Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

I think the only good way to make an updated model would to do non graphical updates like faster wifi, 4K blu Ray, sata 3.0, better controller batteries. Things along the lines of stuff that won't completely alienate your prior customer base. I know if they do this then i won't upgrade again until PS 5.5.

Not really convinced, especially because the pricing would be steep (if they go for hardware that can atleast somewhat run modern games at 4K).

Should call it PS4R because by the end of the year VR will already be 100x more widespread than 4K TV, even if it utterly bombs.

It seemed obvious when they both went x86 and underpowered. VR, 4K is just the right nudge to make it marketable. If VR takes off, Sony and Microsoft will need more powerful consoles to push better VR games.

I could see them doing this is devs are demanding it. I can't see 4K as a driving reason behind it.

Fuck.this.

When spencer hinted at this I thought to myself how glad I was that my ps4 is my main console. But now? Fuck you Sony. And the worst part is, they might make money doing this.

Here comes everyone praising Sony for how smart they are

What the hell is wrong with you??? lol, stop panicking

If this is true, the minimum requirements for each game will still be the current Ps4 specs

You can't understand why people who buy a console expecting it to last an entire generation don't want to have to upgrade that console to get the optimum experience?

No I cant. Its 2016 and tech moves far too fast now days. If you don't want to buy an upgraded console don't do it, but there's no reason the rest who want one should have to wait

Of course, right after I buy mine...

I guess it's ok, so long as things were mandated such that devs have to support both for this generation, not like having exclusive New 3Ds games.

And I'd hope this would not mean shoddy PS4 1.0 games getting past cert that were more aimed for the 4.5 hardware...

If it's just to bring current level PS4 games to VR and 4K, that's fine and dandy.

After all the talk about Nintendo having two different platforms playing games at different quality levels, it looks like Sony will beat them there.

I was absolutely convinced that we'd see an XB1 4k before Sony did anything similar, so I'm pretty shocked by this.

Wow. Won't this fragment the userbase?

Well it depends on how they do it. If it is similar to how some laptops can plug in a GFX booster like Alienware for example, it would keep all systems capable of upgrading.

Then they need to make sure all games support the new and old spec. Pretty much what PC devs have to do now, though limited to two specs vs limitless versions of specs.

I think the idea sucks though. I bought a PS4 with the thought that it would get me through the current console gen.

Not a chance in hell this will happen.

No one in their right mind will purchase another console for just 4K because that will mean Sony believes their consumer base will purchase a 1000-2000$ 4K TV, and I do not see Sony falling for something so idiotic.

Really curious to see how Sony and MS go about this. An upgrade plan/trade in of the old system would be nice, but I don't think it will happen.

Wheres the security in investing in an incrimental upgrade when another will release soon after?

I really hope this model is not adopted by consoles - leave it to the pc space where games performance can be scaled accordingly to hardware.

I heard about this by some friends in the game industry.

Pretty bad move concerning customers if you ask me. We have seen how well the New 3DS did, but if price is the same as current PS4, as soon as good numbers will be revealed, devs will jump on the occasion to forget 'old' PS4.

I'm interested to see where this goes since now it seems like both Sony and Microsoft are going to have a upgraded console.

Yeah no. If Sony is serious with this then I'm done with them for the time being. There is absolutely no benefit for this nonsense except to piss off pretty much every early adopter (like me).

I'm not surprised at all about this development, hell, when looking at how Apple releases incremental upgrades every year and how people lap that shit up, you wonder why console manufacturers don't implement a similar strategy.

Whelp, guess I'll be spending even more money. I'm glad my income got a bump recently!

As a Day 1 early adopter I don't feel shafted at all. I've loved my PS4 so far and I'm always down for new stuff.

Nice

Now I feel good about getting rid of my PS4. Bring on the PS4.5, please don't have a shitty CPU this time. Hopefully 1080p/60fps becomes a standard for PS4.5 while PS4 keeps getting those lesser versions it already gets. Good compromise.

I cant understand why some gamers are so opposed to this. I truly can't.

Why ?
Because alot of us have already paid 400$/400€ to play and a bit over two years and we have to upgrade because they failed to properly plan their console ?
Plus I can hardly see how that would work properly, but unless we have a solid concept to see how it would work, it's hard to judge.
