Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

They are already having issues holding 30fps at 1080/900p

I wonder what they'll have to price the box at for it to be able to run at 4k/30 cuz it's not 400 bucks I can tell you that.

This situation feels painfully similar to the numerous "Sony Too" rumors when Xbox One's initial plan was revealed.

This is a rumor.

It is not confirmed.

It is not even confirmed by more than one source.

Yet we have all of the exact same reactions in here as back then.

"Yes! See? Amazing! Lol what will Sony fans say now!?!?"

So for the people who feel this is bullshit, what would you do if it turns out not to be bullshit?
I would continue playing my PS4 until it gives up and probably move to Nintendo/PC.

We don't know how much cheaper, though. If they're aiming for 4K, it won't be cheaper at all. If they can keep it at current price? Sure, whatever. But we don't even have the next generation of video cards in the PC space available at consumer-prices yet.

As for the all in one package... I mean, a PC is too. Plus I'd argue that they're arguably easier to set up for a consumer compared to current-gen consoles. You can buy a whole gaming PC for $1000 and not have to set anything up. Just plug it all in.

I dunno, it all comes down to price for me.

You're looking at this from your perspective. It's blinding you a bit here.

Most people want to buy something in one box and plug it to their TV rather easily without much fuss.

PCs also have a perception problem. Most people don't connect PCs to their home theaters. That's a very niche crowd.

Then you also have to buy additional controllers. Most gaming consoles come with one controller at least.

Moreover, 1000 bucks is not cheap. That's exorbitant for a gaming device. It seems the market has settled as 400 bucks as being the highest option. Not to mention that most default cases don't fit well into a home theatre.

Yes, I know you can built one that more relevant to that, but then you're missing a whole bunch of people. That's a smaller market than dedicated consoles.

Oh noez, looks like is leaving the console market too, lol.

Expected. There were rumors about this on the xbone side since a really long time ago, and I doubt sony would just stay still waiting for ms to rain on their parade.

This can however be an huge blow to Ms plans.

I mean, let's be honest. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are severely underpowered in today's market. It needs help to stay consistent and feel cutting edge in any form or fashion. The unfortunate side effect is...why wouldn't someone just go PC at that point?

You should already know the answer to this question.

Yeah that's not the issue most people have...

I buy into consoles because I don't want to keep upgrading.

Now i feel I have no choice to enjoy the games
In the way they're intended to be.

Oh. I guess I can't relate to that. I've always bought the new models of consoles. DS to DS Lite, PS3 to PS3 Slim, 360 to 360 Elite, 3DS to New 3DS... So this feels like a very common and natural part of what owning a console has always been to me.

I think this is a bad idea, just like I said when Microsoft announced plans in this sense.
A console should stay a console, should not become an upgradable PC. Developers must optimize code for the same hardware, not developing in a perpetual cross gen state with no optimizations.
But this is just a rumor and I don't think it's accurate.
Maybe they're working on a PS4K which is designed to play the same PS4 games at 4K and maybe it also features a BR4K drive.

Because console gaming is "easier".

Or, it was, if this comes to fruition :)

PS4K is a beast.

Maybe this is the greatness we have been waiting for.

I don't know how to feel about this I want to get a PS4 next month for Uncharted 4 but now I don't see the point because next year the 4k version will most likely be released and why waste money on a console that will be outdated in 9 to 12 months.

So, we are back to 4 year console cycles, but with the exception that now old consoles are also viable a little longer since the new games get released on older consoles but with less framerate or resolution.

If, and only IF, they maintain BC and FC, it could be good. A universal purchase. You purchased Dark Souls VII on an SYSTEM Ecosystem, whether you have an SYSTEM One, Two or Three the game (disc or digital) will play, just with different Effects, Resolution and Framerate.

Edit: This means, in my opinion we won't see these consoles until the end of 2017. Announced this E3, demoed on next, and on Sale on November 2017.

Microsoft announced they might do this down the road, and Sony sounds like they are going to do this sooner than later.

I am not sure how I feel about it cause my launch PS4 still feels like a new device to me. If they offer some type of upgrade, I am down.

Mother of God !!

Sony is going to make upgradeable console. I wish to be able to play latest games on my PS4 neither PS4.5 :(

Jesus first Xbox doing an incremental update and now Sony too? I regret jumping into this gen early with PS4 and Xb1 if true.

Should have stuck to PC and Nintendo.

Not sure having no game to play and your machine will die in 1 year is a better option.

Honestly...I think MS and Sony both seem to have an idea of where they are going...I mean they might not need a new console for this....Look at this:

Razer%20Blade%20Stealth-12-1200-80.jpg

Its an external GPU that connects to a laptop providing extra power. When Phil Spencer first mentioned this...this is what I thought of rather than a completely new box.

The industry is about to get very interesting and change if either Sony or MS followup.

Also what one of the Nintendo patents hinted at too.

I want to believe but April 1st is just over a week from now.

but if so I guess I'll have to gift wrap my nephew my PS4 when the new one come out.

Agreed.

Then again, this could release 2017 or 2018 and still be in that cycle.

This more than likely will be the PS5, being that it is a shared ecosystem now with the OS and x86, it allows for smoother hardware cycles with no more 'square one' machines, and they are calling it the '4.5' right now.

That's exactly my thoughts. If people are hearing whispers of a new system that's still maybe be two years away, then it's not an incremental PS4 upgrade. It's the PS5.

Yup, I 100% believe it

Been figuring an Xbox One + will happen in the next 2 years, makes sense Sony is thinking the same thing

this is not a console generation, this is a x86 generation, upgrades will come.

If this starts an onset of console games with variable graphics options/presets then I don't see this as a bad thing, as long as games don't become exclusive to the newer iteration.

I have a hard time believing 4K gaming on home consoles is happening this soon while it's not that widely available on PC. By that I mean you kinda need a beast to pull it off, especially with big AAA games.

Guys the minimum requirements for games are gonna be the current ps4 specs...

Sony isnt THAT stupid. My guess you'll just have gfx options, or it detects the more powerful ps4 it'll automatically max out the gfx options

I didn't buy my PS4 with the assumption that it would be obsolete and less powerful than a new machine within 1-2 years. I shouldn't have to worry about minimum specs, developers should still be pushing the limits of what the PS4 can do.

This will make console generation leap so predictable and boring. Where's the excitement? Where's the graphical jump?
It's already a relatively weak jump from PS3 to PS4. It's going to be weaker if they release new console every 3-4 years.

A combination of this and no more physical games would just force me onto PC, and I love consoles and dedicated handhelds, but there go two huge reasons with the Apple model. Rest assured annual hardware upgrades would be heavily marked up like Apple instead of break even or loss-leading with good hardware for the price point.

Please be PS5 in 2018-2021 instead.
