Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

No I cant. Its 2016 and tech moves far too fast now days. If you don't want to buy an upgraded console don't do it, but there's no reason the rest who want one should have to wait

Exactly this. Having a new PS4 or iPhone out doesn't mean the product you already have got any worse.

If consoles want to remain competitive, we can't have another ridiculous 8 year generation.

Not only that, but they've played this perfectly by making the PS4 underpowered so they could sell it cheaply - which was a huge factor in its success - and now that they need more power for 4K and VR three years later they can just revise it with a better GPU while now having a budget option for less well-off gamers. It's just good planning all around and I commend them for it.

I always figured that this was going to be the way of things once they switched to x86. More frequent hardware releases (like Apple) with backward and forward compatibility within the new "PlaySation ecosystem".

I've even thought to myself that maybe current PS4 games have hidden graphical options similar to PC graphical options, that can switch to higher settings if they detect better hardware.

For me to get on board though there needs to be an option for 1080p/60fps as an alternative to 4K.

The writing's been on the wall for ages. And if you're a Nintendo fan you've been discussing little else for the past year.

It's happening, people.

The advantage of incremental upgrades is not hamstringing developers on outdated hardware, which was a huge problem last generation and having one architecture to follow for guaranteed B/C.

Consoles are becoming PCs, basically.

This process has been going since the original Xbox.

Geez, some people need to calm down.

Iterative hardware is going on in every other part of the tech industry. Why should game consoles be any different?

New GPUs get released all the time, new phone and tablet models come out every year. Microsoft and Sony hint at releasing more powerful versions on their consoles and people lose their shit...

Get used to it, because its going to be the new normal.

Fine, so long as new games work with the past 2-3 gens of hardware like new apps work with past 2-3 gens of iphones/ipads.

We're heading towards the end of third year already, when would this even release? 4th? Might as well wait a little longer and release a PS5 at that point with full backwards compatibility.

Ugh, this will push me to stop buying consoles and just go full PC as half my gaming is already on PC as is.

maybe this will be a ps5? maybe there will never be a big completely new playstation, tbey'll just use the same OS and increase the performance?

Fuck this shit. I buy a console, I want it good and unchanged for 5+ years at least.

Cannot wait for some dev to claim "Sorry we cannot do this feature on original power PS4 consoles".

Honest question, when's the last time Kotaku has been wrong about a hardware rumor?

No idea and I barely distrust Jason Schreier, therefore it's pretty hard not to take it seriously.

Ugh...
Now that the stone is rolling, I wonder if Sony will actually explain something.

I don't know how I feel about this. Unless they or retailers offer an upgrade program where you take in your old PS4 and get a PS4K for only $100 or something a lot of people are going to be pissed, myself included.

Will developers now be required to support two modes for their games? The standard 900p/60fps or 1080p/30fps that games are now and an upgraded mode for the PS4K?

Have we reached a point with x86 architecture that consoles will now come out every 3 or 4 years instead of 7 and be fully backwards compatible with all previous games?

I expect a marginally stronger PS4 that can handle OS better and has VR stuff integrated.

4k games? Lmao

Yea, not buying this rumor.

AAA games running in 4K for a console price? I don't think so.

Yeah, I don't know what the truth behind this story is, but it isn't actually hardware rendering the current PS4 library at 4K. You're basically talking an entire generational leap in terms of horsepower, which is not something they would waste on a "4.5" incremental upgrade of the current system.

I think something got lost in translation somewhere, or it's just smoke in the channel to match what Spencer talked about a few weeks back for Xbox.

There is no way you could make a PS4.5 (incremental) -affordable- that would do 4k gaming.

Why ?
Because alot of us have already paid 400$/400€ to play and a bit over two years and we have to upgrade because they failed to properly plan their console ?
Plus I can hardly see how that would work properly, but unless we have a solid concept to see how it would work, it's hard to judge.

Agreed.

This iteration shit will bite them in the ass. May look good financially to keep selling hardware at a 399-449 price tag.

But what happens when PS5 is announced? If it's not that much better than PS4.6 or whatever, sales will tank. Or developers won't be so froathing at the mouth to get new engines and development they will be fine with what currently is out and not put in the effort for the upgrade because of cost and their bottom line.

I know going from PS3/360 companies over hauled or built brand new engines to really show off the consoles increase in power.

If they go this route it will small incremental instead of people seeing the big difference like from PS3-PS4. I remember when booting up the PS4 seeing how fast the menu was , how fast multitasking was, and how snappy things loaded.

If PS5 is a bigger upgrade with similar architecture, i wont see the benefits right off the bat and that's what sells me most of the time.
This might be a sega situation. Consoles though have innards close to PC's are not PC's.

Why do you have to upgrade your console?

I honestly can't remember, I'm not even going to treat this as a rumor, this is what's going to happen. The future, I suppose.

Oh well.

I for one welcome this trend of new hardware more frequently. It works for every other piece of electronics, why should consoles be any different? I'll take an Xbox1.5 and PS4.5 right now please!

Sounds like bullshit to me. Especially since Sony has been pushing the concept of every PS4 being the same as a major selling point to developers for PSVR at GDC

Very interesting

In fact I don't think is going to be a thing anytime soon.
In my opinion this is just a reaction to what Microsoft has been saying for the past weeks.
Sony has to have some kind of backup plan in case Microsoft actually does it and it is received well but I don't think they will be the first to do this type of incremental upgrade, at least not until they see how it works out for Microsoft.

Guys the minimum requirements for games are gonna be the current ps4 specs...

Sony isnt THAT stupid. My guess you'll just have gfx options, or it detects the more powerful ps4 it'll automatically max out the gfx options

There is something to be said for "everyone is experiencing this the same as me".

I see screenshots of PC games and get a little jealous, but I know that's because I chose PS4 and the console "scene" in general, so it's not a big deal. But now someone will have another PlayStation that I don't have because they waited a bit, but can still play the games I'm playing, but they're better.

Not saying it's rational, but it is a bit different.

Ugh, not a fan of the idea of tighter release cycles for consoles. Really not. There's nothing wrong with the standard 4-5 year cycle.

Except PCs are eclipsing consoles way faster this time and debs will want to be able to port games easily.

I'm suddenly even more excited for E3.

The question genuinely becomes why would you purchase a console every few years as opposed to purchasing a gaming PC that'll arguably last a good while longer.

What, why, this is ridiculous. Hopefully it's an expansion bay or something like that. I could just buy a PC and upgrade it if this is how it's going to be.

And after mulling over this news a bit, I'm really interested in a CPU boost for FF XIV. Performance isn't awful on PS4 at the moment, but a new CPU would be great.

As long as there are no PS4.5 exclusive games, and I can still play all the new releases on my PS4, I support the idea.
I plan to keep my console for another 3-4 years, and would really be upset if I get locked out of some of my favorite games.

This can be a positive thing it it results in continual backwards compatibility (what MS has mentioned). I have gone full digital this gen, and would be cool to carry my account with all games from generation to generation.
