot xD
