Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

Oh man, gaming is so done. I mean that's an exaggeration and this will have positives as well as negatives but you'll never see me buying a console anymore until we're at the final revision of each one.

New Nintendo 3DS has already taught me to just wait for the "New" Nintendo NX. I'm sure I'm not the only one, and this is only going to do the same for PS consoles.

Yeah I think people are a bit too eager to believe this rumor.

It'd be a pretty significant upgrade. They may as well call it PS5.

I believe it is happening but I don't believe it will be able to run the same games at 4K as currently run at 1080p. That's almost like a 980Ti. 1440p maybe though.

I want a $400-$500 PS4.5 that plays games at 4K.

Give it two HDMI ports like a 4K blue ray so that I can output sound to my reciever.

I find this ironic since they're the ones who started it.

If anything, the blame is on them.

Heck, we heard Nintendo talking about doing this as well to 'speed up' hardware development. Whatever that meant.

If Sony wants PS4 games in 4K...then it's gonna be pretty expensive if it's out next fall.

Seems a little off, unless 4k output is for non-intensive games, plus apps and movies. Only top end PCs handle 4k rendering well.

We're heading towards the end of third year already, when would this even release? 4th? Might as well wait a little longer and release a PS5 at that point with full backwards compatibility.

Ugh, this will push me to stop buying consoles and just go full PC as half my gaming is already on PC as is.

Geez, some people need to calm down.

Iterative hardware is going on in every other part of the tech industry. Why should game consoles be any different?

New GPUs get released all the time, new phone and tablet models come out every year. Microsoft and Sony hint at releasing more powerful versions on their consoles and people lose their shit...

Get used to it, because its going to be the new normal.

makes sense. ppl really like the smartphone model and this generation largely sold on better looking and performing versions of the big third party multiplatform games (call of duty, battlefield, fifa, gta, watch_dogs, destiny etc).

i like the old console model tbh, but whatever. times change.

I hate the idea, but I will be there day 1 cause I always buy latest tech thing.
Still, hate it.

Don't do foward compatible over 2 iteration, that's all I'm asking.

Are people seriously thinking a PS4.5 could do 4K gaming?
I have a 980ti and most AAA-games wont run in 4K at a good framerate.

And what's the point of having 4K resolution if most people are going to watch it in 1080p, I would take 1080p and stable 60fps over a higher resolution.

It says up to 4K. If they just release one Indie game at 4K, it would make that statement true.

I think the only good way to make an updated model would to do non graphical updates like faster wifi, 4K blu Ray, sata 3.0, better controller batteries. Things along the lines of stuff that won't completely alienate your prior customer base. I know if they do this then i won't upgrade again until PS 5.5.

For every console you don't upgrade, I'll upgrade twice!

First MS and now Sony. It seems only Nintendo is left carrying on the old legacy of 'generations'.

Such a sad state of affairs. It's just not going to be the same getting hyped for PS4.5 or X1.5. No midnight launches, no getting that all new hardware set up, the new sound when they boot up, the new controller, it's all over.

truly the end of era...

So we're going from barely 30FPS at 1080p to 4K? Shit, man, if that's true the "nickname" for this thing should be PS9, not PS4.5

i hope this is not true :(

if I had money to upgrade my console I'd rather spend it on a gfx card of same cost of a new console version

Consoles aren't smartphones. While smartphones are now an essential tool consoles are ultimately frivolous toys aimed at a niche. Crap like this will destroy that niche.

Maybe it will be marketed as a 4K BluRay Player that plays PS4 games and upscales them.

I don't believe Sony has a 4K BluRay player announced yet...like Samsung has.

Either this is click bait/false rumor or it's not a real PS4.5

PSVR has a 1080p screen...4K output wouldn't take advantage of that.

that whole article with "4k being 2times as much as 1080p" has inaccuracies.

On the one hand I'm against this and think this won't work out well for devs/publishers or consumers but on the other hand I bought a GBC, GBA:SP, DS lite, New 3DSXL after owning the originals so I guess fuck me for supporting this kinda of thing in handhelds.

My only concern is that games will actually take advantage of the increased power and be unplayable (or close to) on the weaker PS4. Like the N3DS does this to some degree but not a lot of games do it, same with the DSi enhanced stuff last handheld gen. While it'd be cool to get better looking games and stuff running better I'd rather devs just focused on what is out now and wait for a new gen and not a half increase that will segment consumers before it becomes irrelevant anyway because of the PS5.

Really though, I just don't want the smartphone/iOS model of a new box every year that costs the same as last years one but the games now only work on the new one. I guess that shit is fine in the phone world with contracts and all that but for a console? Like we don't have to upgrade our DVD/Bluray players every year to watch the newest releases (I mean, I know there are firmware upgrades etc).

Seems legit. With the 4K goal and a profit margin for Sony, this is unlikely before 2017.
I'm curious how long it will take me to upgrade, depends on their offering and whether PS4.0 support goes to shit. We'll see.
Got a PC monitor and Pascal card upgrade planned for this year.

If this is true, Hubris Sony is back. Hubris for expecting console gamers will be happy to buy an iterative console a year or two after buying a PS4.

I already dropped $400 on a PS4, I'm going to be dropping $400+ on PSVR, and they have the balls to try to sell a new and improved PS4? This just makes me want to invest in a good PC.

Guys the minimum requirements for games are gonna be the current ps4 specs...

Sony isnt THAT stupid. My guess you'll just have gfx options, or it detects the more powerful ps4 it'll automatically max out the gfx options

I always figured that this was going to be the way of things once they switched to x86. More frequent hardware releases (like Apple) with backward and forward compatibility within the new "PlaySation ecosystem".

I've even thought to myself that maybe current PS4 games have hidden graphical options similar to PC graphical options, that can switch to higher settings if they detect better hardware.

For me to get on board though there needs to be an option for 1080p/60fps as an alternative to 4K.
